I want an undercut

I'm 44 but I don't care. Would I be best off going to a hairdressers or a barbers?

Do it, I have a number 2 cut under a choppy bob, love it, I’m 42. I go to a hairdresser, but not all the hairdressers in the salon are comfortable using clippers, so do talk to them first. Booked with a new person a couple months ago as my usual hairdresser wasn’t available and she wasn’t happy, did an okay job but reluctantly. Parted company with one hairdresser who said it would make me look like a lesbian!

Just lucky I guess. And soap. Proper old school soap. That's all I got.

I got my kids to do mine during lockdown 1. I have long hair and there was just too much of it. My cunning plan at the time was to keep my hair down to disguise it when I went back to work, but since I now wear the long stuff in a ponytail, it's totally on view. I bribe my daughter/son/whoever to shave the undercut bits every 6 weeks or so. I'm 53

@Wagsandclaws that was my thought! All the lesbians I know look great and they ahve a wide variety of hairstyles. I went terribly british though and didn't challenge her just never ever went back. Surprising how many hairdressers are squeemish about cutting hair very short.

I have an undercut, I think it was when I was about 43 or 44, I'm now 46. My hair was a shortish bob, now it's below shoulder, but I've kept the undercut. It's brilliant !

I got the hairdresser to do it the first time, but now my DH keeps it tidy between hairdresser visits with clippers. My hair grows fast so its' every 10 days/2 weeks it needs clipping.

It's only gone wrong once when he caught a bit of hair in the clippers which took a while to grow out again !

It's so much quicker to dry, less sweaty in exercise, if you don't want to see it leave your hair down, and if you do - tie it up !

Mine's only at the back though, not the sides. I'd love one side done, but the growing out phase put me off. A photo would be a bit pointless as you only see it from the back and if it's tied up, but I love it!

Great. I have booked an appointment with a male stylist in a hairdressers. I feel he may be less squeamish about cutting hair very short. Now I need to trawl the Web for inspiration.

Had mine done a few months ago and love it ! its a full undercut with sides and back and still curly and now bright red on top. Am 45 and plus size

Another undercut here
The first hairdresser I asked wouldn’t do it so I stopped going there. The next hairdresser I asked had one herself so no problem there! And my current hairdresser is good too!
I clipper it myself between hairdresser cuts. I set up my bathroom so I have two mirrors in the perfect position to be able to see what I’m doing.

It's usually because they don't really know how to do it/haven't done it since training, so they just don't offer that service. Also, because they probably do 'r many undercuts they may not want you invest in clippers/blades/guards etc.

I know cos I asked my hairdresser who was happy to cut the undercut but didn't want to shave patterns in.

I get her to cut it (usually a grade 2) and then go to the barbers and get them to put the pattern in. I had a snowflake for Christmas and a mandala type pattern this time.

I got an undercut last year (aged 46) - have a long-ish pixie. Bought clippers and DH trims it between visits so I save money too as I can go longer between appointments.

@mrsfeatherbottom I haven't got pics of my mist recent patterns.
The 2nd pic is my hairdressers first attempt at patterns after she bought clippers etc to accommodate me.

I’m in my 40s and have an undercut at the back. Hair down you can’t see it. I really like it but also found some hairdressers really reluctant to do. Which I find bizarre because they have clipppers and must use them on bottom of short haircuts anyway

I’ve found a place that will do basic patterns for me but may try barbers in future to get more creative.

No not all lesbians have an undercut! the model in Hozier’s Someone New has one! I’ve known a few lesbians who don’t have them either.

I'm just shy of 40 and have a #1.5 on both sides. I love it. I go to a trendyish hairdresser. I don't have anything shaved into it though. Hairdresser has never been reluctant.

I have curly hair and don’t quite have an undercut but have it longer on top and very cropped at the sides and back.
