What face/ body type looks best with short hair?

jolliejullie · 25/12/2021 18:08

I have been thinking about chopping my hair off recently. I used to have short (pixie) and medium-short (bob) haircuts in my 20s but I am now in my mid-30s so I am not sure if short hair would still suit me as it did back then.

What are, in your opinion, the facial and body characteristics that make a woman look better with short hair vs long hair?

I think good bone structure is key to short hair. Build and height doesn’t matter so much providing you have cheekbones and possibly a good jaw.
Age is not a thing, I have friends in their 60s who can rock a pixie cut .

100problems · 25/12/2021 22:17

I have definitely not got cheekbones.

If you want short hair there's really only two things you need to consider:

How good is your stylist. Pay peanuts look like a pg tips chimp

How good is your mascara. Buy the best you can afford

Slobberstops · 25/12/2021 22:32

I hate all this being scared of your face. I have a big mop of hair but wear it up a lot. Only a few years ago I had it very short. I have never had a cheekbone, my jaw line is blobby and I am a bit fat. Neither hair style hid these things but both look great in different ways. I still look great from the right angle and like my fat grandmother from the wrong one. Actually I look more groomed and edgier with short. Have spent a fortune on posh pixie cuts but my best came from the Turkish barbers for £15. Am a bit old as well and their work looked less something that could be mistaken for the aforementioned fat grandma’s hair.

I don't know OP it probably helps if you like your face, whatever the shape! Hoping someone will come and say square face works, as I'm really struggling with post partum hair loss and just want to chop it all off. I also used to look great with short hair at 20, worried it'll make me look 40at 30!

AnotherMansCause · 26/12/2021 00:29

I don't have great cheekbones to speak of, although they're not absent either. I'm fairly short, only just in the healthy BMI range, & look great with short hair, apparently. I also rather suit almost any hat. IME most women who suit hats, suit very short hair.

I spent the last couple of years with a clipper cut. I loved it.

AnotherMansCause · 26/12/2021 00:30

Oh, meant to mention, I'm 40.

Smurftastic · 26/12/2021 00:32

@AnotherMansCause what does it have to do with hats? I look great in hats. Might be just shit hair Grin

Dreamstate · 26/12/2021 00:46

So I have had long and short hair. My cropped hair looks better when I have a stronger jaw line e.g. when I'm healthy weight. I've put on weight and I would grt my chin length Bob yet as my jawline from side profile esp isn't so great ( i.e. defined)

Thats just me though.

Mercurial123 · 26/12/2021 04:51

I wouldn't have short hair again as my hair is dry, curly and frizzes. As much as I like short hair on others it's a no for me.

YenniferOfVengaBus · 26/12/2021 05:06

Gamine body type with a heart shaped face and big eyes

MajorNeville · 26/12/2021 06:43

I've recently had my hair cut short, my dd (16) told me I shouldn't as I have the wrong shaped face but now I've done it she says she really loves it and that I suit it. I also love it.

It's hair, it'll grow again if that's what you want.

OhRosalind · 26/12/2021 07:32

I think short hair looks best if you have great cheekbones, defined jaw and big eyes but lots of people can carry it off if they have the right style.

My face suits short hair but not my body - I’m an inverted triangle with wide shoulders and a small head and short hair made me look pinheaded and unbalanced. But otherwise I don’t think body type matters.

TheRealProfessorYaffle · 26/12/2021 08:52

I think short hair looks best when the face and body under it are happy and living their best life. Mine is short and I love that it takes so little time to do anything with and it's never in my face when it's wet or windy. Truly, if you are happy with your choice, you will carry off whatever the heck you fancy. Don't overthink it. Do what you fancy, then think to yourself, 'I am a mother fricking God and I glow with the light of a thousand fiery orbs', step outside and enjoy!!

Vbree · 26/12/2021 11:48

Good cheekbones is key. When I had really short hair I was slimmer which helped I think. Now I'm a bit chunkier I wouldn't go for a short style. I think my face would pull it it off but I'd be worried about my body looking huge in proportion.

jolliejullie · 26/12/2021 11:55

I do have strong cheekbones and chin, although my eyes are quite deep-set and not especially big.

Trying to attach a pic (eyes covered for privacy) to show my face shape to get some opinions!

I think you need a decent profile - pin your hair back to see what it looks like.

Also remember pixie styles need v regular cuts and more styling than long straight hair

roarfeckingroarr · 26/12/2021 12:25

Thin with good cheekbones. Like all looks.

Smurftastic · 26/12/2021 12:34

@jolliejullie I'd like to believe there's a right short haircut for everyone. Not convinced about my own face Grin but I can see you in something like this. You have lovely face shape, I'd suggest going for a swooping fringe and flat top like this one.

Women with tiny noses suit short hair. Emma Watson. Kirsten Stewart.
Also, a squarer face than a long oval. I know an oval face can carry off any style they say but I think a cute square face looks good with short hair.

You have a long (ish) oval face, I think you'd suit the new ''bixie'' cut. good strong fringe short bob.

The photo of the girl in the blazer would suit your face shape

The second photo more of a close up is a less daring version

So there's hope for me, I've square face and small features. I have to wear huge glasses though! No celebrities have that problem so hard to find inspo.

I concur looking at 'bixies' OP, only just read about them a couple of days ago. They remind me of 90s haircuts.

CommanderBurnham · 26/12/2021 12:47

Long neck and not too broad a shoulder helps.

I have broad shoulders but a small head and short neck so need bigger hair to balance it all out.

wonderstuff · 26/12/2021 12:51

I'm 42 with short hair, I don't have good bones but it looks nice, I feel more me with short hair and can't be arsed with the faff of having it long. I prefer the lack of weight on my head, I love being able to wash it quickly, not having to tie it up, that it dries quickly.

Most men have short hair and don't give a second thought to how their face shape works with it! I would just do it, don't over think it, you can always grow it if you don't like it, but you might find you love it.

GoGoGretaDoll · 26/12/2021 12:53

There's a short cut for everyone. I've never had my hair long and can promise you I don't spend much time angsting over my jawline.

The only caveat is that you do need regular trims so you need to factor that in - my friend with super-long curls only gets hers cut once a year and is Shock at my hair cutting bill.
