Really classic designer bag?

OneGlamMama · 24/12/2021 19:46

After a crappy year, I want to buy myself a really classic small crossbody bag. That'll be like my grab and go everyday bag to replace my current one I have.

I want something really classy, designer, something that makes you feel powerful but doesn't break the back too hard!

I have never owed a designer before. So break me in gently.
I really like Mulberry just not sure. Thoughts?

The world and its mother has Mulberry as you can see from this thread. Look at more artisan, lesser know leather makers like Furla, Tuscan Leather or Cuoieriafiorentina.

They’re cheaper and really good quality www.cuoieriafiorentina.it/en/leather-bags/womens-bags/crossbody-bags.html

If you want high end go for Gucci. I have this in black and the taupe. Sorry it’s from the French site. www.gucci.com/fr/fr/pr/women/handbags/shoulder-bags-for-women/gg-marmont-small-matelasse-shoulder-bag-p-447632DTD1T1000

Mulberry is fine if you don’t mind having the same bag as half the town with no imagination. Nice quality though. I’m a Coach fan personally.

Not a great photo but this is my deMellier bag

I really like Tamara Mellon in terms of making stuff that makes you feel powerful and quality.
The Kiss Mini www.tamaramellon.com/collections/bags

I would go for Saint Laurent, something like sac de jour. enjoy your purchase and I hope times perk up for you in 2022.

Suzi69 · 27/12/2021 09:02

I’m interested in buying a small Antony; I think black would be the most useful; but it’s out of stock everywhere.
How do you get to find out when an out of stock Mulberry is stocked again? Do re- stocked popular items immediately sell out again?

mrsnw · 27/12/2021 10:10

I would imagine there is no stock due to Christmas. John Lewis will give you a back in stock alert if you look on their website x

Saurus72 · 27/12/2021 13:26

I have a few Mulberry bags and SLGs and have found the quality to be excellent. I love my Mimi Berry cross body which is unbranded and perfect for everyday. My absolute favourite is my Chloe Marcie Mini - I’ve had mine for over 6 years and I love it because it’s robust and completely appropriate for anywhere - I’ve worn mine for (endless) walks on the beach during lockdown as well as to go to Michelin star restaurants. I have mine in grey and plan on buying one in tan later this year once I’ve saved up for it!

Re: the PP who was so snippy about Mulberry and who likes Coach - each to their own but having lived in the US all I can see in a Coach bag is Midwest American shopping malls, frumporama.

How lovely! I’m really coveting a Darley. Enjoy!

Thank you @bendmeoverbackwards. I will have a closer look at them.
I like the understated look.

I notice thd Alexa has resurfaced. I need to turf out my navy blue suede special edition one! Mulberry is not bought by anyone under 40 these days I think! My DDs would never want one.,

Puffalicious · 28/12/2021 00:14

Hi,
Can I jump on and ask for recommendations for a black, cross-body, soft unstructured bag? Not too small but doesn't need to hold loads. I'm not girly at all and wish to use it with jeans/ trainers as well as with a more tailored look for work at times. It can't have a chain strap and I'd prefer a wider strap, not thin or flimsy. Any ideas? Thanks.

Peaseblossum22 · 28/12/2021 09:58

Another person here on the lookout for a new bag. Loved my Coach Lori in blue for ages but recently with being at work less have been using a Fossil satchel which is nice but just not as polished and actually just a bit too big .

Really?! My 22 yo fairly stylish dtr only ever buys Mulberry. One of her uni friends wanted an Amberly for her 21st and another school friend has a selection of designer bags that include Mulberry.
VitalsStable · 28/12/2021 11:15

A small YSL Nikki bag.

TizerorFizz · 28/12/2021 12:07

My 26 and 29 year olds think they are Mumsy and would not touch them. Some DDs like what their mums like but most of their friends find their own labels. DD1 is more into Gucci and Bottega V and older one is into Loewe and Chanel. High earners though! I’m afraid Mulberry isn’t what they or their friends want.

TizerorFizz · 28/12/2021 12:16

I also think it’s easy to follow a brand that you see around you and not be aware that other brands are coveted too. YSL logos are everywhere so DD1 in particular would avoid that. It’s always Mulberry that MN want but in most fashion mags and in real life, the bags carried represent a much wider variety of brands. Which is much more exciting!

I’ve got Ralph Lauren, Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Gucci, Todd, Loewe, and a Mulberry. I quite like the Mulberry Amberley but I think makes like Celine are undervalued by Brits.

MsSquiz · 28/12/2021 13:28

I have quite a few Mulberry bags, as well as Gucci and YSL - but I go for a bag that I like, regardless of the brand. I think that's far more important than choosing a name or just because they're shown in fashion magazines.
One of my favourite clutches is a black Michael Kors and another is a nude patent clutch for Tesco, but it matches my nude Louboutins perfectly!

@bendmeoverbackwards I love the oxblood colour! My SIL has an oxblood Amberley and I love it but we try not to buy exactly the same bags!

I'm always torn between classic colours or choosing more bolder colours - I always stick to classic as I worry the more bolder colours will go out of style quicker

expatmigrant · 28/12/2021 14:34

@TizerorFizz
Agree with you on over exposure of YSL and Gucci. I have a very understated YSL which is not very popular because the logo is barely noticeable and am happy to say that people don't really give it a second look. Use my Mulberry Bayswater for work only because it can hold all my crap including my laptop.
Celine...on the other hand...understated and classy.
Love their new Triomphe range.
and also love the Loewe Puzzle bag.

follygirl · 28/12/2021 14:56

I've just bought the Mini Alexa in black. It's gorgeous Smile

TizerorFizz · 28/12/2021 15:36

@expatmigrant
I think people do look very one dimensionally at bags. If they see plenty about, then that’s the best one to get. I have a Gucci with a bamboo handle. Either you know it’s a Gucci or you don’t. But it’s a classic. It has no logo to say what it is. But it has the handle.

I think magazines are quite useful when looking at newer or less obvious brands. They are certainly not promoting the same old brands that are promoted on MN! Why does everyone immediately think Mulberry when the word classic is used but not Givenchy or Tods, or Celine or Loewe? I just don’t understand why other brands are not classics? The Gucci Bamboo or Jacqui are classics the world over. Mulberry are in the uk but not really elsewhere.

oneglassandpuzzled · 28/12/2021 15:44

Osprey do good bags. www.ospreylondon.com/women/bags/cross-body-bags

I used to like Demellier but now find them a bit too flashy.

I still have three mulberry bags in classic styles and colours. Most practical is an old tessie satchel in oak. My Bayswater backpack is good for commuting or travel. When you can. I don’t use my Lily in taupe with silver hardware very much but can’t bring myself to sell it on, as my daughter loves it and borrows it sometimes.
She’s 23 and love an old black Del Rey I bought her secondhand a few years ago.

OneGlamMama · 28/12/2021 16:33

This is the one I nabbed in the sale 🥰
