Electrolysis stories

Dolly3656 · 15/12/2021 07:52

Hey everyone! I've recently gained a lot of dark coarse hairs on my upper lip and chin. I hear electrolysis can work for this but I'm worried about skin damage and if it is actually a permanent solution. Would love to hear from anyone who has had it done previously who could share their experience (how long ago they had it, what method and how their skin is since). Thanks so much! :)

And the top lip was unbearably sore so I get it waxed.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/12/2021 00:03

If the hair has any pigment and your skin is fair then laser would work. It will be less painful and quicker than electrolysis. Also electrolysis can leave tiny scars - you won’t notice on your chin but you might on your upper lip.

So I’d say laser to do the bulk of the job, electrolysis only to hoover up any stragglers

Dolly3656 · 30/12/2021 16:52

@Luredbyapomegranate Ah ok, I always thought with laser the hair had to be dark to pick up? Mine are darkish but not black on my upper lip almost like a grey/brown of that makes sense?
With the scars you mention particularly on the upper lip is this something you've had to deal with? I'm a bit worried about this happening so trying to find out as much as I can about it! Thanks again :)

@notangelinajolie Ah that's amazing! Did you have it all during those few days then? That's fantastic for it to be done so quickly! Do you mind asking did you hold a bar at all when you had it done? And did you have any scarring or little marks left from it on your upper lip? I'm hearing different things on whether it could scar but have the same thing where it's dark and bleach just isn't cutting it now! was it a different person that you used for your chin? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks so much for sharing your experience :)

@Rhannion ah you know I've never had it waxed! Always wondered about that but wasn't sure how long it would last, do you get many weeks from waxing? I seem to have bleach way more frequently than I used to and just getting a bit frustrated having to check for more every day. Thanks for sharing this, definitely good to explore all the options! :)

Any pigment is fine for laser.

I did end up with a couple of tiny scars from electrolysis. I would absolutely laser as first option.

Oblomov21 · 30/12/2021 20:17

I've had electrolysis sporadically for the last 25 years. Works very well. I am hair free for a bit, but then a few grow again. I think it's the best hair removal, or rather most others aren't better.

Dolly3656 · 30/12/2021 20:17

@Luredbyapomegranate Ah I'm sorry to hear that do you mind me asking what type of electrolysis you had? Did you have to hold a metal bar whilst they did it?
Thanks so much for the info on laser I will definitely look into it. I've got basically black underarm hair too and was thinking electrolysis for that but imagine it could take ages!!

OP posts:
Luredbyapomegranate · 30/12/2021 21:44

I had a couple different types, yes I think holding a bar was involved at some point.

I would deffo laser your underarms, it will be a million times quicker, and less painful.

emmylousings · 31/12/2021 21:56

It works permanently over time. If you have a couple of sessions a month, you'll see a difference within 6 months. I bleach and pluck a bit too, for day to day management, but electrolysis is the game changer.

paisley256 · 31/12/2021 22:18

I had it for spikey black chin hairs I acquired after having my 1st child 17 years ago. It took a few months but the hairs vanished never to return.
It did hurt and I was very red after but calmed down after an hour or so.
Im very fair skin and hair.

Ohyesiam · 31/12/2021 22:41

Had it for years ( and years and years) . No real results, I think they grow back with each hormone cycle.

Dolly3656 · 02/01/2022 18:59

@Oblomov21 how long would you say you have between it coming back? I'm definitely keen to get rid of it for good but read more hair can keep coming. Do you mind me asking what areas you had done and if you had any scars or marks from it? Thanks again for sharing! :)

Dolly3656 · 02/01/2022 19:01

@Ohyesiam Ah I'm sorry to hear that, what kind of electrolysis did you have? Did you hold a bar at all? If you don't mind me asking what areas did you have done and did it cause any scarring? Sorry so many questions!! Thank you again for sharing! :)

I don’t remember Holding any bars. It was in the 90 s so it could well have improved.
Was lip and chin .
Hope you get sorted x

Sunshineboo · 02/01/2022 19:06

i had 10 courses about 8 years ago. i still
have hair (slightly less i guess) but i now have dark patches from sun damage which looks like a permanent moustache. i have to put skin lightening creme on it and wear full
face sun block.

i really regret it. just wax.

Oblomov22 · 02/01/2022 19:09

Chin mainly. Tiny bit on top lip. No scarring at all.

Dolly3656 · 02/01/2022 19:14

@paisley256 Ah that's amazing! Was it just your chin where you got them? I'm 34 not had any children but I came off the pill and I would say they seemed to appear shortly after that got maybe 6-7 really black ones like you say that I really want gone! If you don't mind me asking did you get any scars or marking of the skin? And did you hold a bar when you had it done? Just trying to understand a bit more about how the different types affected people. Thank you again for sharing, really amazing to hear they never came back! :)

OP posts:
Dolly3656 · 02/01/2022 19:19

@Sunshineboo Oh I'm really sorry to hear that, and really appreciate you sharing your experience. If you don't mind me asking how was your skin after the sessions? Were the dark patches something that came up straight after treatment or has it come on later? Did you have to hold a bar at all when they did it? Thank you again for sharing and the advice I really appreciate it

Sorry @Dolly3656 I've only just come back to this thread.
I think I had 4 appointments over a 2 week period. No scaring at all - just redness for a few hours. Looking very closely afterwards there were a few red dots where the hairs had been but they faded after a few days I don't know what you mean about a bar? If it's to manage pain - then no, nothing.

The second time I had electrolysis was 30 years later - done by my daughter. I was her victim client for the day when she was training to be a beauty therapist at college. It was done under supervision and tbh the hairs she was removing were the stubborn thick middle aged chin variety. I don't have the time or patience to keep going back for more treatment and have decided to age gracefully and manage the buggers with tweezers.

Rummikub · 02/01/2022 19:26

I had it done on top lip, arms and even my big toe! About 20 years ago. Had the treatment over a year prior to my wedding day. She was great and was a specialist in Liverpool. I keep meaning to go drop by and say thanks.

No scarring and it was permanent. And I’d see incremental improvement each time. I remember her giving me numbing cream to use prior as my eyes watered a lot first session.
Highly recommend.

Sunshineboo · 02/01/2022 19:52

hi i don't remember holding a bar. skin was fine - i got sun block which i applied religiously, however i started to notice it after a couple of lunches on a bench in the sun. i sweated away the sun protection and now have to wear a hat, sit in the shade and reapply. i also use the boots skin lightening/dark patch creme and it gets worse as
the weather improves.

it looks way worse than hair ever did and i still have hair. i am pale with dark hair if that makes a difference.

would not go near it now

Dolly3656 · 03/01/2022 17:58

@Oblomov21 that's so good to hear about your skin, this is my biggest concern! Thanks again for sharing :)

OP posts:
Dolly3656 · 03/01/2022 18:01

@Sunshineboo Ah I'm really sorry it turned out that way, I had no idea this could happen and I am the same pale and dark haired. Did the electrolysist take any responsibility for it? Was this very quickly after the treatments or did it come on over time? I hope it improves for you as time goes on and thank you again for sharing this
