Tights? Bare legs?

I’m at a wedding next weekend. It’s a family wedding the bride is 30s and I’m in my 50s. I have this dress to wear closetlondon.com/closet-puff-sleeve-a-line-dress-d6258_purple/

Shoes - I have platform heels, closed in toe.

My dilemma is - do I wear tights? Bare legs? If tights what colour?

It’s ages since I’ve really dressed up due to Covid etc and I want to look my best.

My legs aren’t the best, white and 50!

Do I wear nude tights? If so any recommendations from natural good quality tights I won’t look like a granny in.

Also any recommendation for what to wear over it in case it’s cooler?

Thank you!

Tights! Is the dark colour black or navy? I would assume that it’s black and wear a thinnish pair of black tights. Not super see-through but not thick woolly ones either. Definitely take a spare pair of tights in your bag - nothing worse than a ladder or hole.

Long puffed sleeves are a nightmare to wear with any kind of cardigan/jacket so I think just wear a smart coat if outside and then hope for the best once it’s off! Maybe wear a thermal vest underneath if you’re worried it’s going to be too cold? I love a thermal vest! Grin

It’s a lovely dress. Have a great time!

What colour are your shoes? I think nude tights would be better with this dress as the overall colour is quite pale.

Waterfallgirl · 12/12/2021 12:59

Thank you @OhGingleBells and @Blueberrycreampie

The darker colour in dress is navy, so I have some navy shoes similar to these but patent www.clarks.co.uk/c/Kaylin-Cara-2/p/26152876

I also have the above shoes in a patent nude colour and berry suede.

It’s just the tights really - yes to two pairs !

But if I’m going for nude is there a danger of being too mumsy - any recommendations ?

I am in my fifties and Celtic pale. My legs are never shown to the world in their pasty glory. Several applications of gradual tanner can be helpful so I can achieve a faint glow. No point going so far as to have very brown legs when the rest of you is so pale. I have bought some body makeup to experiment with this year - I must be the only person who didn't like the MAC one as it didn't seem to have enough coverage. I think given it's the UK winter I'd go with nude tights - the key is to get really pale tights, an oyster shade, so your legs look like your legs but better. Think of the Duchess of Cambridge - she doesn't look like a granny when she wears tights.

alienbaby · 12/12/2021 13:33

I'd wear with ankle boots and sheer black tights

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2021 17:47

Tights
Sheer black, 20-30 denier.

Cover-Up
I would assume the wedding will be indoors mostly since it's December, so I would just wear a normal winter coat over the top and then remove once indoors at the venue - though if you have a colourful one I would chose that above a black or muted colour.

If you are particularly concerned about the cold maybe layer a thermal base top under your dress? As it has a high neck, back, and long sleeves you would be able to do this.

Finally, maybe a nice hat, a colourful beret would work really nicely to compliment your outfit, look wedding appropriate, and keep you warm. This would depend on how long you expect to be outdoors.

Very sheer, nude matt tights. NOT black, they would look very dated. Fabulous, beautiful dress btw.

DuckonaBike · 12/12/2021 19:07

I don’t like nude tights either - if you don’t want to wear dark ones had you considered nude fishnets? I feel they are less “mumsy” than sheer nude tights.

Lamby225 · 12/12/2021 19:11

I’m 55 . Invest in some fake tan or leg make up .

alienbaby · 12/12/2021 19:16

@weekend2021
Black tights are never dated

sansucre · 12/12/2021 19:30

Bare legs or a low denier nude. If the shoes are dark, a very low denier black will look great too.

Do not wear coloured tights or black opaques.

Bellsandwhistle · 12/12/2021 20:15

Nude tights for sure. Def not black that’s way more mumsy/dated with that dress. M and a do good 5 or 7 denier ones that look like a better version of a bare leg. You’ll need 3 pairs to have 2 spares.

I agree with this.
CrimbleCrumble1 · 12/12/2021 21:11

Nude tights.

revea · 12/12/2021 21:12

I agree with @weekend2021
But also not that much of your leg will be on show so I'd be tempted to look at fake tan

dropitlikeitsloth · 13/12/2021 00:27

Sally Hansen legs OP, I’m pale and just use the glow. It’s like a foundation for legs it’s so good!

weekend2021 · 13/12/2021 06:37

@alienbaby

….but they can look dated, depending on how they are styled. The dress OP has chosen is predominantly pale in colour, as a previous poster mentioned, and black tights, no matter how sheer, would age the look completely. (I have visions of Susan Boyle’s first appearance on BGT) Grin

pilates · 13/12/2021 06:48

Nude tights, definitely not black

PickElaine · 13/12/2021 06:58

I also agree with Weekend. The dress is too pale for black tights. It's a lovely dress.

JenniferWooley · 13/12/2021 07:22

I always wear these if going with nude tights

Fit well & look natural

NashvilleQueen · 13/12/2021 07:24

It's a gorgeous dress. It's quite long so I think bare legs (personally) or if you're too cold/pale then nude tights. If you wear black/navy you're dragging the eye down to your ankles and away from the lovely dress.

Also it's hard to tell just from the photo but could the shoes be a bit sensible for a wedding? I wondered about a heeled ankle boot or something?

NashvilleQueen · 13/12/2021 07:26

Sorry OP! Just saw your shoes are patent. That's a bit dressier and will look lovely.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 13/12/2021 07:31

Wolfords are great for sheer nude tights/stockings

I only wear them for weddings and parties

It does get you being asked: aren’t you cold with bare legs?!

As they don’t look like tights Grin

Palavah · 13/12/2021 07:32

You don't need tights with that length of dress! Plus tights always seem to make high heels less comfortable because they scrunch your toes up.

I'd wear bare legs and a slip underneath the dress, moisturise legs well.

Unless it's a particularly cold day /draughty church I'd have thought your coat will be enough and then reception indoors will be heated so you'll be fine.

RedHot22 · 13/12/2021 07:33

Lovely dress

Definitely nude tights as they will also be more comfortable with patent court shoes
