Tights? Bare legs?

Waterfallgirl · 12/12/2021 09:20

I’m at a wedding next weekend. It’s a family wedding the bride is 30s and I’m in my 50s. I have this dress to wear closetlondon.com/closet-puff-sleeve-a-line-dress-d6258_purple/

Shoes - I have platform heels, closed in toe.

My dilemma is - do I wear tights? Bare legs? If tights what colour?

It’s ages since I’ve really dressed up due to Covid etc and I want to look my best.

My legs aren’t the best, white and 50!

Do I wear nude tights? If so any recommendations from natural good quality tights I won’t look like a granny in.

Also any recommendation for what to wear over it in case it’s cooler?

Thank you!

….. sleeves are tricky with a jacket or coat.
I would go for a massive shawl, fur scarf and winter hat

Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken · 13/12/2021 17:54

Nude or even a pale grey tights, not bare legs for a wedding.

DonaPatrizia · 13/12/2021 17:57

I'd wear that with bare legs and some elegant high heel black ankle boots - Zara has some great ones. You aren't showing much leg with a dress that long.

Or you could try knee high boots with it. I have some great cream leather ones - I know, but it's a wedding - which avoid that 'heavy' black leather kneeboot thing and might work well with that dress. Then you could just wear socks and still stay cosy.

Wear a Uniqlo heattech long sleeved top underneath, you will ruin ithe line with jacket over the top of the dress. The heattech tops are light, don't add bulk and are very warm.

I'm 50s I'd never go to a formal occasion like a wedding with bare legs I'd go nude tights with that dress I like snags but there's probably not time for delivery

Laurie01 · 13/12/2021 18:05

Nude tights, not dark.
Also a navy coat slung over your shoulders but don't put your arms in. Beautiful dress, I have bought from Closet London before, always impressed. Enjoy!

bcngran · 13/12/2021 18:38

The dress looks gorgeous, and hope you have a lovely time at the wedding and feel great, whichever tights/shoes/boots/coat etc you decide to wear - lots of helpful suggestions here...
But hey! there's nothing wrong with looking like a granny though! I'm a granny and would certainly wear this dress! 'Granny' doesn't = 'ancient crone with zero sense of style any more', as if it ever did, please don't use 'granny' as a thoughtless put-down!! Thanks!

Mylifesadrama · 13/12/2021 18:43

Definately not sheer black tights. They are dated. Like others have said a nude pair.

professionalcockney · 13/12/2021 18:46

Lovely dress!

I'd wear no tights and a fur coat.

I have those shoes in black suede and they're really comfortable.

Have a great time!

Sam1111 · 13/12/2021 19:32

Hi
Definitely tights - flesh colour or natural tan colour. Hope this helps :)

TheTransplantedEnglishwoman · 13/12/2021 19:39

Never mind tights or shoes, or the state of your legs; here's what I'd do with that dress:

  • knee-length black boots, any heel height;
  • long, flowy 'waistcoat' / sleeveless duster jacket (could be from mid-hip level possibly even to below the hem-level of the dress);
  • black-feather fascinator.

Have fun!

Interesting; not entirely mad IMO~)

@bcngran absolutely didn’t mean to offend, I’m sorry.

I really should have said ‘my’ granny ( who always wore american tan tights).

Thank you all for the suggestions and the links. @DonaPatrizia I love the black ankle boots and have similar but I think they do draw attention away from the dress to my feet as @NashvilleQueen says. I have quite big feet too 😂.
I think the fake tan might work but I’m not sure I’d feel quite ‘dressed up’ enough so I’m going to go for some nude tights - I’ll have a look in M&S tomorrow and I’m currently looking at the Wolfords site @MarleneDietrichsSmile - some gorgeous ones on there! Also I may have a look at nude fisnnets @DuckonaBike as I hadn’t thought of those.
I do like snag tights too @THEDEACON but not left enough time for delivery. Def 3 pairs @Bellsandwhistle - if anyone is going to ladder tights, break a nail, fall over - it’s me.
I do have a long velvet coat - and I like the idea of it just slung over my shoulders for the short time I’ll be outside.
Thank you all for the help and I’m glad you like the dress too!

Love the sound of that - very stylish take on the outfit. I’m going to wear the dress again I’m sure so I’ll have a look for a long flowing duster that might work.

I am in my 50s with pale skin and very self-conscious about my pale legs. I like M&S tights - various types either matt or shiny and they do ones for wearing with an open toe shoe

Waterfallgirl · 23/12/2021 22:41

Thanks everyone, I wore the dress with a little vest top underneath and some nude tights, nude shoes. I was complimented on the dress too - and most importantly it was a fabulous day!

I have started wearing nude fishnets. The look like nude tights, but last forever. I can't do bare legs. I'm basically blue.

Blueberrycreampie · 24/12/2021 12:09

Oh great you had a lovely time. I feel a bit puffed up that my suggestion of nude tights was the way to go! I've spent the last 21 months mainly in sweatshirts and leggings😂.

pastypirate · 24/12/2021 12:59

Tights. The dress is amazing you will look fab!

Cam22 · 24/12/2021 13:06

Bare legs in December - fake tan or not - would look ridiculous.

Blossomtoes · 24/12/2021 14:29

Exactly what I was thinking. You did exactly the right thing @Waterfallgirl, I bet you looked wonderful in that beautiful dress.
Marchingredsoldiers · 26/12/2021 07:37

Definately not sheer black tights. They are dated.

I have noticed a mini-skirt, steer black tights and boots trend around me. They seem to be back in again with the teens.

LadyJJ · 26/12/2021 22:46

I'd go bare legged with that gorgeous dress, I'm same age as you.
If you can't bear (bare) legs definitely nude tights that match your skin.
Have a great day!
