So, how do very wealthy people dress day by day?

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 18:08

Very daft thread title i know.
I don't need to know this because I want to emulate it or copy it. I'm not interested in looking rich, I could make the most expensive item in the world look like a bin bag, hehe Blush

But have been in a conversation with my sister who believes rich (or very well off) people don't feel the need to worry about clothes or style so wear very basic, ordinary (even cheap) clothing during the day or school run, etc but get the really expensive stuff out for special occasions and specific pursuits only. So basically you would never guess from the clothing if a person was very well off (generalisation alert!)

My opinion is a bit different in that I would imagine you can enjoy playing with style and might prefer to express your identity with lovely quality pieces, like we all might (depending on our budget). So I mainly presume we are all essentially the same, just having different incomes.
I must admit that having once lived in a wealthy part of the UK a lot of people did tend to just bob about in jeans, tshirt and converse. But that was years ago,

So which is it? P'raps it differs across the UK?

@repottingthescabious

Im not clicking a rag, but have not heard of allegra stratton. I'm a bit out of touch with celeb/royalty/socialite goss

@bellaiceberg - You've not seen the news in the last 24hrs?

Allegra Stratton was adviser to Boris Johnson who resigned yesterday for her remarks and laughing at the Christmas Party held during lockdown last December......

Im with you now, did not know her name. I try to avoid politic and news for my sanity sometimes. Recent covid news so depressing. DP is going on about it downstairs as we speak.

pots of dough but looks like she's just done the school run

A net worth of 1.1m is hardly pots of cash.

@bellaiceberg My best mate has the Arcyteryx Grin. She's a partner in a law firm and honestly, looks like a partner in a law firm our of central casting - she once showed up to the playground at the weekend in a taupe cashmere tracksuit.

Another friend is married to a guy who's dad is a billionaire - she has a North Face x Supreme silver leopard puffer that I covet jealously.

There's a lot of coat porn around these parts Grin

(I've got a SAM parka and a boring black Mackage Kay coat)

Oh I forgot - Rag and Bone and Acne. So much Rag and Bone and Acne. Everyone's got the bloody Newbury boots. And the Acne Esmeta tees and the GIANT blanket scarf.

I'm partial to coat porn, so long as it is under £200.

I had a bright blue arcteryx when i lived in the lakes. It was workable over a puffer for long hikes. Windproof, but sadly the most ugly bloody item i have ever thrown money at. Ridiculously tight hipped with massive shoulders. Not a fan. A huge bird shat on the hood and that gave me an excuse to retire it.

I thought about myself and wondered if excess wealth would alter my perception of how i dress. Would it make me less or more inclined to experiment? Would I dress up or down more, etc.

Depends on which tribe you associate most with.

Comedycook · 09/12/2021 20:59

There's different types of wealth though. Nouveau riche versus old money. City v country. Then it will vary according to nations. So lots of variables.

julieca · 09/12/2021 21:00

My family live in a wealthy village - they are not, they aré renting on a long rent luckily so they can afford it.
Some dress smart, some scruffy, but its all very good quality aka expensive clothes. For men, often jumpers and jackets - but like Prince William wears.
But even if they look scruffy and stained, they will have been expensive when bought. And you can tell, whatever people say about rich people not caring how they look, they are not wearing Primary or ASDA clothing.

julieca · 09/12/2021 21:02

Also for some men, brightly coloured trousers. Always used to be red, but a few other colours are commonish now.

repottingthescabious · 09/12/2021 21:02

@bellaiceberg well she's hard to avoid at teh moment. My point is that many rich people don't make it obvious. For example the people I grew up around did not look outwardly rich but had money in farms and estates.

@sqirrelfriends I don't believe that's all she's worth. She is from a very well heeled background and very well connected. The Chancellor of The Exchequer is godparent to one of her kids. My point is appearances can be deceptive. She hides it well bit like her cash

oh i disagree, i would say which tribe you identify with rather than associate. I am a bit of an introvert, a small scattering of colleagues/friends. None of us dress alike!

Im curious who or what i identify with though. Not sure. My priorities are not clothing related, so my style exists in this sort of separate sphere...perhaps slight boho with a hope of elegance. I like dark academia but not the tumblr version. I spend on clothes but dont have many. I like luxe but not brands. It's complicated Grin

Very true , badly worded on my part.

julieca · 09/12/2021 21:07

@bellaiceberg good point!
Basically rich people have fashions too, they just deny it though.

My (extended) family are the scruffy farmers with a teenage daughter dressed head to toe in Primark that lots of the rich folk look down on and complain when we are much spreading and holding up your journey by moving cows.

julieca · 09/12/2021 21:08

muck spreading, not much

kjdmnbxz54 · 09/12/2021 21:09

Very wealthy people are individuals and dress differently. There isn't a uniform. It also depends on the type of wealth. Asset rich, but cash poor don't waste money on clothes. High earners with a lot of money coming in every month are more likely too.

I know some very polished well dressed wealthy women who happily spend their family money on clothes, hair, nails, personal trainers, gym memberships and look amazing all the time. I know others with probably a higher net worth who look pretty scruffy and don't invest in their appearance at all.

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 21:13

I'm not so much interested in new or old money. Just the mindset of not having to gauge what you spend on clothes. How that would affect us. How it might alter our perception of ourselves and how we approach style.

I wonder do some dress the way they do to evoke a lifestyle they dont have, or dress down to diminish it? Would a person care less about personal or unique style if money was no object?

I suppose this surpasses how or when the money came along, to a point, even though social background and identity does play a part.
A 16 yr old who was born rich to wealthy ex-low income parents will have a different perspective to them, i would think.

True, ive noticed this, but also in my experience the most well off were interestingly ordinary, like i said in my op: skinny jeans, modest top, trainers. The men were often more obvious to be honest.

It must vary across the uk.

The wealthiest (old money) person I know wears lots of holey old leggings from M&S.

But very expensive coat, shoes and handbag.

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 21:22

I think i may have not made it clear in my OP but have tried to in recent comments.

What i am asking is NOT how rich people dress, which is basically all of the replies. I am concerned with how WE approach style and clothing dependent on our income, and whether being wealthier would alter our perception of it. Im sorry if it wasnt clear.

Im already aware of how many different types of wealthy people do dress. Im more interested in the approach or feeling towards it.

I don't think its money that is the key thing. people who like clothes and care about clothes will either follow fashion or have a style of their own that rarely changes. People who don't care about clothes won't and I think that'ss the same regardless of how much money they have....I think you are kind of making an assumption that people with money will always care about clothes.
The only thing I see around here that hints that folk have money is their choice of wellies. Hunters or Barbours are for the wannabees, the real McCoy wear Aigles or Le Chameau and always bigger than their shoes to fit decent socks in them. They don't do it for the label but because they are comfortable ansd durable. My aigles are 14 years old and under the mud they still look like new.

julieca · 09/12/2021 21:24

@bellaiceberg sorry I hadn't realised what you meant. I think who you socialise with alters your perception of how to dress. Because most people want to fit in.

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 21:24

fuck fuck fuck i apologise, my OP title is a dud, i DID ask how they dressed. Blush
blushes into infinity!

Hope ive managed to express the point i so badly illustrated originally Grin
