So, how do very wealthy people dress day by day?

Very daft thread title i know.
I don't need to know this because I want to emulate it or copy it. I'm not interested in looking rich, I could make the most expensive item in the world look like a bin bag, hehe Blush

But have been in a conversation with my sister who believes rich (or very well off) people don't feel the need to worry about clothes or style so wear very basic, ordinary (even cheap) clothing during the day or school run, etc but get the really expensive stuff out for special occasions and specific pursuits only. So basically you would never guess from the clothing if a person was very well off (generalisation alert!)

My opinion is a bit different in that I would imagine you can enjoy playing with style and might prefer to express your identity with lovely quality pieces, like we all might (depending on our budget). So I mainly presume we are all essentially the same, just having different incomes.
I must admit that having once lived in a wealthy part of the UK a lot of people did tend to just bob about in jeans, tshirt and converse. But that was years ago,

So which is it? P'raps it differs across the UK?

I agree with your sister. I would be classed as v wealthy and I wear sports gear most of the time during the day and often it’s not expensive stuff either but to a night out or when I can’t wear lounge gear I would wear more expensive stuff

lazylinguist · 09/12/2021 19:21

They dress differently from each other, because they are individuals, not a homogenous group. Some don't care about style, some do. Some dress conservatively, some eccentrically. Some spend a lot on clothes, some don't. Just the same as not all poor people dress the same and not all middle income people dress the same. Of course lots of very wealthy people wear jeans and a t-shirt a lot. Why wouldn't they?

Kanaloa · 09/12/2021 19:21

If they love the gym they probably wear gym gear. If they like horse riding they might wear riding clothes. If they are an artist maybe some paint splattered joggers and a tunic. If they work in a corporate setting maybe a nice suit. Maybe if they are elderly or physically disabled they might wear easy comfy clothing so that they don’t have to struggle with fiddly buttons/zips. If they live on a mountain in Wyoming and love hunting a good snow suit.

Life isn’t a Jilly Cooper or Donna Tartt - there are no accepted uniforms, people are individuals and dress to their personal circumstances. The wealthy are not one homogenous blob but a varied group of people with different interests, circumstances, and environments.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/12/2021 19:24

Everyone I know is old money and wears ancient clothes. Jeans and jumpers with holes covered in dog hair. Coats they’ve had for years. Filthy cars etc. Rural so might be different.

Kanaloa · 09/12/2021 19:26

But this is too simplistic, I haven't noticed this outside of generalisations at all. It is like saying all working class men like football. Perhaps they do!?

Oh of course they do. If you don’t like football they don’t let you become a painter or a plumbing apprentice.

That’s why my husband went into a trade. He needed a job where he could wear a boiler suit so that he could wear his Man U shirt every day underneath it. Plus the white van obviously helps as they use it to watch games in.

I work with HMWI and also live in a wealthy area near a bonkers expensive private school.

You see a lot of Gucci, Golden Goose, Isabel Marant and Chanel on the mums. Canada Goose, SAM and Arcyteryx for the outwear. Dior Book totes seem popular for the school run, as are Mansur Gavriel bags.

Dads wearing a lot of Patagonia/North Face and Kith and Supreme for the cool dads.

Patagonia vests and chinos for the finance dads. Suits from your tailor in Hong Kong for the old school finance guys. All birds and Pangaia for the tech bro dads.

Watches - Panerai, Cartier, Rolex, Hermes.

@Luredbyapomegranate

It would differ massively depending on the people concerned - aristos, footballers, hedge-fund managers and tech mms don’t have a whole bunch in common, in dress or anything else.

It’s a silly question

and this is a silly answer. It attempts to put a hamfisted stopper on any dialogue or conversation. If it doesn't interest you that's ok. Personally i find it interesting.

Can I ask why? Im curious as to whether our financial situation would alter what we want to wear. If less was available would we feel the desire to dress up more?

I do love nice fabrics and find talking and thinking about clothes enjoyable, but i wonder if my attitudes would alter if i was very well off. Obviously our priorities shift depending on income, but how it affects how we dress is more ambiguous i think.

Im not wealthy, if i had to describe me possibly average MC, so definitely in the 'joules/fatface/boden' category as someone said above. But I don't buy from those shops and prefer more old fashioned stuff (ebay provides!)
I did notice many wealthier people tended to care less about 'individual style' if that makes sense. I would love to know why!

Like everyone else had said, too simplistic. It's like saying how lower middle class people dress? Well.. depends!

M&S? Grin

It is still worth thinking about though, generalisations aside. Attitudes towards clothes do alter across income brackets and backgrounds.

I hear Liverpool is extremely dressy, so a night out there will involve pulling out all the stops. Is this culturally specific to liverpool or...if you see what i mean. It's interesting to me, but seems to make people spiky on here.

But it really does depend not just on the type of people but their interests.

I have a pair of friends who are sisters, from very old generational money. One of them has gone full country-can't-be-bothered with an ancient Barbour and a very practical haircut. The other lives in the city and works for a fashion magazine and is constantly in interesting, cutting-edge designs from designers you've never heard of.

Neither of them participate in the kind of footballer-conspicuous-consumption competition. They wouldn't be caught dead with a Louis Vuitton monogram tote, for instance. But nor have they gone full Sloane Ranger like one of their cousins, also a friend, who's delightful but couldn't be more predictable if she tried; for a while her headband collection put Blair Waldorf to shame.

All of three of them are very wealthy, or at least their parents are. But they all dress very differently on a day-to-day basis.

I always wear Shanelle unless I'm untin, shootin or fishin, innit

LapinR0se · 09/12/2021 19:59

We are relatively comfortable and my biggest expenses are cashmere in the winter, silk in summer, very good coats and decent shoes. I also have Botox, hair extensions, shellac nails but all verrrrrryyyyyu natural and subtle looking so no one would ever know.

EightWheelGirl · 09/12/2021 20:00

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping

Who is buying the expensive casual clothes that are available then? It’s not the non-wealthy people. Confused
The middle class.

My bosses are absolutely minted. Like, bought a brand new £200k SVR just as a pool car for us all to drive. Then when we were all fighting over it he also bought an AMG Merc and two identical top spec 7 series - one in white and one in black. Also just bought a country mansion with a 16 acre estate just as a charitable enterprise. My line manager described them as modest in my first interview, saying they won’t spend more than £200k on a car. 😳

Most of the time they’re wearing North Face body warmers and tracksuits.
