So, how do very wealthy people dress day by day?

Very daft thread title i know.
I don't need to know this because I want to emulate it or copy it. I'm not interested in looking rich, I could make the most expensive item in the world look like a bin bag, hehe Blush

But have been in a conversation with my sister who believes rich (or very well off) people don't feel the need to worry about clothes or style so wear very basic, ordinary (even cheap) clothing during the day or school run, etc but get the really expensive stuff out for special occasions and specific pursuits only. So basically you would never guess from the clothing if a person was very well off (generalisation alert!)

My opinion is a bit different in that I would imagine you can enjoy playing with style and might prefer to express your identity with lovely quality pieces, like we all might (depending on our budget). So I mainly presume we are all essentially the same, just having different incomes.
I must admit that having once lived in a wealthy part of the UK a lot of people did tend to just bob about in jeans, tshirt and converse. But that was years ago,

So which is it? P'raps it differs across the UK?

I live in quite an affluent area, drive past a Prep school on my way to work, have no idea about labels/designers, big expensive cars, glossy but subtle hair, upmarket leisure wear, down coats, fabulous teeth and very few facial lines appear to be the norm.
Walk the dog in a more rural setting and 'the money' and how they dress very much depends on age, there is the mix that @allfurcoatnoknickers mentions, plus the old school Le Chameau wellies set, which they chuck off in a draughty boot room and have an ancient assortment for 'townies' to wear when visiting, along with an assortment of waxed/tweed coats in various states of disrepair. They have a special smell, it is part wet labrador, part tack room, part school dinners and part floral, would make a lovely candle ! Grin

@ShinyNewStart

I lived in central Paris for a bit. Unless you're a gazillionaire, no one has more than one small cupboard for clothes, so there's no space for anything that you'd only wear once a year. People who wore bright colours were therefore instantly obviously from the suburbs and less wealthy! The real giveaway was shoes though. Everyone walks everywhere, so only whores and tourists wear heels. The clue is how worn the shoes are. If you're walking a lot each day you go through shoes fast, so expensive new shoes = rich, because they need replacing every few weeks.
Whores? Really?
WhoppingBigBackside · 09/12/2021 20:18

What sort of rich person do you wish to emulate @bellaiceberg?
Kate Cambrdge, Sophie Wessex, Michelle Obama & Samantha Cameron all have a distinctive style that is still fairly achieveable

tobee · 09/12/2021 20:21

Maybe they still buy cheap stuff and that's why they're wealthy?🤔

Do you think Jack Grealish pays for a stylist? And he's being trolled?😄

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 20:22

@allfurcoatnoknickers

I work with HMWI and also live in a wealthy area near a bonkers expensive private school.

You see a lot of Gucci, Golden Goose, Isabel Marant and Chanel on the mums. Canada Goose, SAM and Arcyteryx for the outwear. Dior Book totes seem popular for the school run, as are Mansur Gavriel bags.

Dads wearing a lot of Patagonia/North Face and Kith and Supreme for the cool dads.

Patagonia vests and chinos for the finance dads. Suits from your tailor in Hong Kong for the old school finance guys. All birds and Pangaia for the tech bro dads.

Watches - Panerai, Cartier, Rolex, Hermes.

Sounds like when i lived in Ambleside! Although the regular locals either wore jeans and a jumper with a nameless anorak or bags over their shoes in the rain. I am still in awe of the shite Arcteryx sell for astronimical prices. Never understood the appeal of Patagonia designs, either, although i do admire their ethics. Fjallraven on the other hand, were very good quality, if you are over 6 ft tall..

The classic Mumsnet cliche!
Isn’t it just? However I am disappointed that nobody has trotted out “money shouts but wealth whispers” yet. I feel cheated.

It would differ massively depending on the people concerned - aristos, footballers, hedge-fund managers and tech mms don’t have a whole bunch in common, in dress or anything else.

It’s a silly question

and this is a silly answer. It attempts to put a hamfisted stopper on any dialogue or conversation. If it doesn't interest you that's ok. Personally i find it interesting.

Oh don't be so defensive OP. It's your approach - asking how 'rich people' in general dress - that's dopey, not the topic. Of course it's an interesting topic area - social divisions and tribalism usually is.

One of my adult sons and daughter in laws are wealthy. She is absolutely lovely, always looks well groomed, nice hair, nails done etc. She doesn’t have a massive wardrobe but the outfits she has are expensive and put together well. She has a few very expensive handbags. Nothing is saved for best . I did ask where one particular dress was from as I loved it and the price was £300 which is expensive to me but maybe not to others.
I’m trying to buy less cheap stuff and go for a few nice pieces instead.

Grumpyosaurus · 09/12/2021 20:32

The wealthiest people I know are landowners.

Clapped out wellies or yard boots, jeans, lumberjack shirts, and well-worn Barbours are all popular. They are indistinguishable from the bulk of the dog walkers, but we know who they are.

@Laiste

The folk round here with pots and pots of cash are mostly wearing holey leggings, filthy body-warmers and crocs. or Hunter wellies. But then we're in the countryside and most of the wealthy are into their horses ect. They drive properly old battered 4x4s and do school pick up with bits of hay sticking out of the doors and mud all over the windows.
I must look like I’m minted! Grin

Its also a north / south thing. My southern ex is from old money. He dresses in rags, clothes from the 80s that were his or his late fathers. He is very eco friendly in his justification of it and fits right in in his posho university city.
In the north he gets denied service, treated appalingly and barely let in nice places. I find it very humourous, as he's an ex, but with his overt posho arrogance he really doesnt even see it, or let himself see it happening.
Up here they think he's a drug addict or homeless. :) Hes very anti drugs and, unfortunately, a millionnaire.

You are awfully easy to tease you know... if you want to pass as rich, work on your confidence before you clothes. Grin

Who reads this rubbish. I wonder why a newspaper would focus on someone's 'net worth'. Is it so the 'plebs' can salivate with envy or disgust? Im not clicking a rag, but have not heard of allegra stratton. I'm a bit out of touch with celeb/royalty/socialite goss.

And what does 'doing a school run' look like?
Ive noticed many mums here over the years concerned about how peole dress for it.

Again, I think it is all fascinating, and can't see why so any people have been a bit snippy with me. Ive provided many points or discussion that are a bit deeper than 'emulating posh'; thoughts and ideas as to how and why we dress a certain way can be interesting. It's like people would rather argue than enjoy discussion.

Im sure if people read all of my posts where i have contributed to the actual discussion, it would be apparent that i wanted a conversation, not tips. If you cant get your head around a lighthearted or versatile debate about income and clothes, perhaps it isnt my confidence that needs a boost.

Not once have i asked for advice, tips or suggested I want to look rich.
But then you know that, dont you, having read the OP.

I worked for a woman once who did school run in the likes of; long Cashmere jumper paired with Armani skinny jeans and V trainers. Her jumper alone cost £200. She was always dressed very simple / understated, but you could tell the quality of her clothes were outstanding (so was her perfume).

The OP has told us several times that she’s not interested in ‘passing as rich’. Leave off.
wellmanaged · 09/12/2021 20:44

It is a silly question, sorry to say. Are you talking about wealth only or wealth and class?

We can't possibly answer because there are all sorts of wealthy people from all social backgrounds. Even those who come under the same category won't think the same.

You'll particularly get the old fashioned and extreme stereotypes of wealthy upper class landowners with battered and moth eaten clothing I suspect. In reality you just can't say. The quality of clothing, if you have lived in a wealthy area, does stand out in my opinion, and more expensive brands will be recognised if you're able to recognise them.

But you have answered with your opinion and that is the point. You have at least contributed your thoughts on the question. Silly or not, i appreciate it:)

That was the point of my post, to hear thoughts on the subject of income and style. Not many people have bothered, but thanks to those of you who have!

I don't know about the very wealthy, but I do know a few people with fairly high salaries (between about £150 -£350k). They generally wear good quality clothes but don't replace them often and aren't immune to looking tatty. Trendy is not a word of use to describe them, but I think that's more to do with their age/ career choices.

@bellaiceberg - You've not seen the news in the last 24hrs?

Allegra Stratton was adviser to Boris Johnson who resigned yesterday for her remarks and laughing at the Christmas Party held during lockdown last December......

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 20:50

By the way, good question - income or class?

I think my post is about how income affects our attitudes and thoughts about day to day clothing. I thought about myself and wondered if excess wealth would alter my perception of how i dress. Would it make me less or more inclined to experiment? Would I dress up or down more, etc.

That kind of thing. Surely someone has thoughts on this!
