So, how do very wealthy people dress day by day?

Very daft thread title i know.
I don't need to know this because I want to emulate it or copy it. I'm not interested in looking rich, I could make the most expensive item in the world look like a bin bag, hehe Blush

But have been in a conversation with my sister who believes rich (or very well off) people don't feel the need to worry about clothes or style so wear very basic, ordinary (even cheap) clothing during the day or school run, etc but get the really expensive stuff out for special occasions and specific pursuits only. So basically you would never guess from the clothing if a person was very well off (generalisation alert!)

My opinion is a bit different in that I would imagine you can enjoy playing with style and might prefer to express your identity with lovely quality pieces, like we all might (depending on our budget). So I mainly presume we are all essentially the same, just having different incomes.
I must admit that having once lived in a wealthy part of the UK a lot of people did tend to just bob about in jeans, tshirt and converse. But that was years ago,

So which is it? P'raps it differs across the UK?

It's just a silly question. It's as silly as asking, 'What do white people wear' or 'What do 50 year olds wear' or 'What do people who listen to Justin Bieber' wear. It is impossible to answer.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 09/12/2021 18:31

Who is buying the expensive casual clothes that are available then? It’s not the non-wealthy people. Confused

Cotswoldmama · 09/12/2021 18:35

The people with the most money look the most disheveled where I live. The kids have trousers that are so short they look like they're cropped. They all live in hand me downs, never seem to wear anything new. The mums are quite often in oversized clothes and outfits can be quite eccentric and eclectic. I would say the poorer people generally look more well kept. I think the richer you are the less you care about what people think and the poorer you are the more you care.

Libertaire · 09/12/2021 18:39

Premier League footballers wear expensive designer logo t-shirts & hoodies, track suit bottoms or designer ripped jeans, box-fresh, limited edition trainers and blingy gold watches.

Laiste · 09/12/2021 18:42

The folk round here with pots and pots of cash are mostly wearing holey leggings, filthy body-warmers and crocs. or Hunter wellies. But then we're in the countryside and most of the wealthy are into their horses ect. They drive properly old battered 4x4s and do school pick up with bits of hay sticking out of the doors and mud all over the windows.

LumosSolem · 09/12/2021 18:49

Like this @Libertaire 😁

Think how much money Grealish spent to look so bloody ridiculous

But also their hand me downs are better quality so they don't have as much need to buy new things.

"I would imagine you can enjoy playing with style and might prefer to express your identity with lovely quality pieces, like we all might "

Plenty of non-rich people are also not interested in clothes though.

MintJulia · 09/12/2021 18:57

My boss seems to live in jeans, brogues, navy aran sweater and brushed cotton check shirt.

Plus a tweedy country style jacket over the top.

Not flashy but somehow expensive.

Twilightstarbright · 09/12/2021 18:57

I think accessories are the giveaway- diamond studs, expensive watch, designer bag. Not necessarily blingy/OTT.

bellaiceberg · 09/12/2021 18:59

Not sure why so many people find such topics offensive. I think it is all fascinating part of the world of fashion/style. I don't have an emotional reaction to the subject though, so possibly can't see why anyone would.

My interest in this subject is that I pondered to myself that if money was absolutely no object, would it alter the approach to how i dress, or what i wore. I do think that is an interesting question, but then i like turning ideas over and learning new things about me, so am sorry if it has pee'd anyone off!

And the answer, I haven't decided really.
I even wonder if my tastes would alter, and whether unconsciously many of us express identity through how we dress, even if only a bit. How an unlimited budget would affect that...i dunno!

re read my op, i even stated that with 'like we all might'.

but then i doubt you will care to read the op as you are more likely spoiling for a fight.

This was exactly what I was going to say! I live in an expensive part of London and most people are wearing normal high street clothes, but maybe at the more expensive end. The give away is expensive watches, coats, diamond rings and other jewellery.

This baffles me, i grew up in a place such as this, farming, horses, etc. But there wasnt a stereotype at all. Not so far as clothing. Except for dogs, a commonality across all wealthy rural homes! Grin

Tiaras and ball gowns. That’s what I wear day to day.

slipperyeel · 09/12/2021 19:03

I think there’s a town v country divide. I live in London and although people aren’t overly flashy there are a lot of expensive clothes out there - good fabrics, better fitting plus heirloom pieces like the Chanel coat my friend was given by her mum Envy

glacialseafoam · 09/12/2021 19:10

I’d consider us to be well off, although other people’s criteria for ‘having money’ has a large range.

I buy primark jeans and T-shirts for everyday wear and wear them til the holes are inappropriate/can not reasonably put them on/mend them any more. Charity shop jumpers. I will happily spend on wellies and walking boots but don’t see it as being worth buying anything more expensive for daily wear as have animals and get muddy daily.

Our older neighbour is definitely very very well off. He wears an overall, jeans older than me, checked shirt with holes in. Holes in socks. Wooly hat. Boots come from farm shop £40. He’s had the same ‘going out’ outfit for 30+ years and also has a ‘wedding’ suit he inherited from his dad 35+ years ago.

We’re rural though, people in towns/cities obviously may not be the same. I do agree that the people with the least money dress in the most expensive clothes as far as I can see.

I would have to own my own island to dress the way i might in my dreams! I'm thinking of something like Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes. Oh god i would need just a bit^ of money for the island which would possibly make the textile part of my dreams seem cheap in comparison!

They won’t be wearing the same clothes as people with a lot less money as they won’t go into the same shops when they do need new stuff.
In the same way that a habitual Waitrose shopper might just have pasta and jar sauce for dinner but they will buy it at Waitrose, not Lidl.

MOmiMa · 09/12/2021 19:14

Nauveau-riche wear latest designs. Old-money-rich wear rags.

Im sure this was observed by Agatha Christie (???), either Marple of Poirot; the presumption that a young girl who had gone missing was from a humble background due to her wearing Sunday best, or something similar.

But this is too simplistic, I haven't noticed this outside of generalisations at all. It is like saying all working class men like football. Perhaps they do!?

Dubarry boots and a waxed Barbour jacket always looks classy to me. With a nice cream jumper.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/12/2021 19:18

It would differ massively depending on the people concerned - aristos, footballers, hedge-fund managers and tech mms don’t have a whole bunch in common, in dress or anything else.

It’s a silly question

yellowflowersintherain · 09/12/2021 19:19

I find this interesting too OP!

I live in an area known for being affluent but I'm not convinced you can tell by the clothes. There are the usual mum 'tribes' on the school run - the joules/boden/fat face types, the trend followers with their vejas and mom jeans, the gym bunnies in leggings and a sweatshirt.

I think the one area you do see a difference is the women going to corporate/office type jobs. They usually have very good quality laptop bags, shoes, coats from places like LK Bennett, Hobbs, Baukjen, The Fold etc. In my old area the working mums were more likely to be in mid range high street, Next, M&S etc.

Other than that, I think the main two differences compared to other areas I've lived are:

  1. Hardly anyone is overweight
  2. People pay more attention to grooming and are much more likely to have expensive hairstyle and nice nails (although both can be quite low key in terms of colours etc).

I pay much less attention to men's clothes if I'm honest so apologies that I've only commented on the women!!
