Cutting long hair short after separation from DH

SwaylorTwift · 06/12/2021 10:38

My hair is very long and it's been that way for over twenty years. I wear it in braid pinned up most of the time or down curled for special occasions. I dye it (though starting to lighten it to mix with grey)

Anyway, had a horrible time with DH. Split as found out about his affair. Things may resolve
I'm too hurt and angry at the moment.

And I have an overwhelming urge to cut my hair very short. Just feeling it around my face makes me irritated and I almost want to grab scissors and hack it off.

DH loves my long hair, but I did too.

But now I am longing for pixie style crop.

So should I follow my instinct or resist?

I wanted to go to a pixie cut from waist length hair and every hairdresser told me it wouldn't suit me/I shouldn't do it yet/I needed to do it gradually 🙄 I'm a grown bloody woman! I got so annoyed that I hacked my own hair off to jaw length and then went to a hairdresser and asked her to fix it into a pixie cut.

It's bizarre to me that hairdressers refuse to do something that you ask for. One of them actually said you need to talk to your husband about it because I don't want him coming in and shouting at me!

If you want a pixie cut, get it 🤷🏻‍♀️ it's your hair and even if you don't like it, it will grow!

I still love my pixie cut and would not go back to long hair.

Had my long hair dramatically chopped after new hairdresser said longer hair aged me. Love my short hair, no regrets and I do think I (hopefully) look younger as a result!

Make sure it’s a very good hairdresser.
Make sure you then use good shampoo and conditioner - I found olaprex 8 helps keep my short crop looking thicker and healthier.

Straight to pixie! No half measures.

jay55 · 07/12/2021 06:24

I've long hair and chopped it to chin length a few times.
Mine still grows pretty fast.

Go for it. Enjoy the change. Get a new lipstick at the same time, perfume too if you can afford.

I had long hair, one length, naturally blonde and went to a pixie cut. Everyone else thinks I should have kept it but I love it.

It's liberating. I can do literally anything and it takes minutes to put it right. It's always "done" rather than in a messy bun and I don't have to plan/think about washing and drying my hair,it takes literally minutes.

For me though, all the inbetween styles are the worst of both worlds. They don't have the glamour of long hair and they're a lot more work than either long or very short hair. I also think short but not very short hair , shortsyes that need a lot of styling are very aging. Bob's are the worst of the lot IMO. A Bob is not low maintenance...which shows what I knowGrin

gogohm · 07/12/2021 06:28

A good cut yes, dramatic pixie cut a would caution against because it's hard to then change to longer once you are older - hair grows slower

GoodnightGrandma · 07/12/2021 06:28

I agree that you need to cut the husband out of your life.
Cutting your hair feels almost like a punishment for both of you. Don’t do it then regret it when it doesn’t make you feel any better, it might make you feel worse.

RockinHorseShit · 07/12/2021 06:31

Don't, not now, it's a subconscious knee jerk two fingers up your H, not for you & you'll likely regret it.

Short hair is way more up keep anyway

LunaTheCat · 07/12/2021 06:41

Do it!
Hair will always grow.
Some before and after pics too!

Gearedtoyou · 07/12/2021 06:46

If you're used to having your hair up a lot, going short isn't the leap you think it is. If you like it up, it the same basic shape cut short.

UseOfWeapons · 07/12/2021 07:01

Do it!
I did, from very long to pixie in one session, and donated my hair to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children on chemo.
Best thing I ever did, a quick trim every few weeks, no maintenance or hairdryer!
Very liberating!
Good luck!

CheddarGorgeous · 07/12/2021 07:21

Do it! You want to so just do it.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 07/12/2021 07:53

I'd hold off on a drastic chop for now.

If you're only starting to go get white hairs, how about How about highlights or lowlights and a slight restyle?

Shadedog · 07/12/2021 08:19

I kept long hair I didn’t like and didn’t suit me for YEARS because everyone told me short hair was too much work. I finally got it cut, probably in response to feeling a bit “mumsy” when I really started to get down about being a sahm and was worried I’d never get a career back. I wanted a pixie cut, hairdressers refused Hmm but “agreed” to a bob, which wasn’t what I wanted at all and didn’t help with my emotional feelings of wanting to reinvent myself. This was at least 15 years ago and I can remember sitting in the chair feeling like a twat with my unwanted “compromise” bob and she asked me if I liked it and for the first time ever I didn’t do the “ooh, yes, lovely thanks!” pretend to look at the back of my head in my mirror performance and just told her I wanted it short, like I’d asked for and she did it and I felt like a million dollars. I also discovered that it’s complete bollocks that short hair is more work. It drys in seconds and I run a bit of wax through before I leave the house. When I had long hair I’d go months without getting it cut but now I usually book my next appointment when I’m in for 6-8 weeks time so it’s a commitment from that pov. I’ve also had quite a few styles of short hair (including sinead O’Connor short) down to jaw length almost bob whereas my long hair was always the same (I’m not good at up styles).
I had a 14 inch plait to donate, which took me to above shoulder bob level, then a huge pile of hair on the floor.

CookieMachine · 07/12/2021 09:04

I've had Hairdressers try to tell me not to trim my hair "let's just cut enough to get rid of split ends".
No, you're the customer, you get to decide. Hair grows back if you find you don't love a style.

I got my hair cut to a pixie cut ages ago after having long hair like yours.
Best. Decision. Ever.
Super easy to just wash and go. Love it. Or go for something to your shoulders if you're a bit undecided...
Or the Rachel cut (from Friends)

SwaylorTwift · 08/12/2021 06:21

I have a hair appointment today so I will let you know how brave I am!

Thank you for all sharing your experiences with long to short hair.

Malibuismysecrethome · 10/12/2021 21:09

I hope the Op isn’t regretting cutting her hair

FrazzledY9Parent · 11/12/2021 07:53

How did it go, OP?
I have a pixie and it is zero maintenance.- I love it!

Frazzled2207 · 11/12/2021 08:02

Placemarking for updates!

8MinutesToSunrise · 11/12/2021 08:02

Go for it. It'll grow back if you want it to
