What do I wear in the evenings - skinny jeans a no??

bookworm1982 · 01/12/2021 22:56

So I understand that skinny jeans are now a no no no which has delighted me as I hated them (so uncomfortable) and LOVE wearing my baggy comfortable mum jeans. However, despite that wearing mum jeans with DMs/converse during the day is great, what about at night when I get dressed to go out? I've got some lovely shirts and sparkly top which -in my opinion - would look best with some nice tight skinny trousers and boots/heels, but if skinny jeans are out? What the fuck do I wear on my bottoms?

I'm 39 and losing the grip on trends... please help me xx

Someone just mentioned the current fashion is a baggy bottom half with a fitted top - very true, but it’s damn hard to make it work. A skinny bottom half and a looser top is far easier.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 04/12/2021 08:51

Boot cut jeans or wide leg trousers, both with heels, if it’s dry outside. If it’s raining then dress or skirt and tights. I’m particularly enjoying the midi skirt and crop top look - it’s surprisingly forgiving since the skirt is high waisted.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 04/12/2021 08:52

And I think baggy tops can still work, you just have to tuck them in, either into the waistband or if it’s a very long top, your bra band.

MargosKaftan · 04/12/2021 08:52

@Coffeepot72 - see i am old. I remember the stress of moving from the "flattering" look of tight top half to showcase good boobs, coupled with a loose bottom half to hide problems with big thighs/tummy or unshapely legs. The tight trousers /leggings and shapeless tops were hard to get your head round.

I dont think skinny jeans are out, more that they arent in. Bit like Uggs. There will be a point they tip over into really looking dated in the way mum jeans did in the early 00s.

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/12/2021 10:37

Can't quite get my head around the "skinny jeans out" but "leggings in". They are essentially the same, just the jeans are heavier and warmer!

Coffeepot72 · 04/12/2021 10:40

@MargosKaftan I’m no spring chicken either and agree that whenever ‘bottoms’ change shape it’s a real headache! Necessitating new tops, shoes, boots etc.

I agree and it feels quite 90s. As someone who was a teenager then and often wore baggy wide leg jeans or combat trousers and a tight cropped top, I can’t seem to get it to not feel dated either. Tight bottoms like leggings, with an oversized jumper or shirt just feels more current for me.

But it’s not current, though. Not any more.

The young ones, who have no recollection of the 90s at all, are all about the wide-legged jeans, and fitted crop tops. None of them are wearing skinny jeans.

It’s full circle for me, as the 90s was my heyday too, and it’s interesting to see kids and teens embrace that look, but with a 20s vibe…

OhMyCrump · 05/12/2021 17:44

Fitted top (or even a bodysuit!) tucked into high waisted flares or mom jeans.
Mom jeans slightly rolled up with a heeled boot.

Coffeepot72 · 05/12/2021 18:21

I was a teenager in the 80s and ‘fashion’ meant skinny jeans, a big jumper and suede pixie boots - bliss! It’s definitely a silhouette I’m more comfortable with. Duran Duran were fab in those days too …

I think for a woman in her late 30s (me) looking at the shops I buy my clothes from, the skinny bottom, oversize top look is current as it’s on a lot of models but I realise it’s not trendy and someone half my age is very much in baggy bottoms and tighter (although also often baggy) tops.

Thanks for all your replies. I got hit with Covid so going out has been the last thing on my mind Shock I'm out this Thursday now and have decided to forget jeans/trousers altogether and am wearing my new mid-calf flat chunky black boots from Tower London, black tights, a short leather skirt (I'm 39 but figured I could wear short skirt if I have black tights and flat boots?!) and a beautiful dusk pink shirt from Zara.

@GiveYourHeadAWobble

I think flared jeans look nice with heels.
They do with heels but not boots and it's too cold for heels right now

@Magicmagician

How about instead of jeans, a skirt with opaque tights and boots (dms would work)? Your tops might work tucked in to the skirts too.
Yep, I going for this look!

@Delatron

I committed to the ‘skinny jeans are out’ trend in the summer. So cropped girlfriend jeans with sandals or trainers/ flares with a low wedge. Tighter/shorter tops but no crop tops!!

However in winter it’s too hard. Especially when it’s freezing. I tried last week. I had loose fitting leather look trousers and a top but as it was freezing I had to wear a big fluffy coat and boots and they just didn’t look right and I felt uncomfortable all night.

I reverted back to a skinny (a slightly loss skinny) and boots last night with a vest top and slouchy lovely cashmere jumper and felt much happier abs I think I looked nicer, if less fashionable.

The fashion is basically baggy jeans and a tight crop top and I can’t make that work!

I love a jumpsuits for this reason. And I wear leggings in the day as they are acceptable with chunky knits/puffers and boots. I’d look like a teenager in baggy jeans and a puffer. Plus I like my legs (and not my tummy!!)

Forgot about leggings. I thought they'd really had their day??

I tried buying cigarette trousers too, but in my opinion they only looked good with strappy high heels, they looked AWFUL with boots, even heeled boots. I don't want to wear strappy high heels this time of year!

Glad you're sorted OP and thanks for the thread. I was out last night, just a casual thing, and could not work out why everything was looking wrong with my straight jeans. This thread has shown the way... and I do remember replacing tonnes of tops when skinny jeans came in, it must be just something we have to do when the bottoms shape changes.

dropitlikeitsloth · 15/12/2021 09:53

Maybe they have but I bought some lovely ones from M&S recently, two pairs of black leggings with gold zips that are thick and more trouser material (but skinny) a black cord pair and a black suede pair that are absolute faves now.

I wear them with everything.

Gonnagetgoing · 15/12/2021 09:54

I definitely wear black skinny jeans (or grey) as they go with so much.

Love cigarette pants but they do only work with heels.

Mom jeans are good with ankle boots but you have to turn them up and faff about with getting the turnup right. For me, I almost want a slither of skin just at the top of the boot. Any lower and it looks frumpy.

what you could wear instead:-

Black knee or other length skirt - I've got an old knee length sort of tiny pleats (like Issey Miyake Pleats Please clothes but not as flowy) black skirt which looks good with sparkly jumpers, blouses etc.

Black crepe/luxury fabric harem trousers or 'peg' trousers.

Black trousers with a sequin trim or glitter all over (M&S had some or Matalan).

Sequin skirt preferably black.

@StCharlotte

Skinny jeans are only out on Mumsnet and have been out on Mumsnet for so long they are in danger of being back in on Mumsnet.

Meanwhile in the real world, shops are selling them and women are happily wearing them.

This ^^

Ignore the number fashion police, and look around you. Plenty of people are still wearing skinny jeans. Wear what suits you and makes you feel good.
