What do I wear in the evenings - skinny jeans a no??

bookworm1982 · 01/12/2021 22:56

So I understand that skinny jeans are now a no no no which has delighted me as I hated them (so uncomfortable) and LOVE wearing my baggy comfortable mum jeans. However, despite that wearing mum jeans with DMs/converse during the day is great, what about at night when I get dressed to go out? I've got some lovely shirts and sparkly top which -in my opinion - would look best with some nice tight skinny trousers and boots/heels, but if skinny jeans are out? What the fuck do I wear on my bottoms?

I'm 39 and losing the grip on trends... please help me xx

I'm the same age and I just wear skinny jeans. Cant see why you wouldn't if you like them?

dementedpixie · 01/12/2021 22:58

I dont care if skinny jeans are supposed to be unfashionable as its the only shape I find flattering for my body. I wouldn't wear any other style of jeans

Confusedteacher · 01/12/2021 23:02

I had the same dilemma recently re skinny jeans and boots and decided to just go for it- I am not young/cool/skinny enough to pull off mom jeans and heels!

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 23:03

But OP says she DOESNT like skinny jeans!!!

dementedpixie · 01/12/2021 23:07

@WheelieBinPrincess

But OP says she DOESNT like skinny jeans!!!
She also said she had tops that would go best with skinny jeans but as she thinks they are out of fashion she shouldn't wear them.
StCharlotte · 01/12/2021 23:12

Skinny jeans are only out on Mumsnet and have been out on Mumsnet for so long they are in danger of being back in on Mumsnet.

Meanwhile in the real world, shops are selling them and women are happily wearing them.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 01/12/2021 23:13

I think flared jeans look nice with heels.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 23:14

Yes but she says she finds them uncomfortable, so is clearly asking for alternative suggestions. I personally only wear skinny jeans and don’t care if they’re out of fashion but there might be other things I’d think about wearing if I also didn’t like them.

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/12/2021 23:15

Exactly. Flared jeans or trousers would be worth a go.

bookworm1982 · 01/12/2021 23:24

Ha ha no need to argue over little old me! Yes I do find skinny jeans uncomfortable, but I would wear them
In th eve with a nice shirt/top if there was nothing better... I'm just wondering what else is in right now besides mum jeans etc, flared trousers? I know I could reach this myself but being lazy and thought there might be some fashionistas around to helpGrin

I have some slim boot cut trousers (black) which work well with heels but you need to be careful with tops (tops that work with skinnies don’t necessarily work with boot cuts) and check the proportions as it’s a different silhouette- if that makes sense. I also have some very slim ankle grazer trousers which look good with heels. You just have to accept chilly ankles on your night out!

Pheasantlysurprised · 03/12/2021 12:00

i dont get why you would ask advice about skinny jeans if you hated them. Allow yourself to avoid stuff that doesnt make you happy.

that said i cant relate to mum jeans either, i still think they are more painful to wear than skinnies! In fact i think all jeans that arent baggy are uncomfortable, but i dont like the feel of denim..

How about a slouchy trouser or a sleek midi/maxi skirt? A dress would certainly cut out the worry about finding the right top!

Thatsplentyjack · 03/12/2021 12:03

I got a pair of leather look/wet look leggings from hollister that have a fleece lining in them. They are so comfortable!

Magicmagician · 03/12/2021 12:16

How about instead of jeans, a skirt with opaque tights and boots (dms would work)? Your tops might work tucked in to the skirts too.

cannaethink · 03/12/2021 12:24

I have some Vintage Slim jeans from Gap which are a more relaxed skinny. I bought them for exactly the same dilemma as you! The cigarette jeans at Gap are similar too.

Plutonium7000 · 03/12/2021 12:48

I just wear dresses when out now. Either with DMs, smart trainers or sandals depending on location/weather. I have cardis and blazers to throw over the top if needed.

Not sure if that's a helpful answer or not but for me, it's comfy and hugely mimimises the thought and faff involved in going out!

StrongSunglasses · 03/12/2021 12:58

Wide leg trousers with a chunky sole/platform/block heel are a good look imo.

RainCloude · 03/12/2021 13:31

Definitely a slinky midi skirt

I agree skinny jeans are dated now and in danger of looking frumpy.

This is style and beauty board after all and a place to talk about trends and fashion.

MargosKaftan · 03/12/2021 13:58

Sadly, I think the answer is you need different tops. For ages, its been "tight bottom half, looser top half" dressing, and those slightly baggy tops dont look as nice with wider bottom half clothing. In the same way when we started with skinnies, loads of woman found it hard to accept wearing clothes skin tight on the bottom half that showed off every lump and bump, we are now used to it, but aren't used to tight fitting tops.

So new tops, or try them tucked in, or go for a slim leg trouser.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 03/12/2021 14:05

Leather (or faux) joggers with a nice top tucked in. The tops you have that worked with skinnies should work with a slim trouser that's fitted at the waist.

BigWoollyJumpers · 03/12/2021 14:10

I can't honestly say I have not noticed skinny jeans not being "in". Standard uniform round here is still oversize tops/shirts with skinny waist high jeans and knee length boots. Soooo comfortable and covers a multitude of lumps and bumps.

I will, never, ever, give up my skinny jeans.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 03/12/2021 18:12

Just go for something other than jeans.

I’m down at the arse end of the planet, and even here, skinny jeans have well and truly had their day.

Delatron · 03/12/2021 18:34

I committed to the ‘skinny jeans are out’ trend in the summer. So cropped girlfriend jeans with sandals or trainers/ flares with a low wedge. Tighter/shorter tops but no crop tops!!

However in winter it’s too hard. Especially when it’s freezing. I tried last week. I had loose fitting leather look trousers and a top but as it was freezing I had to wear a big fluffy coat and boots and they just didn’t look right and I felt uncomfortable all night.

I reverted back to a skinny (a slightly loss skinny) and boots last night with a vest top and slouchy lovely cashmere jumper and felt much happier abs I think I looked nicer, if less fashionable.

The fashion is basically baggy jeans and a tight crop top and I can’t make that work!

I love a jumpsuits for this reason. And I wear leggings in the day as they are acceptable with chunky knits/puffers and boots. I’d look like a teenager in baggy jeans and a puffer. Plus I like my legs (and not my tummy!!)

oobedobe · 03/12/2021 23:33

My take on it is that skinny jeans are out as the default jean that we all live in for day or night, but still ok as an occasional variation.

I like wearing my skinny jeans with a more up to date chunky mid height chelsea boot, it shows of the boots more than under mom/boyfriend styles and makes the skinny jeans more current.

I pretty much phased out wearing them during the day but think they are ok for the odd night out.

AmberLynn1536 · 03/12/2021 23:54

Absolutely this! I think there are threads going back to 2012 on here saying skinnies are out, I have yet to see evidence of this in the shops.
