First ‘real perfume’ for a 16yo

My soon-to-be 16yo wants perfume for the first time. Not a body spray or similar, more an way de toilette, branded type thing.

Her brother is buying it for her for Christmas and has a budget of £20-£25.

I have used the same two perfumes forever so can of limited use and he’s at the sub-Lynx level of sophistication, bless him.

What would you gurus suggest?

Amor amor

Blahblahblahyadayadayada · 30/11/2021 20:10

Aww that’s lovely that he is buying for her. Body Shop has some Eau de Toilette but maybe not branded enough. Is Calvin Klein perfume still popular amongst younger people?

ilovecardigans · 30/11/2021 20:18

Tommy Girl by Tommy Hilfiger is a gorgeous, youthful, fresh fragrance and well within budget (£13 for 30 ml or £20 for 200 ml at Argos).

Don't let the bargain price put you off, this was created by Calice Becker and received a coveted 5 star review in the legendary 'Perfumes - The Guide' by Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez.

I would suggest taking her to smell and test. Perfume is such a personal thing it would be better to let her choose.

What about a taster set from somewhere like 4160 tuesdays?
£25

user0176 · 30/11/2021 20:21

Tommy Girl was my first perfume as a teenager, I remember it fondly!

atleastitswarm · 30/11/2021 20:21

Zara perfumes smell amazing, are very popular with my older teen relatives and are great value.

FlickerBeat · 30/11/2021 20:22

Vera Wang Princess is lovely! I actually have a bottle of my own.

Juts bought this for DD11 first perfume and it's very pretty

Another vote for amor amor - BUT - whatever you go for, get on all beauty or fragrance direct to make sure you get a good deal for the money you have to spend :) going and and smelling some is a good idea - but I always go online as you get some crazy good deals on those two sites without risking fakes!

Turtletaub · 30/11/2021 20:25

I also loved 'Ralph' at that age and you can get that on great deals too

MrsFoxyplease · 30/11/2021 20:25

Any of the Ghost fragrances.
My favourite is the original one in the pale blue bottle.

dollybird · 30/11/2021 20:26

Daisy by Marc Jacobs was my DD's first perfume, although she mostly uses Victoria's Secret body sprays now (18)

foxgoosefinch · 30/11/2021 20:28

Marc Jacobs, Daisy, is a nice one for teen girls, but it’s quite expensive I think. Is Ghost fashionable amongst teenagers these days?

One option might be to see if there is a fragrance by a clothes brand or store she likes.

I feel very out of date - as a teenager I had Sunflowers and Aramis New West, and then Issey Miyake and Kenzo as a student. But I don’t know at all what teens like now, apart from my niece who likes Daisy!

MaddieElla · 30/11/2021 20:31

Younger girls like the Ariana Grande perfumes.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 30/11/2021 20:33

Agree that it's very personal. One of my teens likes Cloud by Ariana Grande - too sweet for me but it's a cute bottle - and the other likes Lime and Bergamot which is much cleaner, more unisex but a more boring bottle so not on display on the dressing table!

Agirlcalledeaster · 30/11/2021 20:33

Arianna Grande cloud

SticksOutLikeDogsBalls · 30/11/2021 20:52

Another vote for Daisy. It was my daughter's first real perfume.
It is really beautiful, however like others have said, perfume is a very personal thing.

Totalwasteofpaper · 30/11/2021 20:55

Awwwww cute!!!
This is such a nice thing to do...

I would take her to a department store to try a smell a few and see what she likes and maybe get a nice afternoon tea or something after.
Let her find a couple and think about it so she gets one she REALLY likes

Jota67 · 30/11/2021 21:02

Ariana Grande is very popular.

Zara and Next both also have a nice range of perfumes.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/11/2021 21:06

My DD likes Stella by Stella McCartney and has asked for this the last few years .

I bought her a small bottle of Molecule 1 (the one only some people can smell so its either amazing or zilch)

JustPickleRick · 30/11/2021 21:16

Vera Wang Princess was on offer on Amazon the it her day, down to £16.99 from about £45. Its one of my favourites as its nice and sweet.

Suprima · 30/11/2021 21:17

Flash by Jimmy Choo is lovely and young smelling. It’s about £22 on Amazon at the moment.

Goawayquickly · 30/11/2021 21:24

Some of the Ghost perfumes are lovely and often on offer in boots. Boots also always have a discounted fragrance section and I've had some lovely perfumes at the £20 mark- well known brands that your d might be interested in. Like DK or Kors for example

AngeloMysterioso · 30/11/2021 21:31

I loved Lacoste Touch of Pink at that age. Nice youthful pretty scent.
