I just can't stand anything in any shop

I decided to spend some money, haven't shopped for new clothes for a few years (apart from the occasional replacement), so luckily i have the choice and the cash to pick and choose at the moment.

But it is dire out there. I just don't get it. Physical stores are a clusterfuck of thin, creased shite (H&M, Next, etc) with 'knitwear' that looks like it is made out of some shabby, crushed up webbing - i am presuming it is the sheer amount of elastane mixed in with poor quality acrylic and stretched up polyester.....they look and feel allergy inducing. Who is buying this shit and why?

But the real issue is higher end stores - Brora, White Co, Toast, and so on - i used to like these and purchase from them but now it seems everything is overly trend focused and either whoppingly huge or cropped to oblivion (no proper basics to speak of, just odd shapes and stuff that will date very, very quickly at £200 a pop!)
And don't get me started on sleeve length. Unless the arm is described as cropped then even long limbed models have cuffs trailing a foot longer than their hands! (yes Cos i am looking at you!)

I just wanted a loose fit, luxurious cashmere jumper or cardi that was fluid over the hips, not with a standard fitted hem. I think the shapes of a hem really help to update a garment but the 'quality' shops are still only selling stolid shapes that are a bit office-wear 2003.

So here i am with the money and freedom to choose but.. nothing! I cant find one damn store apart from Poetry that has interestingly created knits, and they never have what i want in stock for months ahead. It is depressing. I needed a handful of new jumpers and a couple of skirts/tops. Haven't managed to find a single one that isnt badly made, ludicrously long or insanely patterned (cottage core can step the fuck back a bit ok)....

The entire market is flooded with overly trend focused crap. No brand is safe from it, i cant even just find a simple cardi in a good wool that drapes well and ISN'T 4 feet wide.

Thanks everyone, found some lovely new places here, not that i can afford many of them, but makes a change from the usual giants.

@highlandcoo

Slightly off the point OP but I love the two photos you posted above. This was very much my style when I was a student in the early 80s and it's still my favourite look.

During lockdown I have started knitting again and recently dressmaking classes too, inspired by watching Sewing Bee. I'm planning to make some of my own clothes and have started searching for small independent wool and cloth producers. Not a cheap solution at all but I'm hoping to end up with some high quality clothes that I love.

I wish i could knit or sew. I tried often in childhood and adulthood but it's never going to happen. My aunt who can do both often said to me 'anyone can do it if they want to!' and i think, yeh it's like suggesting to someone who can't paint to copy a Rembrandt!

I can paint but i cant knit :(

I think one of the images is from Nygaardsana (sp?), love their stuff but it is very expensive and not easy to get hold of in the UK outlets as most sizes sell out.
I also like Cabbages and Roses but most of their items are insanely voluminous and long, and a bit too chintzy-period-drama for my tastes. The darker elements of their aesthetic really appeal to me though. Lovely wools and tartan skirts.

@WeirdArchitecture

John Smedley very nice, thanks.

Woodhill, do you mean Pure Collection?

Yes Pure Collection , in John Lewis
WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 19:02

I love the Pure cropped cashmere, would go well with my stuff. Nothing exciting but very practical! Not all colours on JL but available on their website.

If you want good quality items, have a look at Thought. The things I have got from them are head and shoulders above most other stuff I have from the high street.

Handsnotwands · 26/11/2021 19:11

I’ve bought some men’s jumpers recently. Better all round and cheaper. I’m not a man shape, I’ve got huge boobs but still better on me than the women’s offering

JaceLancs · 26/11/2021 19:56

Second woolovers - classic and still ok quality wise
I’ve just ordered 2 dressing gowns £85 each or 2 for £89 - giving the second one to DD!

woodhill · 26/11/2021 20:00

Woolovers don't seem to single sizes though which puts me off, I'm not an 8-10 or 12-14, more in between itms

Loved the tree decorations thought

Prismatic · 26/11/2021 22:26

I have the Harris Tweed coat you posted the picture of OP.. I love it too. I know you said you're good for coats... but its from last season so likely to go into their sale quite soonWink

Thatsplentyjack · 26/11/2021 22:51

Yes! I tried on a jumper in H&M yesterday which I can only assume was made for an orangutan. The flared sleeves were around 2 inches passed my fingers and the body barely covered my belly button.

www.jumper1234.com/aw21-cashmere

Jumper 1234 does a load of cashmere in fairly "normal" shapes

I also rate John Smedley and you can occasionally get it in tk Maxx.

I'd also recommend sniffing out any high quality second hand boutiques.

Journeynotdestination · 27/11/2021 12:56

I’m gaining exactly the same problem. My go-to is Vinted or eBay for 2nd hand stuff. I sometimes have money to buy new things but the quality is dire. I can’t understand who buys all the plastic stuff from H&M etc, it doesn’t even feel nice to the touch. I did buy some good wide leg cotton corduroy trousers from H&M recently for £19.99 and they look a lot more expensive. The cashmere online from them is pretty good. With 20% at the moment off it’s well priced. But gone are the days we could get nice fabrics on the high st. I wanted a linen slub top from Jigsaw in the summer but it was £80! It’s insane. Who can afford that for essentially a linen t-shirt with buttons!!

WeirdArchitecture · 27/11/2021 13:54

Must check Vinted out - i can only find skirts i like on ebay now. Decent wool or silk for much, much less than a polyester skirt in the high street. So long as they arent bobbled or smelly, it's a great thing!

Is Vinted easy to use?

I was fine with H&M until a year or two ago. Quality seemed to take a plunge yet the prices rise up. Used to get decent cotton fine knit jumpers there but now they're all huge and spongey.

Agree ebay would be a good bet. Maybe try some of the too expensive brands that PP have suggested.

I got a beautiful tartan Boden skirt from ebay recently. From back when Boden was good quality. I've struggled to find anything I like on the highstreet.

I have also found that men's knitwear is better quality and much better shaped so I always look there too.

Sexnotgender · 27/11/2021 17:03

Vinted is super easy to use.

I buy men’s jumpers, I’m also not a man shape but I find them better quality. I’m a 12 on top and buy a small in men’s.

I understand OP. I was kindly given an Anthropologie gift card and I CANNOT find anything to spend it on. Admittedly it’s not a place I shop much and I know it’s not for everyone but I have regularly trawled the entire site over the last 3 months and found NOTHING not even a top I would enjoy spending it on.

Today I have given up and bought some Sweaty Betty leggings on the Anthropologie site, they will at least be very useful snd every other item I have seen is loathsome. WHY IS EVERYTHING CUT-OUT????
