I just can't stand anything in any shop

I decided to spend some money, haven't shopped for new clothes for a few years (apart from the occasional replacement), so luckily i have the choice and the cash to pick and choose at the moment.

But it is dire out there. I just don't get it. Physical stores are a clusterfuck of thin, creased shite (H&M, Next, etc) with 'knitwear' that looks like it is made out of some shabby, crushed up webbing - i am presuming it is the sheer amount of elastane mixed in with poor quality acrylic and stretched up polyester.....they look and feel allergy inducing. Who is buying this shit and why?

But the real issue is higher end stores - Brora, White Co, Toast, and so on - i used to like these and purchase from them but now it seems everything is overly trend focused and either whoppingly huge or cropped to oblivion (no proper basics to speak of, just odd shapes and stuff that will date very, very quickly at £200 a pop!)
And don't get me started on sleeve length. Unless the arm is described as cropped then even long limbed models have cuffs trailing a foot longer than their hands! (yes Cos i am looking at you!)

I just wanted a loose fit, luxurious cashmere jumper or cardi that was fluid over the hips, not with a standard fitted hem. I think the shapes of a hem really help to update a garment but the 'quality' shops are still only selling stolid shapes that are a bit office-wear 2003.

So here i am with the money and freedom to choose but.. nothing! I cant find one damn store apart from Poetry that has interestingly created knits, and they never have what i want in stock for months ahead. It is depressing. I needed a handful of new jumpers and a couple of skirts/tops. Haven't managed to find a single one that isnt badly made, ludicrously long or insanely patterned (cottage core can step the fuck back a bit ok)....

The entire market is flooded with overly trend focused crap. No brand is safe from it, i cant even just find a simple cardi in a good wool that drapes well and ISN'T 4 feet wide.

Another vote for sweaters from NavyGrey .
Really fabulous range . Do look at website. I am delighted with my purchases ( and don’t work for them, bought everything) !

shinynewapple21 · 26/11/2021 14:21

I have ordered a jumper from Celtic & Co. made in UK. Things I have had from there in the past have been good quality. They can be guilty of too long sleeves though .

Marimaur · 26/11/2021 14:22

American Vintage does a lot of knitwear, classic shapes as well as trend.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 14:22

Another grumble (let me go for it, i need a moan!)

Bloody celtic and co.
Why are most of the garments in the product photo's creased to hell? Most look oddly fitting and dont tempt me to purchase. I hear they are great quality, but all of their hems or sleeves look downright bizarre.

I like a bit of slouch, but crikey.

I am sorry OP, I am no help, but I just wanted to let you know I hear your every word to the very core of my being

Me too. The shops are full of nasty rubbish at the moment - horrible fabric, and I don't think I've ever seen such unattractive styles. And I'm desperate for new jeans-type trousers, which I find hard enough at the best of times ... but just now, 90% of trousers are high waisted. I had a big, serious trawl-for-trousers yesterday - not a thing out there.

True, and why does everyone presume if you dont want a waistband nudging your boobs then you MUST like super low rise whale-tail jeans?

There is very little moderation in anything now. A decent mid waist is impossible to find. But then i dont wear jeans. But if i did i wouldnt do high waist as i have a short torso.

I love Celtic & co: www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/knitwear

If you can “buy once/buy well” in the seasons where clothes are to your taste or what you consider to be ‘classic’, then that’s when you need to shop. Make the most of the good years!

TollgateDebs · 26/11/2021 14:28

I expect my clothing to perform, whatever the price and have high and low end items that are brilliant but lately have also struggled to find anything of quality. I have a few items from Uniqlo (all bought on line and have never managed to find anything in store), which tend to be their fleece but I would recommend their men's UT t-shirts which are excellent quality but I've had some shockers too - something to look at is the sizing per item, as it really varies and this is where the reviews really come in to their own. Boden, I've just ordered 4 items and all have gone back and one fell apart in the box and they are nothing like the Boden of a few year's back, much of which I am still wearing! Mango - a couple of very good tops recently, fairly classic in style and wash very well but, just this week, I've returned a suit - where it was folded in the box the material was fluffing up, so not something I had any faith would wear well. Popped into our local town yesterday and agree that the offerings were very poor.

HiGunny · 26/11/2021 14:34

M&S have a slouchy cashmere v-neck. I like it as it's more casual and less officey than the regular one. I got it in raspberry pink and love the colour.

Frankzappa22 · 26/11/2021 14:34

Go to Whistles. Joseph if you want really toasty warm cashmere but it’s much more expensive

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 14:34

John Smedley knitwear is very good

I just hang on to jeans I like. Usually mid-rise straight dark ones

woodhill · 26/11/2021 14:45

I went to Oxford Street recently and I wasn't keen on anything in M&S. HOF or JL

The Linea make used to be reasonable

Yes, it seems this particular year has failed me - i had the available money and time to do it, i will probably get a few decent basics and hold fast until something good arrives, hopefully next year (i am suitably sorted for summer clothes and we dont even seem to get mid-seasons anymore :( )

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 14:51

I did get a long puffer coat from COS this year for practical reasons, and a wonderful 'new without tags' long tweed coat from ebay (the coat was 'house of bruar' so i saved over £180!)

So im ok for coats. Everythng else is a mess really.
I used to live somewhere very rural and wet, and my old winter togs dont match my lifestyle now. I have very few clothes to begin with.

That white co jumper comes in dark purple, black and a dusky pink.

Pele like me buy that H&M 'shit' you speak of... Because I have got £550 a month to live off before bills are deducted for my daughter and I. I'm currently wearing clothes 2 sizes too big because I can't afford to buy new clothes. Sorry to disappoint you when I buy this 'shit' 🙄
DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 26/11/2021 15:15

Can shops also stop aggregating every brand under the sun online? Even M&S are at it now. Impossible to search and browse online because searching for navy knitwear gives 1000+ results from brand I don’t care about.

I rate Uniqlo but not Woolovers.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 15:34

MissNothing1991

But it doesn't discredit anyone's budget to recognise that we are being sold crap.
In fact, i would resent the cheaply made offerings far more the lower my budget was. Why should your hard earned money be spent on drastically reduced quality that we didnt have pushed on us 20 yrs ago?

I am not well off, but even when i was a struggling student i could find decent fabrics at topshop, dorothy perkins, etc. But not now. The issue is the race to the bottom/shareholders, not us.

Brands selling trend driven polyester rubbish is not a reflection on you or anyone else. I did state in my OP that i had the privilege of purchasing at higher end high street once or twice a year.

Im sorry if it came over as ignorant, it was certainly not intended Flowers

I have noticed this, i get dizzy if i meet one of those endless scroll things after searching fro a simple top. (4000 results wft?)

Some websites dont even allow you to filter for specific searches. Poetry is the worst for that. Sometimes it is like a giant fuck-you form brands.

And those ridiculous 'let's find your size' apps. Absolute bollocks. I cant recall one ever judging me suitably and every website uses the same, crappy, ambiguous format.

Try Me&Em. I often find nicely cut, well made bits there.

WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 16:05

Me & Em, I like dresses and skirts and am seeing a lot of 100% polyester for nearly £200. Even if they are good quality, i just cant process why it would cost that much to make it.

All dresses and skirts called 'midi' are so long i would have to have them altered, too. I wish stores would quit masquerading maxi's as midi's. I'm not even petite so god knows where anyone under 5'5 are getting theirs from.

OP posts:
WeirdArchitecture · 26/11/2021 16:06

I mean, i could get a pure silk or wool one from Brora for that.

It really is silly money. Lovely designs though.
