For those people with grey hair

I am grey. It is a nice colour. Its silver and I feel blessed. It is in great condition too.

However.... when I was a brunette I had highlights from time to time and they ranged from blonde to red, to both.

Blondes do it too don't they ? Highlights and lowlights etc etc...

So for us with Grey, what can you do if you want to liven the colour up for holidays or Christmas?

I am not talking about blue or pink. Can anyone relate and if so give advice

Thanks

I've thought about adding colour to my grey, but I worry that it will stain my hair and it will need growing out again. I'm not risking the pain again!

madisonbridges · 25/11/2021 00:58

I think some people with grey hair have blonde highlights put in to give it depth and texture

Anordinarymum · 25/11/2021 01:06

I never thought about blonde. I'll ask my hairdresser. I would not attempt it myself. My hair is too precious now. It took two years to grow the old colour out.

Maybe you could just have a toner put on for Christmas that will gradually wash out? You could get one from Sally's if you wanted to do it yourself. But 100% yes to consulting your hairdresser first.

I don't want to do anything that will gradually fade. I want instant glamour !

I asked my daughter if there was such a thing as a spray that had glitter in and she gave me a look that was withering :)

I'm not quite there yet (still in the horror tabby cat transition years!) but a friend gets lovely creamy/pearl highlights in her grey hair.

I know you're not really into colour but I've seen the faintest of lilac work really well with silver, too.

madisonbridges · 25/11/2021 01:40

Oops, I have that spray! I love a bit of glitter. 🤭

The toner will make a big impact and look really good for three maybe four weeks and then will start to fade in the New Year...like we all will. 😉 It just won't damage your hair or need growing out.
But I'm sure your hairdresser will have some great suggestions. 👍

Bortles · 25/11/2021 01:42

Pretty sure you can get different tones of grey and silver highlights.

I think I will look into the highlights. I will not buy a can of spray. I will not. Repeat hourly :)

If you have grey hair you need to put colour in (as opposed to taking colour out, which bleaching does). I wouldn't recommend a box colour as they look ghastly and flat. Hairdresser will run 2 or three colours through and that will last you 6 months or more if done well.

I would never ever put another box colour on my hair after many years of doing so.

My hair is wonderful. The grey is gorgeous. I just want to give it some ooomph for Christmas :)

Trouble is it’s hard to find a hairdresser who knows about or likes to deal with grey hair.
It’s a new trend for people to want to have grey hair at a younger age and in my experience hairdressers don’t like it!

I can see that they are irritated by losing the regular root touch up appointments and the foil and bayalage things. I hope they get creative and dream up some nice treatments for those of us who have discovered our natural colour due to lockdown.

One hairdresser I went to was openly angry about it and said, no I don’t like it, it ages you by 10 years😂

Acrackineverything · 25/11/2021 07:18

No suggestions OP but watching with interest! Every so often I trawl the aisles in Boots to see if they have any such thing. A hairdresser did suggest a toner to me but at the time I was all about keeping it natural. Now I wouldn't mind something something subtle but glamorous.

cookiemonster2468 · 25/11/2021 07:33

I think the photo above of the different tones of grey looks amazing. I'd be tempted to do something like that.

So true. I used to put a toner through my hair but months later I am still trying to get rid of the blueypurple tint. It will just not go. My hair started out well but seems a little murky now with bits of pale brown? No idea where that has come from. Would love something to add to it that makes the silver gleam.
Anordinarymum · 25/11/2021 14:05

Yes, that's it ! I want to make the silver gleam !

blue/ purple look fab but do stain your hair.

@neveradullmoment99 are you using one of the toning shampoos - they can help lift a dull colour - Schwazkopf silver would be my go to if you are grey.

I'm currently natural as an experiment and should have shifted to a different toning shampoo according to my hairdresser - she recommended Redken but I'm still using up my salon size silver one!!

MauveMavis · 25/11/2021 14:12

If any of you are in London my sylist is very pro silver hair. She has a huge client base who dye silver and an increasing number like me who are naturally so (or enhanced naturally so!)

PM me if you want details.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/11/2021 14:13

Use this for a few washes, it’s very subtle (not coloured as such but gives a lovely tone) www.superdrug.com/Hair/Shampoo/Bleach-London-Pearlescent-Shampoo-250Ml/p/808424?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIn7qwgNmz9AIVl-3tCh3v4gdgEAQYASABEgIlbPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I got bored during the first lockdown...

For those people with grey hair
Cinabunn · 25/11/2021 14:20

I asked about this when getting my hair cut.

Colourist suggested lots of subtle (not stripey)highlights with different shades of blonde, or silver and white depending on whether I wanted cool or warm.

I haven't done it yet as I'm enjoying the low maintenance of grey hair but I used to change colour quite a lot so I am missing playing around with it...

Classica · 25/11/2021 14:23

If you want something that gives you instant glitz but you're wary of actual dye why don't you get some clip in extensions?

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/11/2021 14:28

Have you tried using a purple shampoo and conditioner? My naturally black, grey and white hair looks less dull when I use them.

Anordinarymum · 25/11/2021 14:34
