What coat to go with long dresses - winter

What coat do you wear with long dresses this winter?! I've finally pulled myself out of my comfy slacks and bought some nice dresses for socialising this winter. I'm going to get black Chelsea boots I think. What coat goes with these dresses? I don't want to dress them up- it's for meeting mates for coffee etc. TIA

If possible, one for casual and one for smart.

I have a long wool coat that covers my hems.

I also need a long black puffer to mid calf, i dont mind if skirts peep out a bit, that looks fine to me (remember, nobody seems to mind heaps of trouser or denim fabric beneath their coat hems - so why not dresses?)

I also have a short barbour quilted jacket (fitted) and would love a velvet slim fit blazer.

Wool blazer and a cashmere scarf.

I bought fab ankle length black max from cos as I live in long dresses and this works really well.. second blazer idea .. got a great long line one from whistles

I think if you don't want to smarten them up then I'd go really quite casual, e.g. a short parka type thing. But not sure how on trend that would be - and, actually, I just wanted to comment to say that you look so good in those dresses, especially the green one! You've got a lovely figure.

For not too cold weather, would a short fitted leather jacket work?

No advice I find so hard to match a coat with a long dress other then a biker jacket.

But honestly the dresses look so nice!

I struggle with this too, as I like to wear my longer dresses with my leather biker but prefer not to freeze. All my other coats look wrong with them, really-very frumpy with the long hemline.

Actually I do have the short quilted Barbour jacket too. That could work.

Can't afford a wool coat though they do look gorgeous.

I've got a biker type leather jacket for the warmer weather.

I love a tan coat but I wonder if I'd find the black better as I think black would go with these dresses better. And yes to a elated coat. I can't pull frumpy and shapeless off at all so a belted coat is perfect! Thanks all

I have a few for over similar dresses.
A black leather biker worn with a black scarf for when it's not too cold.
A short mink colour faux fur jacket (my Gran's from the 50's/60's)
A long oversized leopard print coat.
A long grey oversized maxi coat
A long brown fitted herringbone belted coat. Starting to think I may have a coat problem! 😄

Either a short teddy / faux fur or a full length oversized coat. Absolutely no parka / puffer or mod length coat.

Also an aviator jacket works well as an alternative to a biker
