What coat to go with long dresses - winter

What coat do you wear with long dresses this winter?! I've finally pulled myself out of my comfy slacks and bought some nice dresses for socialising this winter. I'm going to get black Chelsea boots I think. What coat goes with these dresses? I don't want to dress them up- it's for meeting mates for coffee etc. TIA

That khaki military style coat is gorgeous!!

Like the sound of an aviator. They'd go with boots. And noted I need short or long, not in between

Absolutely no short jacket will keep you warm in colder weather, especially when there is wind chill.

I think dressing appropriately for the weather enables you to look and feel more polished, relaxed and comfortable.

One longer, warmer coat is ideal for winter. On milder days, go for the jackets or whatever, but it is a bit tragic avoiding warmth for what would appear to be fairly ambiguous (and often very dated) style rules that are often espoused on here.

There is nothing unusual or silly about a long padded coat for colder days. I would call it a wardrobe essential. And they wont look any different worn with a dress beneath or trousers to be honest.

btw i am referring to the ubiquitous biker suggestions and MN's terror of breaking non existent style 'rules'.

Might go on the Christmas list!! 😄

I totally agree that feeling confident and comfortable is half the battle with fashion

I love the colour of the khaki one and like the fitted style and length of the black, not so keen on the trim though (not much help, sorry!)

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 22/11/2021 12:52

I love that black coat Op, it would look great with the dresses!

I've got a couple of long coats I wear a smart Ted Baker one and a multi coloured casual one

goose1964 · 22/11/2021 14:29

I have a fake ponyskin bomber jacket, it works well because it ends up at the waist, or what would be the waist if mine wasn't just under my armpit.

Divebar2021 · 22/11/2021 15:44

I like the shorter teddy / faux fur options. I think the longer wool options need to be cocoon or oversized fit to look modern. The fitted military cut of that black one above is pretty dressy if the aim is to look casual. An oversized shape would also allow you to wear a fitted jacket like a leather / denim one underneath. I’d look for a preloved coat on eBay / Depop. I’ve had a couple of great ones for about £15 /£20

Lovinglife45 · 22/11/2021 16:01

I have the same issue OP. It is too cold to wear mult biker jacket and my midi coats look frumpy with longer length dress. A slight hem of a dress showing is fine but any more and it looks wrong to me.

I may need to buy a second hand dress as recommended by divabar.
