Why is everything so long?

Spiceup · 19/11/2021 08:59

I'm 5'7" so not short and for most of my life, if anything, my issue was finding trousers that weren't too short.

Over the last few years though everything is too long. I ordered this jumpsuit, which is lovely on, but even with heels a good 4 inches too long. Who exactly is it made for? It has pleats in the legs so even though I can make simple alterations I don't think this can be shortened

I am 5'4 and feel the same.
Been looking at a few 'midi' dresses recently, at Barbour, Brora, Poetry, White Co.......all of them would reach my shoes. To my mind that is maxi, not midi length.

Petite is supposed to be 5'3 and below, so no idea why a midi, even at M&S is over 87 cm long.

Heels aren't in fashion so much right now, so we are expected to have everything altered, and god help you if the damn thing is tiered. It was not so bad until recently, i have been purchasing midi skirts and dresses for years now and have only recently noticed they are getting longer.

It is great for taller people who might struggle, but anyone under 5'8 is stuffed at the mo!

BlackSwan · 19/11/2021 14:00

Either too long or too short. Agreed.
Had a dress arrive today which is so long it makes me look like a member of a cult.
My alterations guy is doing a roaring trade.

chipsandgin · 19/11/2021 14:41

It’s the opposite for me at 6’, everything is too short, all dress waistlines 5” above my waist (& all dresses seem to have them at the moment, which is annoying!), sleeves too short on jumpers, hoodies & tops & blouses, all trousers & jeans too short. I can’t buy anything in an actual shop as no high street stores carry their tall ranges in store.

Also clothing brands that I love the look of (like & other stories, Baukjen, Anthropology, All Saints..) don’t do longer length anything & H&M, who used to do their jeans with a 34” leg option now only do one length.

Basically I’d love to know which shops are doing everything ‘long’, it would be a real treat to go to a shop and buy/try on clothes in store!

Mercurial123 · 19/11/2021 15:15

I'm 5' 9" I've never found clothes are too long.

M&S offer long versions of many skirts. Not sure about trousers though. Most of their 'midaxi' range are really quite long, too long for me.

Lovely silk skirts and dresses at Brora, I would have to take 6 inches off them myself. Dresses roughly 120+cm in length.

Toast : Most dresses and skirts would trail the floor for me at 5'4. Really fantastic options for taller ladies.

Poetry, most reviews for all items describe products as too long.

Depends what you are after, and i dont wear jeans so cant comment, but i do miss trying on in store too. Not much left in them in these parts.

I think the magical height must be around 5'8 Grin

off the rack fashion is a pain in the arse isnt it?

goose1964 · 19/11/2021 15:20

Primark do long trousers, as do Peacocks neither are supposed to be long but they're long on me and I have 32" and a bit legs. . I made the mistake of buying some long trousers from M&S a few months ago. Until then they had always been great but I can't wear them unless it's with my chunky trainers.

LookdeepintotheParka · 19/11/2021 18:50

I'm 5'3 and everything is too long on me but recently I've even noticed a problem with short length and petite ranges! Tried short length and petite trousers which have been way too long for me in M&S and Next. I don't know what they are basing their measurements on?!

Sleeves are the other issue! Tops from shops like Fat Face are impossible as they always have sleeves that are miles too long. You can generally turn sleeves up without too much problem but 2 or 3 times just looks silly!!

If only! I’m also 5ft 9. I’ve pretty much given up hope and just stick to jeans these days.
OatALot · 19/11/2021 21:08

I'm under 5 foot and nothing fits anymore. And everything is so baggy too. Feel like I am sized out of the market.

LosingItInLockdown · 20/11/2021 07:16

Yes! I’m 5 foot 6 but with short legs. All the M&S and Next jeans I’ve bought lately have been ridiculously long Sad.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 20/11/2021 07:29

I’m 5ft4 and over the past 18 months or so, normal ranges now swamp me. It seems to be happening to everything!

nordica · 20/11/2021 07:54

5ft3 here and everything is always too short or too long! I prefer skirts and dresses that just show my knees when I sit down and that's almost impossible to find now. Everything is either trailing my shoes or so short it looks like I forgot to wear a skirt.

Actually these days finding I'm in between sizes in most things for some reason so maybe I'm a strange height and shape. 🙃

Fizbosshoes · 20/11/2021 08:18

Same here. And Next vanity sizing is ridiculous. I am not skinny by any stretch of the imagination (and straight up and down so no tiny waist) but a next size 6 is too big.

IvorCutler · 20/11/2021 14:46

I’m 5’8” and don’t find things too long… I don’t have especially long legs either. I find most of the trousers I buy are slightly cropped, which is how I like them.

LeicesterIntheMorning · 20/11/2021 16:35

I am 5.1" and I feel clothes for me don't even exist anymore.
And manufacturers, petite means small all over, so trousers don't just need to be shorter in the leg, they still need to be in proportion; I don't want them reaching my armpits!!

habibihabibi · 20/11/2021 17:21

Retailers seem to be concentrating more on the roly poly rather than lamposts and dwarves.

I am grazing 6ft and finding 36 /38 nside leg is near on impossible but 5 years ago, you could in gap and zara

I am not the tallest person on the planet but have perpetually cold ankles and the waists of dresses are often armpit level.

bjjgirl · 20/11/2021 20:49

I'm 5ft 6 1/2 and mostly legs, everything is usually short! Does my head in

Roly poly? Biscuit
everyonebutme · 21/11/2021 06:37

5ft here and everything is too long. I hardly ever buy clothes as I find nothing to fit me or look good on me. There really is a market out there for us not so tall ladies. (This is the second recent thread on this subject recently).

RobinPenguins · 21/11/2021 06:41

I’m 5’9” and practically everything is too short - not so much trousers but dresses and tops definitely are. I wouldn’t even attempt a jumpsuit unless from a specific talk range as they’re always too short in the body. The waistband on dresses is never in the right place and most tops are much shorter than they should be, I’m not sure how since the models they’re pictured on are usually around my height. Everything seems cut for short bodies with long legs.

RobinPenguins · 21/11/2021 06:43

But things probably are generally longer than they used to be because people are taller than they used to be. And almost brands have a petite range but not many have a tall range so this is likely to skew things a bit longer too I suppose.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/11/2021 12:07

I think as shorties we've been spoilt recently with sinny jeans and cigarette trousers being able to be worn on short people without altering, but now the fashion is back for wide leg/bootleg etc. the style is longer.
I think OP's complaint makes sense, but I don't really understand the 6ft tool person or the under 5ft person complaining. You are both at extreme ends of height so it's be expected that standard sized things will not fit you.

IamGusFring · 21/11/2021 12:20

Tried a Ted Baker coat recently - it came to the ground . I am 5 foot 3 though .

LookdeepintotheParka · 21/11/2021 12:35

The average female height in the UK is now 5'4 so what I don't understand is why at 5'3, some of the short/petite ranges are suddenly too long for me Hmm

Females are growing taller but not that quickly (either that or I'm now shrinking so that doesn't bode well Grin)
