Any shampoo bars that my that lather up well?

Hi everyone, as a family we are trying to do some better for the environment choices. We certainly are no where near great atm.

Anyway some successes have been been replacing plastic diet pop bottles and cans with a soda stream, switching from laundry liquid to paper thingies (technical term!) Etc.

Anyway area I'm trying next are shampoo bars to reduce single use plastic. However the two I tried barely lathered up even with lots of effort and I ended up wasting so much water and time to get enough to clean hair. And no not going to stand there shivering turning it on and off in short bursts! So does anyone have any good lathering shampoo bars they could recommend? Thank you in advance 💞

Yes, I had the same issues. A lot of the shampoo bars are marketed as natural and not containing SLS sodium laureth sulphate or something, and that's what makes it lather.

I get my shampoo bars from Gruum and they are great - very lathery too. No plastic, the bars come in little cardboard boxes. I'm not a fan of their conditioner though. One top tip - make sure you keep your shampoo bar out of the shower and on a wooden tray or something to let it dry out between uses, if you leave it in the shower it gets squidgy and disintegrates.

Gruum are really good- best I’ve tried so far. Google free gruum shampoo and you can get an offer of just paying postage for the first one.

The volumising conditioner bar is good but I’m struggling to get the amount right. Too much and my hair is awful, but the right amount and it’s really shiny!

Soul and soul lather up well.

Also Alberto balsam - found it in a big asda, v impressed.

Not found the ones from my little eco shop to be very good - lathered eventually but hard work, and disintegrated into little bits after a few uses

The John Frieda volume one lathers very well, I find. Boots sell it.

Had a Faith in Nature one which was OK lathering wise, but the scent was dreadful and really put me off.

I liked the Gruum one, but also Morrison’s own brand (nutmeg) was pretty good and for a very lathery wash, XHC bar is amazing. They do bottled shampoo too (I believe the banana is popular) but I got the bar in B&M for £1. It bubbles, washes beautifully, alleges to be vegan etc…

I've got a garnier ultimate blends one that lathers well. No idea what it's got in it or not got in it, I only bought it because it was lightweight to take on the plane to go on holiday.

I used to love them and bought their shampoo bars in the days they were still called Cosmetics to Go. But their woke-ness and some of their campaigns really put me off in recent years. Gruum are just as good, and cheaper. About £5 and hte Lush ones are more like £8 or £9.

Lush one I had did not lather well and like every other one I've tried (not that many) therefore made my head itch to the degree that I wanted to scratch my scalp off. I'm going to explore gruum based on this thread.

Gruum strips my hair dye. It's a shame because it's a lovely shampoo making my hair shiny and easy to manage, but grey...

Lush ones are the best I’ve tried. The Garnier one does lather up too.

Wow! I didn't expect so many responses everyone! I'll purchase a selection of the above and see which works best for us, I suspect we'll need two types as I have fine, oil prone hair thats coloured and the rest of the family have thicker normal hair not dyed.

Looked for the Alberto Balsam ones in my local Asda today - no joy. But they did have these in their reduced section, £1.99 instead of £4.49. Worth a try at that price!!

Lush Montalbano lathers a lot - I use it as a deep clean shampoo. Smells nice too (citrus-y).

I can't get on with gruum or my little eco shop ones - they make my hair feel greasy and sticky.

I love the soul and soap ones.

I've gone from having thick frizzy hair that needed washing and loads of conditioner every 2 days max sometimes every day to using a s&s bar with no conditioner every 2-3 days and my hair is so much better

We use Soaps for Little Suds soapsforlittlesuds.co.uk/ - various different types of shampoo bar and the ones we have tried are all nice. Think you are going to enjoy yourself trying all sorts of different things here OP

And what result did you expect? If you decide to use shampoo bars to reduce the amount of single-use plastic, you shouldn't be surprised that it barely lathers. Of those organic products I have tried, I have not found a replacement for simple shampoos. Perhaps you can share some cosmetic brands that can change my mind. In addition to Oribe shampoo, I use Silverati TREATMENT MASQUE. I like my hair, but I didn't think taking care of white hair was so difficult. This mask has an amazing effect, making my hair smooth and shiny.
