Compulsory Christmas Jumper Party

DukeofEarlGrey · 09/11/2021 20:42

I have an office Christmas party coming up - new job, nice people, I'm game BUT dress code is compulsory Christmas jumpers and I hate all that nonsense. Can anyone help me find a stylish one that I might actually enjoy wearing? I'm assuming there must be some fun ones that have a bit more going for them than the really garish supermarket stuff. NB I am an hourglass and would rather not be swamped.

Forgive me the vanity here, I have barely been out in 18 months and want to look good when I do. Hence S&B and not elsewhere!

A few years ago I got this from Asos, they don't have this exact jumper anymore, but something apres ski style could be more your cup of tea? www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/292663675766846057/

LillianGish · 09/11/2021 20:50

Why don't your customise something yourself - get a plain v-neck and add some tinsel, pin on a few baubles or add some of those batterie operated lights.

MsDastardley · 09/11/2021 20:54

Have a look at Monsoon, they have some www.monsoon.co.uk/search/?q=Christmas%20jumper. What about a sparkly or sequin jumper, or something in red….

Defiantly41 · 09/11/2021 20:58

How about this? Sleek, sophisticated but a nod to the season I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/mint-velvet-metallic-v-neck-jumper/dark-grey/p5750307?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

I would go fairisle rather than novelty Christmas jumper, looks festive jumper without being naff and you can wear through the winter. You can get jumper dresses with the fair Isle style which with a belt might look fabulous on an hour glass shape.

DukeofEarlGrey · 09/11/2021 21:15

Hmm... some good ideas here, thank you all. I like the fairisle idea and some of the monsoon ones look nice too.

@Defiantly41 that's really nice - exactly the kind of thing i normally go for but then i get accused of not being a real joiner! Grin

I’m a lecturer and tend to do a Christmas jumper thing with students at the end of term. Some do go full on novelty style, mainly the guys, but the majority of the girls wear fairisle or sparkly. I have a lovely cream and red scandi type one from French Connection which is a bit festive but not Santa-hat festive.

I also suggest wearing red, green, or cream if people don’t have anything that would be classed as a Christmas jumper, but that might not work if you do really want to join in!

DukeofEarlGrey · 09/11/2021 21:41

Ah, yeah - am forcing myself to be a joiner as I like my new colleagues and want to be a good sport! On the inside I would like to be wearing this:

@APurpleSquirrel That one is really nice!

Omg I love the Festive AF ones! I'm definitely getting one of those 😅

Comefromaway · 09/11/2021 21:48

I had the same thing last year.

I ended up buying this from Sainsbury’s and actually wore it all over December with a black cord skirt and opaque tights.

Also just seen this one… kitristudio.com/products/elliott-fairisle-sweater

If you want to go the other way from tasteful to show you are a joiner, these are fun.

You get an app for your phone of burning logs and slot it in the jumper so you are wearing a cracking hearth. They are a really good talking point!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 09/11/2021 23:04

Have you thought about a blouse instead?

I bloody hate Christmas jumpers- decent ones are £££ for something you can sensibly wear during two weeks of the year, and cheap ones are always horrible acrylic, sweaty numbers. Plus who on earth wants to wear a jumper when cooking Christmas Dinner or sitting in a well heated pub?

I bought this inspired by my dinosaur loving toddler, but they have a few Santa/ Snowmen etc ones as well.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/11/2021 09:32

No specific suggestions OP but sympathies, I hate things like that and also would find buying a naff jumper I effectively don't want quite wasteful.

I'd try and make it work for me by getting something in a festive colour or fair isle or something I could perhaps attach things to to make it into a as jumper for the night and then remove; after all I doubt anyone really cares so long as it's a nod to the theme.

Seniorandjunior · 10/11/2021 10:44

I second dontgobaconmyheart. You have my sympathies.
I have a Whistles one, similar to the Annie Sparkle one, but it has a written slogan on it, something like 'star'. I trot it out every year. Quality isn't great for the price but it does the job nicely, I've had it for quite a few years, and I don't have the guilt of another unnecessary item of clothing in the dump. And I don't think about a Christmas jumper every year.

RedHot22 · 10/11/2021 10:55

A sparkly or sequinned dress would be ok I’m sure

NadiaVulvokov · 10/11/2021 11:49

A fairisle jumper and get a small Xmas themed soft toy too. Stitch the toy to the shoulder of the jumper or tack on a little pocket in the main colour of the jumper and pop it in there.

Verite1 · 10/11/2021 12:40

I bought a gorgeous black jumper with silver thread in it from Reiss that I used as my “Christmas jumper” in similar circs. Maybe look for something like that? I wouldn’t waste money on a horrible piece of tat that I’m not going to wear again.

mrssmiling · 10/11/2021 13:51

I saw this the other day - very expensive but very lovely.
www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Sparkle-Fair-Isle-Jumper-with-Cashmere-/p/FACSH Would be wearable throughout December, for years!
This might work for the office party? www.johnlewis.com/talking-tables-christmas-light-up-necklace/p3555124
EBay and charity shops might be worth a look - my local Cancer Research shop has a rail of Christmas jumpers - some lovely ones.
