Found the perfect wool dress and can't work out what to wear on my legs!

Hello. I've just bought a lovely wool dress - loose fitting with pockets, just above the knee. It's navy blue but I can't work out what to wear on my legs. Black looks wrong but also don't really want to look quirky at almost fifty! I will be wearing it for work. Thanks!

Hell no to red tights! And no to leggings.

Personally, I'd go black but not too opaque, and black boots.

Just stop shaving or waxing your legs. Grow the hairs to 2 inches long then dye them navy blue and give them a brush down every morning so they look sleek.

I wear navy 70 denier opaques a lot. I also have brown which sometimes works (depending on footwear). I can see grey might work too but I don’t have any.

I often wear navy dresses with thick navy or dark grey tights and knee length brown boots, or navy tights and lighter brown ankle boots.

I posted a while back about what to wear with navy dresses and other people suggested back tights too, but I tried it and didn’t like the combination.

OK - I'll try not to ! I have tried navy and black and it just looks really unflattering. Like I have really thick legs. Maybe that's because I actually have thick legs.

Whatever colour tights you choose make sure your shoes or boots are the same colour, it will make your thick legs look longer. A contrasting shoe will look cut off at the foot so your legs will look both thick and short. Tall women with thin legs can get away with changes of leg / foot colour, those of us of chunkier leg have to learn to do what we can.

I’m over 50 and absolutely unafraid to get my quirk on, so I’d probably advise an interesting toning colour such as plum or bottle green (not even all that quirky, really) or grey is always good, too.

Grey tights work very well with navy. Burgundy is also a good accent colour.

I wear dark grey (anthracite) tights with a similar dress. Woolly tights seem to work best!

I had the same issue. Opaque black tights with ankle boots made my thick legs look like I was wearing knee high boots. I also tried navy blue, purple, bottle green - all drew attention in an unflattering way.

Finally settled on a not very opaque dark grey, it was the best of the options.

I had this dilemma, semi opaque black tights and black boots worked best for me, I found it helped to tie in with something like jet black stud earrings - just a small black accessory on top. Grey tights worked too but for me only with grey loafers. I have navy tights and boots but couldn’t make them work in any combination.

Charcoal grey is always the answer to “I don’t know what colour tights to wear”.
