If you're 5ft5 and 13st12lbs(ish) what size clothes do you wear?

VsgKitt · 06/11/2021 14:47

I had a gastric sleeve 3 months ago and have lost nearly 50lbs.

I haven't bought any new clothes yet as I will continue losing weight for a while but my clothes are very baggy now.

I have no idea what size I am, most shops still don't allow you to use changing rooms so I am going to order some bits online.

I understand everyone's shape is different but just looking for a ball park size to order to try

Thanks

When I was that weight, I was usually a size 16.

MrsTophamHat · 06/11/2021 20:32

Around size 16 but it varies, especially in trousers.

BabCNesbitt · 06/11/2021 20:33

@NeverDropYourMooncup Do you have anything more useful to add? My point was that weight and dress size don’t really relate much to each another.

User2638483 · 06/11/2021 20:34

At that weight but slightly shorter 5’4 I’m an 18. So I vote 16-18 or a Large.

DistantSkye · 06/11/2021 20:37

I'm a bit taller and around that weight and wear a 12. Surely it must depend on how muscular you are too, and where you carry weight?.

Kerplunkk · 06/11/2021 20:40

I would say 16-18
I’m 12st and wear a 12-14 on top and a definite 14 on bottom.
But as others have said depends where you order from and what you’re ordering

turnaroundtime · 06/11/2021 20:41

@BabCNesbitt

These threads always boggle my mind. At my heaviest I’ve been 10st 8lb and at that point I was almost a size 16.
You most likely have extremely low muscle mass and thin brittle bones
Classicblunder · 06/11/2021 20:57

14-16 but I wear a lot of stretchy things. I also weight train so have a bit more muscle

southlondoner02 · 06/11/2021 21:00

I'm 5'5 and 11 stone and a size 16. 14 in shops that massively oversize like M&S.

I've been in lots of clothes shops recently and no trouble trying anything on, but maybe depends on the area.

SmellyNelliey · 06/11/2021 21:01

5"6 14st.4lb and I wear a 14 comfortably a 16 is too big

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/11/2021 00:04

It varies so much - I'm 5ft 6, about a stone lighter than you having lost just over 4st in about 5 months. In the process of replacing my wardrobe (aiming to lose more but no bloody clothes left so needs must) and I'm shocked to find I'm mostly a 12-14. My hip and bust measurements suggest more like a 16 on size charts but that isn't matching reality - and I'm definitely not squeezing myself in to stuff I swear.

Stuff like leggings is very flexible - mint velvet ones are great, good stretch and high waisted. I had a pair that took me through about a full pregnancy and then a 3 stone range before becoming stupidly big. Maybe try them in a large?

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 07/11/2021 00:06

I'm 5'4 and when I was 14 st I was a size 18. I'm an 'apple' shape.

MilkyButts · 07/11/2021 00:16

These threads amaze me, I currently weigh 13st at 5ft5 and wear a size 12 top and 14 bottom.

I'd start around a size 14 and see how you get on OP!

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 07/11/2021 00:20

Are you by any chance a pear with a small waist? British clothes are cut for the pear and a small waist is a real bonus in terms of sizing. I am a top-heavy apple and I'm at least two sizes larger than pears who weigh the same as me Sad.

JumperandJacket · 07/11/2021 00:21

14-16 depending on the style and shop.

Well done on your impressive weight loss!

Guineapigfosterer · 07/11/2021 00:32

I'm 5 ft 6 and 17 stone and I wear a size 16. I wear my weight all over and have a quite long build. When I was 13st I was a size 14 hope that helps.

Hortonhearsadoctorwho · 07/11/2021 00:34

It depends on your body shape, I’m size 12 bottom but have smaller hips than average. Size 18 top but I have bigger boobs than average. I’m like an upside down triangle Sad

Me too.

@statetrooperstacey

I would really really refer to the size chart unless you enjoy sending clothes back. Also read reviews!
Sorry I have to disagree with this.

I'm a dressmaker and also make my own clothes from patterns which rely on actual tape measure measurements rather than a size.

My measurements pretty consistently bring me out as a size 16 on most UK sizing charts for ready to wear clothes in both tops and bottoms.

If I put a pair of size 16 trousers / jeans on they would hang off me. I have a large bum but no hips or waist and my waist is really high . I easily fit a size 14 and squeeze into a 12.

Tops I have large boobs but a much smaller 'high bust' measurement. On ready to wear clothes this brings me out anywhere between a 16-18 but in reality a 10 -12 fits everywhere except over the boobs. The result is in ready to wear I have to wear a size to fit my boobs rather than the rest of me. In the clothes I make I cut a size 10 and then do a full bust adjustment to accommodate my size 16 boobs.

Which is why I make my own clothes.

I'm 11.8st at 5.4 with a 33 inch waist, 34 inch high bust, 40 inch bust and 42 inch hips.

Weight/size/ measurements mean nothing in ready to wear clothes

Wagsandclaws · 07/11/2021 00:50

Blimey I'm always amazed at how small people are when heavier, I am apple shaped and lost 6.5 stone now. I'm 11.12 and still a bloody size 16 ( sometimes an 18 as I've got big boobs, 38 F and a saggy tummy which thankfully is much smaller but its still there and always will be thanks to 5 children and being 18.4 at one time ).

It massively depends on how you carry your weight and whether you are an apple or pear Ect. My legs are stupidly skinny as are my arms, I am quite disproportionate unfortunately. I'd say start at a 16 if 20's are hanging off you Smile congratulations on your loss so far it's a great feeling isn't it?

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/11/2021 00:52

I'm a sewer too @pastabest, for the same reasons- hips and bust are 2-3 dress sizes bigger than my waist, big thighs, but the rest of my frame (shoulders, back, upper bust, wrists etc) all go with the waist size so RTW is generally grim. Anything with back zips especially as that tends to give me a big hump where the excess fabric and zip stick out Blush

Yes, me too. I'm 10st 2 at 5'4 and still a 12/14 in most things thanks to my 34E boobs.

My hips are only 34 inches but unless I want to look like Desperate Dan, showing them off in skinny low rise size 8 jeans is not an option.

Classicblunder · 07/11/2021 07:35

Yeah boobs make a huge difference - I am a 14-16 at 13 st 10 but at 10 st, I am still in 12-14 because boobs

pastabest · 07/11/2021 08:27

Funnily enough I have some older tops that are size 10 -12 that fit pretty nicely. 15-20 years go in the prime of Jordan/glamour models, fake boobs and wonderbras etc when boobs were in fashion the fashion 'blocks' for clothes were more often cut on the basis that the might need to accommodate breasts.

Fashion blocks now seem to assume no one has breasts above a B cup, the fashionable styles currently don't really suit the larger of nork and most models even in the likes of next and M&S are almost straight up and down. It's very annoying.
