High waist & dreaded 'gunt'

Sorry to be crude but how do women with a slight tummy avoid enhancing it with high waisted jeans or trousers?! I have a lovely shirt that looks much dressier tucked in jeans but the nice ones all seem to be high waisted. I am not massively overweight (a tall quite slim size 12) but being the wrong size of 40 and two kids doesn't do anything for your lower belly! It feels like pregnancy again with either over bump or under bump style trousers! I have only tried more fitted style high waisted jeans with loose tops. maybe I need to go the full hog and get the thick denim type so it doesn't cling? I just feel massive! Any advise on nice jeans for tucking shirt in for nice meal/casual with friends type thing.

As pp have said, thick NON stretchy denim and don't get anything too tight.

If anyone has any recommendations for non-stretch denim that comes in a waist size of 34-36 without ballooning hips to match (I am not an hourglass LOL) that would be great. Men's jeans can sometimes work if I get them hemmed, but only if I want perfectly straight leg jeans- which I don't. I want a tapered 1980s sort of silhouette (complete with what my partner calls "80s long-butt syndrome", LOL).

@Helloise

I see a lot of younger plus-size women just going for it- high waisted bottoms, tucked in tops, even crop tops. It's just a body shape, you may think you're "hiding" it with loose, oversized clothes, but you're really not. Someone who confidently accepts their body shape and wears cute clothes and styles will always be more visually attractive to me* than someone who is clearly trying to "disguise" something. No, that doesn't mean that only tight or fitted clothes or tucked in clothes can be cute and stylish - I personally, for example, probably wouldn't go for the look you're describing tend as I tend to go for loose, sculptural, kind of arty Japanese-influenced styles (think COS) but it's not because I'm trying to hide my body - I'm just trying to look cool and interesting and be comfortable. Some of my favourite clothes probably (definitely) make me look "bigger" than I am and wouldn't be considered flattering by some people and I don't care a jot, I am allowed to take up as much space as I like and look how I like and so are you.

*I could give a rat's ass about the male gaze but I am a gay woman and I am speaking about what is attractive to me.

Bravo, this is a great post. You are absolutely right.

I am a size 8-10 and tall and could probably wear most things, but I stand about nitpicking my body all the time, while my cousins in their 20s are bigger than me but enjoy their bodies and fashion and don't give a shit whether they've got a roll in a crop top or whatever. Of the people I know, it's us in our 40s who seem to hate our bodies the most, despite the fact that my own body has made three amazing children and I should be bloody proud of it.

Anyway, back to the point, can people recommend some specific jeans that are 100% cotton or close to it? I really struggle to find any that haven't got millions of stretch in them. I like boyfriend and straight leg styles and high waisted doesn't work for me, so I am stumped trying to find decent options in the shops.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2021 11:44

I had a pair from Pieces that were old style non-stretchy denim.

Lipsandlashes · 03/11/2021 11:44

@CimCardashian

This springs to mind!
After two c-sections and being the wrong side of 40, this, unfortunately, is definitely me Blush
TreeSmuggler · 03/11/2021 12:32

Tbh I don't see many women worrying about this, and it makes sense, why should they.

What I've noticed is practically everyone is wearing high waisted jeans, about 5% of them are women that have no bulge there at all like the model above. 95% do have a bulge there. It's just part of the look now and not something that is a fashion faux pas.

Jeans normally cling to your legs and butt and show the shape whether you are big or small. Now it's the same with that area I guess.

@NiceGerbil

Gunt?

Not heard that before!

I'll add it to cankles, camel toe, muffin top, double tit etc etc in my vocab.

Going to look at pics now as still not sure what is!

Utterly depressing to see this list of words used by women about parts of our bodies we’re made to feel unhappy about.

Do men have any of these?

Mankyfruitbowl · 03/11/2021 13:26

Men have moobs and beer guts, but I agree it's way worse for women. It feels like a constant stream of new words to describe our "flaws"

AbstractDot · 03/11/2021 22:29

Have to say, my belly hanging down under tshirts has been the bain of my life for years. Hearing the terms FUPA and Gunt somehow normalise it for me. For years I thought I was one of few people who had this type of overhang, now it has a name and I'm not alone!

I learned recently that the “scientific” name is “panniculus”. It’s a nice neutral word to have on hand. I still prefer “booby-do”, though 🤣
HoobleDooble · 03/11/2021 22:42

I'm a strict 'long untucked top' person because anything with a front seam or zip makes me look like I've got a front bum.

CatonMat · 03/11/2021 22:43
Grin A panniculus is different from a cute pot belly. It's a whole different ball game.
immersivereader · 04/11/2021 00:57

God I can't get offended by this.

I have high waisted jeans and also have had two sections, leaving me with the delightful apron - I find a tasteful side tuck drapes the gunt marvellously whilst simultaneously giving the impression I have long legs. Spanx helps reduces unwanted guntiness.

wildery · 04/11/2021 12:27

Thicker non-stretch denim, as PPs have said, and I'd avoid buttons - zips seem to give a better line. I quite like Gap's mom jeans.

GoingForAWalk · 04/11/2021 14:00

I hate the word Gunt but I'm not offended by it

I though gunt just meant a fat vagina, the part that creates a fat bump below your fat tummy tyre. Which is what I have.

I can't quite envision it as all in one.

lazylinguist · 04/11/2021 14:16

Please stop trying to police the words people choose to use about themselves. And stop assigning self-loathing to people's use of language when there's no evidence of it. The OP has every right to talk about what clothes she does or doesn't find flattering for her body shape. Her posts about it are cheerfully honest and good-humoured, not belittling or nasty. And if you're too delicate to bear the word 'gunt', why click on the thread?
