Anyone else dislike current dress and top fashions?!

I am so not keen on floral, frilly, puffed-sleeve, loose-fitting dresses and tops. I also don't like shirt dresses, especially the loose-fitting ones currently around. I'd like to buy some new clothes and I just don't like the things that shops/websites are full of! Wondering whether anyone else feels the same?! And when clothing retailers will move on??

I don't like anything on the market at all, and havent done for a while. I used to love obsessing over clothes even if I only purchased minimally.

I am tired of the same old cheap options - animal print, puff sleeves, cropped or too long, midi prairie, cheap shiny fabrics, chunky jumpers that look good on no-one.

Looking at H&M a few days ago was a revelation. I thought I might find some cotton leggings. Instead I was swept into a slurry of NEW IN which included over 800 items for one week. Fuck fast, pointless fashion, honestly.

aftonwater · 20/10/2021 13:29

I don’t like the floral, loose, tiered dresses around at the moment but I do love a shirt dress.

Threewheeler1 · 20/10/2021 13:36

Yes to an oversized or bib shirt, but absolutely no to the frilly necks, big sleeves, massive cuffs and unflattering additions in horrible fabrics.
I'm with you OP. Nothing is appealing to me anymore and I'm wondering if I'm just not getting it but it all looks so disposable and horrible.
Longing for a bit of quality fabric and some flattering shapes, good tailoring in lovely colours! Feels like that stuff is never coming back & makes me want to do a pattern cutting course & make my own Grin

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/10/2021 13:40

I can't find any tops I like. I just want something human-shaped that falls nicely and doesn't cling. I do not want oversized, boxy, high necked tops, peplums, shirring, cropped waists or frills.

It's the good quality basics i'm struggling the most with. As PP said, fuck fast fashion.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 20/10/2021 13:56

I agree OP, nothing of good quality and everything is either baggy or cropped. Am feeling very uninspired by everything online, even John Lewis has very little choice or quality. I did however find some decent tops in French Connection recently. I’m not a fan of massive florally dresses either, just a normal semi smart shift dress is really hard to find I think.

CointreauVersial · 20/10/2021 14:07

Sometimes it takes me a while to get on board with a trend - I remember when high-waisted trousers came in, and it took me ages to shake off that 80s/90s association. Now I wouldn't wear anything else. Same with midi hemlines and wider jeans.

It's true that if you can't find what you'd like ANYWHERE in the shops then it might be an indication that fashion has moved on without you.

Having said that......as the years go by, you gain very strong ideas about which trends won't work for you, and it's fine to leave them by the wayside. I never felt comfortable in anything with a frill, or a loud floral print, so I've concluded that I should stick to less fussy, plainer styles.

I get the feeling there's a slight shift, and shorter hemlines are coming back. We've hit peak buffet dress.

Floisme · 20/10/2021 14:09

I don't like the fussy dresses and tops but there are things I do like, e.g. the oversize blazers, the flat shoes (not trainers), the cowboy boots. I was in H&M the other day and I really liked the display of layered knitwear and quilted stuff - yes it'll be shit quality and I wouldn't want to wear it like the models do but plenty of ideas I thought.
Lord knows UK fashion has many faults but I think one of its pluses is that, even if the dominant look doesn't appeal, I can usually find something else that does.

TheLeadbetterLife · 20/10/2021 14:20

There are small elements of the current fashions that I like - 90s style jeans (so much better for me than skinny), flat shoes / boots, loose fit blazers - but a lot of it looks ugly to my eyes. I guess that's the point of fashion though - you're not supposed to get it unless you're young!

I agree finding quality is the big problem, though.

I discovered this year that La Redoute's own label clothes are of an impressive quality, at least the things I've bought, which have all been in the organic cotton / sustainable materials ranges.

I got a midi length denim pencil skirt that is a thick, 100% cotton, very nice quality denim. Also a classic white linen shirt and various organic cotton t-shirts. I'm delighted with them. Also, a lot of their cuts are very classic and stylish.

I live in Portugal, so I don't know if you can get the same ranges in the UK.

Floisme · 20/10/2021 14:24

The best part of current fashion for me is the probably the choice of style in jeans. I've never known this amount of variety last so long.

SusannaRowan · 20/10/2021 14:35

Cowboy boots you say? I'd missed that look, will dig mine out.
I hate all the Holly Hobbie type stuff, frills aren't my thing. Also dislike the 80s vibes, oversized blazers and high waisted tapered jeans, just no. I did it the first time round and it wasn't a good look then either.

But as a pp said, I do love the variety of jeans. I'm back in skinny flares, yet I can still get skinnies and although I don't like Mom jeans they are a choice too, plus jeggings, bootleg, straight....

CointreauVersial · 20/10/2021 14:38

That's true, Floisme.

Except low-rise - they've gone, thank goodness (but no doubt we'll all be back in them by 2035 Grin ).

EvelynBeatrice · 20/10/2021 15:04

I hear you. I’m not sure that ‘recycled polyester’ and ‘viscose ecovero’ labels on lots of garments is the selling point that shops seem to think it is! I too loathe high necks and frilly nylon-y garments in vomit inducing patterns. I never used to set foot in an H &M without finding some treasure even outwith the premium range. Not now.
However it’s still possible to get some nice things if you look hard. You have to be creative in your search terms online. I have been including the words ‘cotton’, ‘wool’ and ‘boat neck’ a lot more! I will be buying a lot less and looking for stuff that lasts …

Pheasantlysurprised · 20/10/2021 15:15

ive also noticed that when a relatively normal, practical, decent item arrives in a store it sells out immediately. They obviously aren't listening.

If you search tops under women and then the same search under men, most of the men's items are higher quality, often cheaper and always practical.
Women's on the other hand are thinner, always themed, wildly patterned, with either stupid length sleeves, no sleeves, sleeve frills, too low a neckline, giant sleeve ends that wont fit under a jacket, cropped or billowing, and usually polyester.

Cant locate a dress either that isn't blowing, luridly patterned, too long, and do even get me started in those fat rolls of fabric that constitute a cheaply made elasticated waistband. Most women who wear skirts would prefer a flat, neat waist even if it is elastic.

Animal Prints Hmm

AuntieMarys · 21/10/2021 17:59

I've just been to our large city for lunch and a bit of a mooch. So depressing. Doesn't help that I'm tall with size 9 feet, so shoes/ boots/ trousers/most things are not there for me.
I am sick of wearing the same things I've worn for 3 or 4 winters. I look a twat in a dress and don't get me started on frills, shirred waists and high necks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/10/2021 18:06

Everything’s high necked now, when I was young everything was low cut.

Coogee · 21/10/2021 18:11

If you hadn’t mentioned the current fashions in your OP, I wouldn’t have known what they were.

woodhill · 21/10/2021 18:18

Yes, I'm not keen either

Coogee · 21/10/2021 18:24

HellieOldie · 21/10/2021 18:43

Totally agree with you OP. I’m old enough (just!) to remember similar trends from the 70s and to me they look dowdy and old-fashioned. Also struggling with chunky knits…don’t suit me at all.

Owl55 · 21/10/2021 19:06

It’s like living in the Amish community

Inastatus · 21/10/2021 19:11

Totally agree OP. I’m really struggling to find a nice autumn dress that doesn’t make me look like one of the Walton’s!
