Anyone else dislike current dress and top fashions?!

I am so not keen on floral, frilly, puffed-sleeve, loose-fitting dresses and tops. I also don't like shirt dresses, especially the loose-fitting ones currently around. I'd like to buy some new clothes and I just don't like the things that shops/websites are full of! Wondering whether anyone else feels the same?! And when clothing retailers will move on??

I quite like the trend (not the overly frilly) but still struggling Confused I've been looking for a few nice tops but literally haven't found any I like yet. Everything is so bleh.

SantanaBinLorry · 22/10/2021 14:50

[quote Coogee]Except low-rise - they've gone, thank goodness (but no doubt we'll all be back in them by 2035 grin ).

yes! I've missed these soooo bad. I embraced skinny eventually but high waist, mum and boot-cut can bog off!

ExConstance · 22/10/2021 14:54

I prefer low rise too, they suit my shape more. I have some lovely flared ones I got earlier in the summer, I feel happy when I wear them.

SantanaBinLorry · 22/10/2021 14:56

I got a big baggy/flared pair from Teenzshop Grin I'm quite small.
They are brill.

lazylinguist · 22/10/2021 15:02

I agree. I like clean lines and nothing puffy, boxy, flouncy or frilly. Loose things hang from my largish bust and make me look like a marquee. I'm ok with some shirt dresses, if they aren't shapeless sacks. Oh and I hate floral and 'ditsy' prints.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 22/10/2021 15:03

Low rise are in! But on young students with flat tummies who wear them with crop exercise tops, so IMO you don't need to emulate that unless you really really want to. No-one is going to gasp if you go out with skinnies on, despite what mumsnet have been claiming....

LauraAshleyDuvetCover · 22/10/2021 15:04

I'm trying to find a dress to wear for a wedding.

I'm an hourglass, and have put on some weight since covid. Only 12 rather than 10, but my bust has got quite a lot bigger and I'm self-conscious that I'm bigger than I was.

I can't find a single dress that doesn't make me look matronly. It's the high necks and not much shape at the waist.

Floisme · 22/10/2021 15:05

I do like the low rise look on other people. But in real life, I find it fiendishly uncomfortable, plus call me b'a prude but my arse is a sight I reserve for my most intimate friends only.
I can tolerate it down to my belly button but any lower than that and I'll be off back to dresses, flouncy or not.

OooPourUsACupLove · 22/10/2021 15:20

I’m 5”1 and size 16, so roughly the shape of a cottage loaf. Frills, midis, puffs, boxes, high necks and so on are comicly bad looks on me.

I’m just hoping my existing clothes last until the pendulum swings back again.

KatieKoala · 22/10/2021 15:21

I'm also an hourglass and agree, it's really difficult to find anything at the minute. High neck lines, especially without a waist, make me look like Queen Victoria. Not the young, itv drama version either.

I do like that people are prioritising comfort though. I was a late nineties / early noughties teen, and the things we wore could never have been called comfortable! I never want heels to become an essential for a night out ever again, but I know some people love them.

woodhill · 22/10/2021 16:00

@Sittinginthesand

I’m another shorty that needs simple, neat, plain clothes to look presentable. Flowery flouncy stuff makes me look like a stumpy mediaeval peasant. The current fashion trends are lazy imo, they don’t need to be well cut or tailored to fit so the manufacturers can churn them out and only have to make a few sizes, cheap fabrics are another saving.
Same with me and I agree the boxy look is lazy and lacks finesse

I have ordered a tie neck blouse but wondering if it will make my boobs look huge and feel like I am being strangled

woodhill · 22/10/2021 16:01

And I'm not wearing polyester ever

Coogee · 22/10/2021 16:34

yes! I've missed these soooo bad. I embraced skinny eventually but high waist, mum and boot-cut can bog off!

River Island have low waist skinnies.

Low rise are in! But on young students with flat tummies who wear them with crop exercise tops

I’ve got the abdomen for the crop top and low rise combo but I’m not sure my colleagues would approve.

PrincessNutNuts · 22/10/2021 16:44

This thread has made me realise that I have absolutely no idea what is in fashion.

I'm equal parts horrified and thrilled.

I have been looking at things like these but have held off until I do the full winter drag out to see if I need them.

(Apologies to the non-lovers of brown. )

Threewheeler1 · 22/10/2021 18:18

@foxgoosefinch

Every so often fashion seems to decide that it’s a moment for brown - was in H&M yesterday looking at things for DD and everything is beige, tan, mustard and sludge. Even ghastly browns for kids’ clothes (WHY would anyone want to put small kids in such an unflattering colour?) Half the range looked like it was torn from the backs of Victorian urchins.

The last time brown was fashionable at the start of the 2000s we all went mad for it and only came to our senses several years after. Now I see photos of myself in flouncy boho brown corduroy skirts and knees high brown boots looking like an extra from a line dancing workshop and cringe…

Don’t be sucked in! Resist! Brown is never good. If not, in three years’ time we’ll all wake up and realise just how horrible we all looked in sludge mustard brown cord. Grin

Oh my god, yes. Brown makes me look like I've been living in an underground bunker for a year eating nothing but plastic wrapped white food and dumplings...Grin Come to think of it, that's how lockdown has made me feel. I try clothes on in the shops now and they all seem to have the magic knack of making me look like an ageing male darts player. I just want beige, nude and brown polyester to disappear forever. And the high necks give the impression that my boobs are scampering away via my waistband. Thanks for this thread OP, it's really made me laugh! I agree with everything GrinGrinGrin
SylvesterTheCat · 22/10/2021 22:00

There is a difference between fashion and style. Wish more shops would see this.

DGFB · 22/10/2021 22:05

I’m still shopping at Hobbs, White Company and a bit of M&S which have loads of normal clothes. I’m clearly not fashionable!

ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 22/10/2021 22:12

I was in town today. The shop windows were full of Amish looking dresses. Who is buying these dresses? All the young women in town were wearing crop tops and jeans and the older women were wearing puffy coats and jeans.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 22/10/2021 22:47

Brown is good, an underrated colour Grin

My favourite party dress is brown silk with gold stitching, it looks so good on my skin/hair (am sort of olive with brown/blonde hair)

And also yes to those White Company dresses from 10 years ago, my staple. They were comfy, flattering, washable. Easy to throw on

I miss that style

Not bought any clothing at White Company for years now…

PrincessNutNuts · 22/10/2021 23:18

I always wanted the day at the races dress from Pretty Woman. That was brown, right?

I don't really wear brown clothes but brown eyeliner suits me so I'm open to it.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 23/10/2021 01:09

I feel like I picked the wrong time for a wardrobe revamp and I'll be more successful in 2025!

Its so hard to imagine what my new wardrobe looks like when it's all oversized and frills. It also feels so out of step with the global environmental crisis. I'm not saying we should all have a wardrobe of 12 items but surely there should be more focus on fewer items that fit and flatter.

gofg · 23/10/2021 01:36

I couldn't disagree with you more foxgoose. I think brown's a great colour and I'm really pleased to see it again after what feels like decades of grey. My favourite is that very dark chocolate brown that's almost black except it's so much kinder to my face.

I agree, I love brown colours, mustard, tan, even "sludge". Much nicer than everything in black!

Vohgue · 23/10/2021 01:56

Having shops full of plain basic, neatly cut styles in block colours and natural fabrics would be so dull though. I think you end up a bit dated if you stick with the one style that suits you your entire life?

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 23/10/2021 07:39

Also, that shop already exists

It’s called Uniqlo

Thatswhatmamasaid · 23/10/2021 08:08

Having read this thread, its not really surprising that people are complaining about polyester and badly cut clothes when H&M and Zara are constantly mentioned. What else would you expect from these shops? There are lots of smaller retailers now offering brilliant quality clothes, well cut with natural fabrics.
