Is anyone else totally shit at dressing to go 'Out Out'?

What do you wear when you go out in the evening?

I've got my daytime/casual style sorted but am clueless for when I go anywhere in the evening or anywhere where I need to dress up!

Off to London for a weekend next month and seeing a show, hoping to have a couple of nice meals out etc, so could really do with some ideas.

I'm aged 45, 5ft 4, size 6/8. I love black, skinny jeans, faux leather leggings, leather jackets etc, but also happy to wear skirts and dresses.

I just wear my daytime outfits but with different accessories and shoes. I have a pair of low gold heels for evening. London is pretty casual and you can feel overdressed otherwise, I find this particularly if I’m out with younger friends (I’m also 45). It’s of course fine to dress up if you want to but plenty of people don’t.

I don't have much advice but I'm very much the same. I don't know what I'm doing with it all.

I find hair the hardest bit! What the hell do you do with your hair for a night out? I feel like I either look totally overdone as if I'm about to walk down the aisle, or like I've not tried at all. I have crazy wavy/curly hair, so perhaps I have my genetics to thank for this problem.

To answer your actual question - I tend to wear a short playsuit. They suit my figure and if you're wearing heels they look quite dressy. Then I'd wear a necklace and bracelet, maybe dangly earrings if I'm putting my hair up.

sunshinelover69 · 21/10/2021 09:55

I tend to wear similar outfit but add nicer jewellery/earrings and brighter lipstick. As someone has already said, London is very casual.

doadeer · 21/10/2021 09:56

I just do my hair nicer and wear make up. London is casual these days it's more about understated I think

Hoolihan · 21/10/2021 09:57

Jeans, black top, heeled boots, big earrings. Bob's your uncle.

Here the Queen shows us how it's done.

I wouldn't say that's a going out look though? Not a dressy one anyway?

I also really struggle with this. Black drains me, but I want a fab, cool top to wear for evenings out. Really struggling to find something that isn't trashy, overly formal, or really frilly frou frou.

HereWeGoAgains · 21/10/2021 17:21

I wear a short dress, black tights and my DMs. Don’t really do jeans and heels anymore. Guess I might wear my heeled boots if I was dressing up a bit more.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/10/2021 17:30

It depends on the venue. I'm also becoming increasingly of the, 'Wear what the fuck I want' mentality. The last few times I've been out I've worn:
Black lace backless dress with black trainers
Silk maxi dress and bovver boots with a leather jacket
Flared blue jeans with a silk shirt and Converse
Leather pencil skirt and a 'Buck Foris' t-shirt, with Converse
Black mini shirt dress, tights and heeled ankle boots

PackedintheUK · 21/10/2021 17:39

Yes, I need to start with comfortable shoes which will spoil most outfits Grin

I agree London is very casual though. Most people out in the evening are wearing either what they went to work in or what they've been touristing all day in.

Those outfits sound ace!

That's very kind of you. I probably look like a total loon most of the time, but I very much intend to wear what I like, rather than what I think I should.

notoldjustpastyoung · 22/10/2021 18:13

Surely 'going out' somewhere different for an evening is a time to get out of your rut and do the lot. Hair, makeup, dressy colourful clothes, jewelry painted nails. It doesn't happen every day. I love it and I'm over 80. I have a full and delightful wardrobe and rarely have to buy anything new. Go for it.

Superfoodie123 · 22/10/2021 18:21

Depends where you're going? In this weather heeled boots jazz up any outfit. I'm out tomorrow evening (dinner and drinks) and plan to wear a leopard print cord skirt, high neck black blouse, tights and chunky heeled boots

KatieKoala · 22/10/2021 18:41

I wear the same thing as during the day tbh! Jeans and top. Done Grin. Might change the shoes, bag and coat.

I find dresses less versatile. They often seem to do either day or night.

Durbeyfield · 22/10/2021 21:38

I’m marking my place. I love dressing for day to day but never seem to have much in the way of ‘out out’ looks.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/10/2021 21:52

See, I find dresses very versatile. Can be worn with trainers, bovver boots or heeled boots and different jackets, for a different vibe.

I think everyone except me thinks this tbh Grin. I'm a jeans kind of person anyway tbf. I wear them pretty much every day, including for work (jeans are part of my uniform, which is very lucky for me).
Indecisivelurcher · 22/10/2021 22:03

Yes, I have something coming up and don't know wtf to wear! Jeans and a nice top would be fine, it's the top that totally stumps me. Wtf is a nice top.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/10/2021 22:19

I struggle with tops. Other than plain black t-shirts, nothing ever seems to suit me or I hate the fabric.

whatisthisinhere · 23/10/2021 01:10

I'm so glad someone else has asked wtf is a nice top. I always resort to black T-shirt's. If I wear anything loose and blouses I end up looking huge because of my wide shoulders, so need something that isn't billowy.

Wow - I love the sound of these outfits!
Indecisivelurcher · 23/10/2021 06:31

Not got any answers though have we @whatisthisinhere... Maybe a nice top is a myth and no-one really knows 😉

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2021 07:40

Sheece - I think I might have made them sound better than they were in real life. I'm little and old and rather fat and rather ugly, but I do like clothes! 😂

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/10/2021 09:07

Short-ish dress, smart heeled boots, black leather biker jacket
