When you are in your round the house clothes, would you look presentable if someone knocked the door?

I just caught sight of myself in the mirror. Baggy leopard print pyjama bottoms, oversized t-shirt, fleecy top over as I am cold, sheepskin slippers, scruffy ponytail, old mascara.

If anyone called, I would panic!

I think I need to invest in some nice ‘loungewear’ or make sure I’m at least in jeans for the day even if I’m not going out.

(Note: I am clean)

Yes always. I never slob around in pyjamas. I might stay in my pyjamas until about 10 on the weekends but after that I’m dressed in casual clothes, hair brushed and a bit of make up but I might have my glasses on rather than lenses.

StarlightLady · 17/10/2021 08:34

I don’t own PJs or joggers. Leggings are as near as l get to it.

twirlinginthesnow · 17/10/2021 08:37

In the week I'm always up, dressed, hair clean and dry with make up on because I do the school run daily. So I'd be fine and presentable at any time from around 7am. Not smartly dressed because I'm a sahm so no workwear, but jeans and a nice top/jumper or a dress with tights etc at this time of year.

At the weekends I'd likely be in my pjs and dressing gown until around 10am! I still shower, dry my hair and get dressed after that though, just don't bother with make up unless I'm going out anywhere. When I say get dressed I mean clean day time clothes but not necessarily anything particularly nice, if we're at home it's generally lounging around clothes.

If I'm unshowered and in my pjs I likely wouldn't answer the door unless I knew it was my mum or something! I'd send DH if it was someone unexpected Grin

MatildaIThink · 17/10/2021 08:38

Most of the time yes, I always shower, get properly dressed etc. I don't mean wearing a full face of makeup or dressed to the nines, but clean jeans and a T-shirt, a jumper maybe hair tied back etc. but not a slob. There would have been occasions when my children were babies that I might have just had a child be sick over me but people seem to understand that.

Vindo · 17/10/2021 08:38

I like to be comfortable but presentable. If it's a day in the house I'll get up and shower, hair back in a ponytail and minimal makeup. Clothing wise it's either leggings or joggers, uggs, t shirt and hoodie.

No underwear is just a step too far for me!

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 17/10/2021 08:42

I started investing in nice loungewear during the pandemic. I have a range - from soft yoga pants and t-shirts in plain grey or black, to proper floaty things from places like 100Stars and some actual silk PJs. My MiL has bought me a Shibumi cashmere dressing gown for Christmas which I'm unreasonably excited about! Have definitely overspent a bit, although barely bought any other clothes in the last two years, so don't feel guilty! I work from home too so spend lots of time and home and might as well feel half decent.

TacoTues · 17/10/2021 08:50

Our kitchen is at the front. Sink at the window.

Which I LOVE as means I can wave to neighbours when washing up. Can see delivery drivers coming etc.

But it does mean that DH and I don't wear dressing gown/PJs past 9am.

Also I WFH so do have delivery drivers etc throughout the day.

I've just restocked my "work clothes" have got fleece lined leggings and some dress length jumpers. Both really casual hoodie style and some knitted ones.

I'm trying to convince myself it'd be OK to do the school run in the hoody dresses.....but haven't braved it yet. Feel like if I were 10 years younger it'd be ok but that I'll just look like a twat.

Beachbabe1 · 17/10/2021 09:00

No!!! 🤣 A braless, make up less mess!!!

Coffeepot72 · 17/10/2021 09:00

I feel rubbish if I’m not presentable. I always have a shower first thing and pop a bit of make up on. My round the house stuff is comfy and casual but I could definitely answer the door (or join a Teams meeting)

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 17/10/2021 09:06

No bra, messy bun, trackies or pyjamas, or leggings and a baggy T-shirt.

TBH I don't look much better when I do go out the house these days. I've basically given up, but am trying to do a bit better at being presentable outside the house at least.

simitra · 17/10/2021 09:17

One of the few good things during covid was the lack of what I call "doorstep timewasters" selling. collecting, chatting about religion, politics etc. Not to mention the opportunist distraction thieves "Im just working down the road luv can I come in and check the water pressure/gas etc.". I realise that some lonely people may have missed the interaction with these randoms but I never did.

Now I notice that they are crawling out from under their stones and drifting back. These "ring" type intelligent door bells have become a lot more affordable and easy to install. They are wonderful for sorting out who you may (and may not) wish to open the door to. You can have an entire conversation over the intercom. The putative caller is just staring at the blank door while you can see them. So wonderfully intimidating. So its much easier for those of us who are not "appropriately" dressed to say "its not convenient, try another house". Then you just hang up the intercom and ignore further rings.

Rina66 · 17/10/2021 11:28

I love a bit of loungewear! My favourites are knitted leggings sets with matching hip length jumpers and a long cardie over the top, essentially just knitted pyjamas but I feel more put together - I've got black, navy, grey, khaki, outmeal and charcoal - buy a new set every winter. Great with trainers or boots and a fur or padded gilet if I need to nip out. Also change in to this when I get home too.

2catsandhappy · 17/10/2021 11:40

I too was a bit mis-matched/mess-head until I recently answered the door to a food delivery. Turns out I knew the driver from work. Oops. Threw out all the mis-matched slobby stuff and bought nice pj's. It gave me the kick up the bum that I neededGrin

Woeismethischristmas · 17/10/2021 11:46

Skinny jeans (don’t care if no longer in) t shirt long cardigan of some description. My pyjamas are really boring black jersey bottoms and long sleeve t so I’d get away with it.

MintyGreenDream · 17/10/2021 11:46

I like to.be matching but my dossing clothes are rarely ironed if I'm honest. Take me as you find me

steppemum · 17/10/2021 11:54

well I think there are two sides to this.

  • what do other people think of me shock horror. This part I don't care. If what I am wearing is good enough for my family, then it is good enough for the plumber/amozon delivery guy.
  • is what I wear round the house shite. Well, I have always worked from home, since kids were babies, so I ahve always got up and got dressed. All my day to day clothes are comfortable for daily life, so round the house, going to shops, doing school run etc. I have smarter clothes for when I work face to face. But my daily clothes are comfortable and presentable.
I don't wear pjs all day, and don't come home from things and change into pjs. I wear actual clothes all day until bedtime. If I've been in dress and heels, I might come home and change into jeans and hoodie, but not pjs Only exception might be if I had an early bath and was in pjs and dressing gown.
steppemum · 17/10/2021 12:00

What intrigues me, reading this thread, is that to me leggings Tshirt and cardie are clothes. Perfectly acceptbale for school run or wfh, or curled up with netflix.
Lots of people seem to think these are somehow not presentable to the outside world. Which makes me wonder what you think is?
I only wear make up to weddings and parties.
Do people think they need instagram type outfits to leave the house? But I never ever look like that!

genuinely curious

bananaboats · 17/10/2021 12:06

If I'm at home I'm in pjs, every postie and delivery person in the area has prob seen me in them Grin

Milkbottlelegs · 17/10/2021 12:17

How can you be clean if you have old mascara on? Surely that means you haven’t washed your face?

Once I’m dressed I’m always wearing something that would be ok to leave the house in. I’m not really a loungewear person, I wear jeans pretty much all the time. Gym clothes if I’m going to the gym.

RampantIvy · 17/10/2021 12:19

Yes. I don't feel motivated to do anything if I don't get dressed. I wouldn't go shopping in my joggers, but yes, I would happily open the front door to someone in them.

Clandestin · 17/10/2021 12:56

@Simonjt

No, its generally pants only at home, I do have some emergency shorts by the front door.
Is your house kept at a incredibly toasty temperature, @Simonjt?

I once moved into a gorgeous shared house I thought I’d missed out on because the Australian who’d briefly lived there before me thought the place was unacceptably freezing because he couldn’t routinely walk around indoors barefoot in shorts and T-shirt. (This was winter in a draughty, 19thc house, heated by an open fire and storage heaters, in the west of Ireland.)

Simonjt · 17/10/2021 13:02

Not really, its generally quite warm, warmer when the flat below has their heating on. Thermostat is at 20 (day time obviously), so not excessively warm.

Alonghairinapie · 17/10/2021 13:08

I never wear pants after 6 o’ clock

DelphiniumBlue · 17/10/2021 13:21

If its a weekend, I'm often in my nightdress till quite late, as I'll shower etc after doing the hoovering and cleaning. My nightie is knee-length but has spaghetti straps so not really suitable to answer the door in- I have a cardigan or hoody to hand to ensure decency if need be.
I wish I could wear pyjamas but they are far too hot for me - hence the strappy nightie!
Most of the time I am decently attired though, I am usually in a dress or hoody & leggings.

Knotnowdear · 17/10/2021 13:31

I often have very early zoom calls so will get up, drag a top on, leave my pyjama bottoms on, straighten the visible part of my hair and slide foundation over the mid zone. If I'm then on Zoom calls for another 5 hours I can end up in situations where I answer the door to a delivery driver looking like a loon, but perfectly presentable on camera.

On normal not early days I get up, shower and dress as part of my morning routine.
