When you are in your round the house clothes, would you look presentable if someone knocked the door?

I just caught sight of myself in the mirror. Baggy leopard print pyjama bottoms, oversized t-shirt, fleecy top over as I am cold, sheepskin slippers, scruffy ponytail, old mascara.

If anyone called, I would panic!

I think I need to invest in some nice ‘loungewear’ or make sure I’m at least in jeans for the day even if I’m not going out.

(Note: I am clean)

I tend to wear leggings when I'm at home, change into pj's after dinner and then don't wear them in bed so it's no hardship the next day to put leggings on again. I never put my bra on if not expecting visitors or going out and if I am, I'd dress differently.

TedMullins · 16/10/2021 22:54

I wear scruffs at home (hoody/sweater, joggers probably covered in mud from the dog walk) and often take the dog out in such outfits so I wouldn’t be bothered if someone popped over and I was dressed like that. I don’t really care about stuff like that though - I wouldn’t be bothered if my flat was messy either. My bf saw me sitting around farting in my grubby joggers pretty soon into our dating. What you see is what you get with me.

HeronLanyon · 16/10/2021 23:13

ted I like ‘scruffs’. Dp and I call them ‘slops’. I’m in scruffy slops now.

Whstdoyouthink · 16/10/2021 23:22

Yes I would be, however I live in London and knocking on a door in London without notice would be the height of rudeness ;)

cleanasawhistle · 16/10/2021 23:29

I like to get in shower and get dressed soon as I get up.
Then its just leggings and a hoody if staying home.

If I wear Pjs to me that says comfort so wouldnt wear a bra ,which means I wouldnt be able to answer door because Ive had a mastectomy

saraclara · 16/10/2021 23:38

I get up, shower, put on jeans and a top, and that's what I'm in for the rest of the day.

I'm the laziest person I know, but I still wouldn't hang around the house in PJs or 'loungewear' (when did that arrive? I don't know anyone who wears it, so its prevalence on this thread bemuses me).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/10/2021 23:42

@Mantlemoose

Not bothered about answering the door though if they don't like what they see I don't care!
Me too, I love unannounced visitors and they can take me or leave me.

Usually I have a 'uniform' of yoga pants and a tunic/long t shirt so comfy but can nip to the shops too. I usually always wear minimal make up even when I'm just at home ,to me it's just part of getting dressed...or not dressed Grin

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 16/10/2021 23:44

I get up and dressed every morning and stay that way until after dinner, then I get into pjs. I don't have an in-between. Loungewear is just another expense I don't needGrin

It genuinely blows my mind that people sit around the house in Outside Clothes! 😅

If I'm in the house, I am in leggings/joggers/shorts and a crop top or massive t-shirt. And either DH's ancient comfy dressing gown or a jumper over the top. No bra, no makeup and hair usually on top of my head.

If I'm WFH and I have a Zoom call, I'll put some makeup and a proper top on, but otherwise absolutely not.

Do not care whatsoever if someone comes to the door. When I'm at home, I want to be comfy!

LalalalalalaLand123 · 17/10/2021 00:17

After having DC, breastfeeding etc I perfected my version of comfortable loungewear / athleisure clothes that were comfortable enough to wear around the house, to bed etc but presentable enough to answer the door in or wear outside the house if i needed to. It's come in handy during lockdown and working from home too.

I find it equally mind-blowing that so many people apparently experience their jeans or bras as so uncomfortable they jettison them at the first opportunity. I was trying to finish a big piece of work today, so I haven’t left the house, but I’ve been dressed since about 9 am in jeans, Uggs, a T-shirt and jumper, plus the usual underwear. I’m perfectly comfortable. I can’t help suspecting people must be wearing the wrong size if they’re so terribly uncomfortable..?
simitra · 17/10/2021 01:10

Im in my 70s and havnt worn makeup for years. I wear loose baggy kaftans around the house and garden. I dont give a tinkers cuss what anyone else thinks. Thats one of the good things about getting older. You cease to care what others think of you.

I use one of those smart ring type doorbell cameras to filter who I answer the door to. If you arnt expected or holding a parcel to deliver then you chances of my opening the door are pretty low. I usually just yell over the intercom "Whatever your selling Im not interested" which I find to be a great conversation killer.

Well I am rarely in anything even close to loungewear. We have livestock, dogs etc and are in and out from first thing until last thing at night. Some days I'm dressed more casually than others, but I'm always dressed and those clothes stay on until I head up to bed.
StarlightLady · 17/10/2021 07:34

I opt for loose round the house dresses, comfortable and practical. Knickers are something of an optional extra though. 😂

Oh yes, comfort is key! I'm always dressed (can't function in nightwear so don't get anything done) but it's jeans/loose cotton trousers and a top. Knickers aren't optional for me but a bra is! And shoes, kept for inside or out to the bin only, for the sake of my ageing plantar faciitis-prone feet. I can't imagine wearing 'office attire' at home. I recently bought a comfortable jersey dress to wear with (comfy snag) tights, and I plan to see how that goes this winter. The test will be whether I feel dressed up or just casual in it.
CatWarbler · 17/10/2021 07:45

@simitra you sound fabulous and I plan to graduate to kaftans once I no longer have dogs to walk!

DazzleDrops · 17/10/2021 07:58

I love the idea of wafting around in a kaftan! Sounds rather glam!
I'm a SAHM so in summer I stick to jersey or linen dresses and in the autumn / winter it's normally leggings or jeans with an oversized jumper or hoodie. Once I've had my evening shower it's PJ time.

I don't like staying in PJs all day, it makes me feel disorganised and lazy.

StarlightLady · 17/10/2021 08:00

@CatWarbler - Unlike my bra, If l answer the door in a dress with no knickers on, nobody knows (apart from you lot reading this thread), if I was wearing jeans with no knickers, it would be a case of pass the Canistan!

CatWarbler · 17/10/2021 08:02

Can't fault your logic @StarlightLady Grin

residentkaleidoscope · 17/10/2021 08:07

At home I'm usually in lounge wear and a cami top so I would be dressed at least but not to some peoples standards lol. I wore my slippers out on the street yesterday looking out for my son coming home and some of the neighbours looked at me but I don't care.

SoItWas · 17/10/2021 08:14

Nope, and I could care less. If someone called and planned to stay more than 5 minutes, I'd get changed, but I'd not sit fully dressed just in case.

SoItWas · 17/10/2021 08:19

For me the problem with jeans is I have thick thighs, compared to my waist, so my jeans are always tight round my thighs, but baggy round my waist, so I feel like I'm constantly hoiking them up/back into place. If I wear a belt, I get a a bulgy section below.

gogohm · 17/10/2021 08:24

Yes because once I'm dressed I'm wearing normal clothes, either a dress and leggings or jeans and a top usually - I don't own pj's

gogohm · 17/10/2021 08:26

Ps currently in dressing gown but perfectly respectable for door opening

Simonjt · 17/10/2021 08:27

No, its generally pants only at home, I do have some emergency shorts by the front door.
