Styling mom jeans if you're bigger - updating my look

sarah20212021 · 01/10/2021 21:43

I'm 2 months post baby and I have reluctantly realised I look very dated and I need help!

I'm a 14/16, fast approaching 40 and my uniform is M&S jeggings and a baggy shirt so I can BF and hide a wobbly tum. Before kids and a pandemic I wore skinny jeans, a blouse or t shirt and a fitted blazer, with ankle boots or Nikes.

Suddenly I feel like a total frumpy dinosaur, and that all my clothes signal I've lost myself and not left the house for 18 months (correct). I really want to feel more confident when seeing friends and colleagues.

I think it's the skinnies that are dating me most. But how do you style mom jeans if you're not slim and 22? Surely tucking in a T will only accentuate my tummy? How do you give yourself some shape? Any Instagrammers who are larger for inspiration?

I've seen And/Or, M&S and Mint Velvet mom jeans recommended here - what's best for a 16?
I am a size 16 and just bought the Eloise wide leg jeans from Fat Face. A lot of the reviews said they were good for curvier figures. They’re such a good fit. Hugh waisted too and not too much stretch so they hold my tummy in! www.fatface.com/women/clothing/jeans/elise-wide-leg-jeans/971049.html?dwvar_971049_color=vintage%20pale&cgid=women-clothing-jeans#start=11
Like the look of these! I'm a 12/14 - think I should size up or down? They only have a 12 left in the dark shade 😩

myadhdusername · 03/10/2021 00:58

@Ozanj is the issue you have with the Mom jeans that when you look in the mirror side on you have a little bump? I have this issue big time with Mom jeans and hadn’t thought to try a different rise!

izzybobsmum · 03/10/2021 06:23

I am a size 16 with a massive bum (so probably upper end of a 16 iyswim) and the 16 fits fine. So I reckon a 12 would be ok. They seem generously cut. I got the dark too!

lannistunut · 03/10/2021 06:37

Just placemarking for the jeans recommendations!

Gufo · 03/10/2021 09:39

Next have more sizes in stock of the dark fatface elise jeans - just ordered some thanks to the recs on this thread.

sarah20212021 · 03/10/2021 19:33

Thank you to everyone who's replied and added suggestions! I feel a lot less lonely in my quest of what on earth to wear that's flattering and a bit more updated. I'm waiting for my order to arrive in the next day or two and will update. Keep the ideas coming and if anyone is up for posting pictures of their arrivals in real life and how you're styling them that'd be amazing.

Came on here looking for the answer to this question!
I'm always stuck with footwear with jeans. I've been wearing skinnier and trainers all summer.

I'm trying to move away from skinnies but then stuck for boots to go with ankle grazers shorter style jeans

Mollymarvelous · 03/10/2021 20:21

Yep bookmarking for your review of the fat face ones x

wombforanotherone · 03/10/2021 20:58

@Baconking yes I know what you mean, shoes are a problem. I'm holding off on the fat face jeans because I realised that last year when I stopped wearing skinnies I had to wear cropped jeans to make them work with boots/not drag in the rain. What does everyone else do?

Mammyofasuperbaby · 03/10/2021 21:13

I'm having the same problem. Last baby is 14 months old, 2 c sections and massive weight gain due to hormonal problems. I'm also 2 sizes bigger in my hips than my waist upwards and very short.
I'm definitely a skinnies and t-shirt kinda person but I've recently took to turning up my jeans, wearing Chelsea boots and shirts with the sleeves rolled up. I feel confident dressed like this and it makes me feel like myself again.
Mom jeans make me look like my clothes don't fit.
Hi Op. I'm a couple of years your senior, same size and with peri in full swing.I've just bought some M and S Harper jeans. They're straight legged with a bit of stretch. I feel way more body confident than I have in ages in them www.marksandspencer.com/high-waisted-cigarette-jeans/p/clp60465497
Seconded. I have also bought the Harper jeans from M&S and also the Sofia style which is also a straight leg. They’re neat and slim fitting enough at the bum/upper thigh that plenty of my existing tops look fine not tucked in - let’s face it, no, one really tucks in a winter sweater do they? But they’re obviously not a ‘skinny’ at the bottom so don’t look too dated.

Has anyone noticed that leather skinny styles and coated style jeans still seem to be fashionable? Or is that wishful thinking? (Not that I’m sure I could get away with either…..

bellamountain · 03/10/2021 22:30

I think skinnies will make a comeback this winter, mainly for over 30s who have tried the baggier style all summer but feel they just want a smarter silhouette over the winter. Oversized blazers, chunky jumpers and biker boots or converse/vans with skinnies will look current. If wearing a mom style, I find tucking in a black t shirt much more flattering. Primark also have some nice straight leg jeans that I find more flattering than the mom jeans.

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/10/2021 11:56

All my mum friends still seem to be wearing skinnies - they're just practical when you're out in all weathers! I went to a farm with some NCT friends last week and literally all of us wore either black skinnies or leggings with our wellies. All 30+, most nearer 40.

Peggytheredhen · 04/10/2021 12:04

I met up with my most trendy friend this weekend and she wore slightly cropped slim fit black jeans, Nikes, a trendy oversized jumper and a nice jacket.

I am sat in a pair of Mom jeans like I just stepped in from 1992, and not in a good way.

Justbecauseofit · 04/10/2021 12:16

Can you wear trouser type outfits rather than jeans? I bought some work pants from gap, some lovely black and grey chequered type ones and like an earthy green trouser and they looks great and stylish just eating a casual top or tshirt with them. I think I'm starting to wear them more out of work than I am in work now!

I love how smart black trousers can look on others but I really struggle to wear them. They feel too formal, like I'm going to a job interview.

First batch arrive.
Hobbs bootcut

FFS leant on my phone and it posted.

Hobbs bootcut gloriously nostalgic. Feel like I owned them in 2003. But they feel great on and the bootcut shape feels flattering. However they're too long for my legs and look a pain to alter.

The And/ Or feel very comfortable and the baggier shape feels like something I'd wear pottering around and seeing friends. Hate the tapered at the ankle bit and prefer them rolled up.

I'm actually surprised.

Exciting! Can you post links? Will you keep either?

GemmaRuby · 06/10/2021 10:43

I also have post-baby body.
I have the M&S mom jeans and also the M&S balloon leg jeans (bit less 90s).
I wear with a t-shirt tucked in and then a checked shirt over the top which I tie at the waist. Still gives the waist silhouette without showcasing my belly rolls and rib fat :)

Mollymarvelous · 06/10/2021 12:51

I’ve been wearing mom jeans for about a year and I just hate my silhouette from the side .. the mum tum 12 months post c section is disastrous. It’s just not going anywhere . It’s like a second bottom stuck on the front ...

Anyway need to change it up . Keep the recommendations coming people!! I need you

The best thing I’ve ever done is to find someone who can alter clothes for me. I’d rather spend £10~20 for alteration and clothes that fit well than spend hours trying on many different brands etc…. Plus of course the clothes then look much much nicer on me.

If the only issue is the length, that’s what I would do tbh.

picklemewalnuts · 06/10/2021 19:12

Mom jeans are amazing on me. They look like a bit skinnies did on everyone else. It's a nice, neat leg line with the support at the tummy and actually fitting at the small of my back. I'm a pear.

sarah20212021 · 06/10/2021 19:27

I'm not sure how to do clicky links!

The And/Or jeans are these - I've worn them today! Very comfortable. Have opted to roll up the bottom. Have half tucked a loose top.

The Hobbs bootcut are gorgeous but too long on me.

Going to try the M&S bootcut - it says they're more of an ankle grazer (plus a third of the price!)
