Do I want a Barbour Jacket?

I all - I’m tempted by this: www.barbour.com/uk/barbour-hartwith-wax-jacket
Partly because my parents have Barbours that they have had for 20 years - but they actually live in the countryside. I live in the city, I’m not at all ‘county’ and this is probably more than I want to spend but I need a long coat that is completely waterproof to walk to work in (about 5 miles) - Does anyone have a Barbour and rates it? Can Any of you shopping geniuses suggest something else that would fit the bill? It needs to be warm ish, but not too warm as I walk quite fast!

Ooh that’s a nice coat… my paps has a Barbour (also lives countryside), I think it’s his 2nd in 25/30 yrs… he swears by them!

It does look lovely… I’m tempted by it now! 🥰

yesterdaygirl · 01/10/2021 08:19

I have 2 Barbour's one I brought 5yrs still going strong riding jacket type and another a 2 years ago a wax jacket type .
I live in the countryside but I have a flat in the city so my wax jacket stays there and I wear it around town so they are not just for the countryside.
I have a Barbour shop over the road from the flat so I'm going to go check this coat out now as I'm tempted too! it's lovely and I think will last for years as it's a classic parka style that never goes out of fashion love the olive colour to.

Bouncebacker · 01/10/2021 08:21

Thanks both - that’s really helpful!

I have 2 Barbours and live in the country. I keep the parka style one for early spring/autumn/winter days when we go into the city and the long riding style one for walking. They’re a great investment especially if you’re walking 5 miles to work and will keep you nice and dry as well as warm on colder days.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 01/10/2021 08:33

I tried that coat on ( but sadly hadn't checked the price and couldn't afford to buy it). It's fabulous.

Bichette · 01/10/2021 08:51

I love that coat. I have a Barbour Beadnell which I bought on eBay so don't know how old it is. It is definitely waterproof but I don't find it very warm. I don't think you'll have that problem though.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 01/10/2021 09:09

It's a nice coat but it says sponge clean only - not being able to wash it would piss me off if I was living in the countryside.

ExConstance · 01/10/2021 09:16

I have two. One is navy and longer length, I have had that for over 20 years. I have a shorter brown one that I have had for 10 years. Both get for for walks, trips to farmers market etc. Before that I had a green one that lasted for over 20 years, I had a horse then so it got very smelly and fell to pieces after regular stable and riding duties! They are never really in fashion and never really out of fashion.

Because the jackets are waxed the dirt just slides off with a sponge or washes off in rain.
hettie · 01/10/2021 09:41

Hmmme well they do last for ages but you have to rewax them...I think they're a bit heavy for city life tbh. I'd for didriksons or ilsa Jacobsen at that price point and for a city walk.... I've had a didriksons parka for 10 yes and it's still going strong....

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/10/2021 10:27

There are non Barbour waxed jackets...I saw one somewhere like Bruar. But heck if it lasts forever the Barbour is going to be a good price for wear. You can get them on ebay too.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/10/2021 10:30

That style is very nice. I have a navy John Rocha parka in that style that I wore to death. My only question would be the faux fur- is it detachable? They can start to look mangled and rubbish after a while, depending on the quality.

DameMaureen · 01/10/2021 10:40

I think something like this is less country . Loads of Barbours with discount at House of Fraser currently .

ILoveShula · 01/10/2021 10:49

I'm a barbour wearer and I wouldn't get that one @Bouncebacker., because I like the traditional ones. It does look nice though.
They are ok for wearing in a town or city but they do have their own smell, and the wax rubs off on cloth car seats, if that is an issue.

The house of fraser one isn't a wax jacket and Barbour International is a different brand.

ILoveShula · 01/10/2021 10:50

One benefit of getting a real Barbour is that you can send it back to them for reproofing (or do it yourself, of course) and repair.

I know that and that's why I am suggesting it as an alternative to a traditional wax jacket which is not really a city coat imo . Barbour International has a motorbike heritage and they do have wax jackets although sharper and more stylish and definitely less "county"
idontlikealdi · 01/10/2021 11:40

They're quite very warm, mine is too much for on tube / off tube most of the year. Very practical fir standing around at football games / horse riding lessons / dog walking in the pudding rain though and the do really last.

idontlikealdi · 01/10/2021 11:41

Spelling - sorry!

ILoveShula · 01/10/2021 11:47

@DameMaureen, yes. The person who set up Barbour International is a Barbour but the brands are different. Both brands are good.

I wouldn't get an non-barbour wax jacket. House of Bruar has nice wax jackets but the prices aren't far off the real thing. Really like HoB things though

SuperStarRose · 01/10/2021 12:05

They're great coats that you can send off and they will waterproof them again as necessary or you can do it yourself with their products. If an arm rips off they'll repair it. It's basically a coat for life.

Floisme · 01/10/2021 12:17

I've got a Margaret Howell Barbour, not because I'm a label victim (Ok I am a bit) but because I wanted waxed cotton, a hood, and a longer length (on the knee). It also has a belt so you can wear it a bit like a trench coat (although that doesn't work very well for me - makes me look a bit dumpy). It's not guaranteed waterproof but it pretty much is and it's warm but not toasty which I find is good for all but the very worst wintry days. My main complaints are that the detachable hood comes off a bit too easily (poppers) and that, for the price, I think they could have made it compatible with one of those zip in liner things. But basically I'm happy with it. That said, I can't see it on either the Barbour or MH website yet so I can't show you a link but they seem to do a collaboration every year.

I like city life and avoid the countryside wherever possible, but I do walk as much as I can.

Floisme · 01/10/2021 12:19

I also like the look of this except I don't see the point if there's no hood.

politics4me · 01/10/2021 12:35

I have an imitation barbour jacket that I bought for the price of an ordinary mac in about 2003, It is still waterproof and has almost kept its shape, I have worn it in the country and in a boat through all weathers.
Recently bought a really long unlined coat from New Forest clothing in Downton. I have bought different things from them. Nice people.

I bought this one, it looks very cool and modern

@politics4me, they're brilliant aren't they, Local agricultural suppliers are worth a try too.
