Dungarees over 50 - anybody?

rosebud5678 · 24/09/2021 12:14

My 20 yr old daughter has persuaded me to buy some denim dungarees from Pull & Bear! I like them a lot, but am now wondering if I am confident enough to actually wear them. I'm a bit worried about either (a) looking like I'm trying too hard to dress 'young' (I'm 53) or (b) Looking like a painter/decorator or someone who has come to service the boiler! At least nobody will think I'm pregnant...So tell me which ones you like wearing if you're over 50 - should I have gone for non denim for example?

I love dungarees, I’m almost 40 but hopefully will be wearing them when I’m 50. I don’t think they suit everyone but who cares what people think? I think I look ok in them.

madmumofteens · 24/09/2021 13:39

My almost 60 friend wears them and looks fab 🥰

Itsnotdeep · 24/09/2021 14:14

I have some. I don't think I look like a decorator. I'm 51. Mine are just from gap.

I don't worry about dressing young - but no one young wears dungareers anyway. They're all in tight crop tops and joggers/baggy jeans where I live.

They are a bit of a nightmare when you want to pee! Make sure you leave plenty of time , and hang onto the straps at the back before they dip into the pan!

Such happy memories of the seventies.........

ExConstance · 24/09/2021 14:27

65 I have two pairs, they suit short people as it is one colour from shoulder straps down to ankles. DH has a bit of a thing about dungarees ( The Good life, Felicity Kendal).

Wbeezer · 24/09/2021 14:31

I'm the same age as you and wearing some right now and my 79 year old Mum has been wearing them since the 1970s!

Wbeezer · 24/09/2021 14:35

@ExConstance my DH likes them too, tends to reach his hands down the loose waistband (don't worry he wouldn't do it if i objected).

Lolly49 · 24/09/2021 14:36

55 and wear them very slim and short I love them.Dh tells me I look like a Tweenie and is getting me some Clarks kickers .

YellowMonday · 24/09/2021 15:01

Go for it! I'm 35 and recently purchases pale pink dungarees - my partner was horrified but I get so many compliments haha.

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 15:32

I wear them a lot. I usually wear the loose ones and you don't have to undo the straps to go to the loo. With ones that are less loose, just undo one strap.

The only thing I find is that sometimes things fall out of the bib packet when I go to the loo. Only on the floor though, but don't put a £££ phone in there.#

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 15:42

Wear your jumper under the dungarees not over them. Smile

ShrikeAttack · 24/09/2021 18:43

I don't wear dungarees, I hate them.

Buuuut, if you like the buggers, then wear them. Much better to be confident and happy with your sartorial choices and stride out with joy than wear stuff just because you feel you 'should'.

TollgateDebs · 24/09/2021 18:49

59 - two pairs and a chambray jumpsuit, love them and with a jacket can look like a straight legged jean and much more comfortable around the waist! Wear what makes you happy and there are no age labels in adult clothing, so go for it!

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 18:55

Mid 50s. Shortish and slight.

2 boilersuits 1 navy, one black
Several dungarees - brightly patterned, chambray, denim (mid-blue) dark denim, needle cord, short & faded ...

Several pinafores

Usually get compliments.

I also wear the sort of dresses that are loose and you just pull on

rosebud5678 · 24/09/2021 19:23

Thanks everyone - I'm going to keep them Smile

If they are the basic ones they are great @rosebud5678.

I'd wear a top underneath though.

rosebud5678 · 24/09/2021 20:11

Thanks for the recommendation - and yes, I was going to wear a top underneath!

i think that dungarees appeal to the middle aged who don't give a monkeys what others think, or to teenagers.

I remember being in London early summer a few years ago and they seemed to be worn by lots of young women. Can't remember if it was 2 or 3 yrs ago

SirVixofVixHall · 24/09/2021 20:42

My lovely friend is in her seventies and wears them. She looks gorgeous! She is a very stylish dresser, makes a lot of her own clothes and always looks great.

Lottapianos · 24/09/2021 20:49

The writer Jane Fallon (Ricky Gervais' partner) recently turned 60 and shared a photo of herself in dungarees. She looks flipping marvellous. You're never too old for clothes you enjoy and feel good in

ScumbagDave · 24/09/2021 20:54

I love them on other people and have definitely seen women who look 50+ wearing them and looking amazing.

Unfortunately I look a bit like Mr Tumble / and overgrown toddler / heavily pregnant in them Sad.

Glad you're keeping them!

highwoodwitch · 24/09/2021 20:57

I love denim but find jeans uncomfortable so dungarees are the solution.
I have several pairs from Next.
I am old and really don't care what anyone thinks.
I wear them with biker jackets too and I love them.
Highly recommended.

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 21:12

I have a pair from Next and I've had compliments.
I got them in a charity shop for £1
They're the chambray ones - not really chambray but a very light denim. They are probably the least nice ones I have but I wear them a lot.

Durbeyfield · 24/09/2021 21:14

Hell yes. I’m 53 and love my Toast dungarees.

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 21:29

not offensive
