What colour accessories with this vintage dress?

Oh wise style mavens please help me. I found this 1950s silk dress to wear for a wedding lunch that I'm going to in early October but I don't have anything to go with it yet.

I definitely need shoes - preferably something with a strap and not too vertiginous; it's years since I've worn heels. I probably need a shawl, a jacket or a cardi. And maybe a handbag.

Should I double down on the blue theme? I already have blue hair. Or go for a contrast colour?

It is knee length. In October, do I go nude tights or coloured?

Thank you!

Lovely dress! I would go with red, can you do a high heel?

FflosFfantastig · 19/09/2021 16:08

It's a gorgeous dress! I also thought red would look nice with it.

ManyManyBiscuits · 19/09/2021 17:07

Definitely can't do pointy-heeled court shoes but could do wedges or a heeled Mary-Jane shoe.

Cherry red? Or something more to the Burgundy end?

These www.joebrowns.co.uk/vintage-flare-shoes-kc175

Or these www.joebrowns.co.uk/dance-hall-tbar-shoes-kc172 I can see going with your lovely dress OP

Noshowwithoutpunch · 19/09/2021 17:15

I was thinking of a pale pink but maybe a dark red is more suited to the season.

Time40 · 19/09/2021 17:18

I'd go with blue, or failing that, light grey.

DialSquare · 19/09/2021 17:33

I bought these for a wedding a few years ago to match a cobalt blue dress. I didn't want to spend too much as I'd probably only wear them once. They were very comfortable and easy to walk in.

@Snooks1971

I love both of those. I think maybe the dark red ones then. And I've got a handbag in about the right shade already.

It's not a super glam outfit so I think a cardi would make it too boring but I think it might look more finished with maybe a pashmina? Or a jacket?

It's been such a long time since I've been out.

Ooh, those are nice too but sadly they don't have the blue in my size.

Those Joe Brown blue shoes would look lovely, in which case I would double down on blue for jacket too, but the bag could be a pop of colour - mustard?

wombforanotherone · 19/09/2021 17:37

I would say orange shoes would look beautiful with the blue in that dress, I definitely wouldn't go the burgundy end of red.

I'd then bring the orange in somewhere else, maybe on your jacket bag, or orange necklace or something.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/09/2021 17:39

Such a lovely dress. I'd go for navy shoes and bag but brighter jewellery. Or maybe something like this laveintinueve.com/shop/en/shoes/2647-magnolia-blue-and-brown.html

JaninaDuszejko · 19/09/2021 17:43

Agree orange would look amazing but I'd say either your shoes or your bag in orange then all other accessories blue or a neutral (I'd consider white, gold and silver a neutral, but don't wear black with this dress).

Neveranynamesleft · 19/09/2021 17:44

Definitely go for a contrast colour for shoes and bag , orange, green red or even yellow. Blue shoes would be too much blue imo, but a blue shawl/ pashmina would look nice with the contrasting shoes and bag. Hope that makes sense !

cheesyunyin · 19/09/2021 17:51

Id go for boring black. Youre more likely to find something comfortable like a wedge shoe. And more likely to wear it again

If you buy orange shoes, will you wear again?

Neveranynamesleft · 19/09/2021 17:58

A contrasting colour can brighten up many different outfits. Dont be afraid of a splash of colour!

BakeOffRewatch · 19/09/2021 18:01

The burgundy shoes that @Snooks1971 posted, will keep it the right side of stylish vs costume. It will really ground the dress and allow it to shine.

AdelindSchade · 19/09/2021 18:15

I think shoes in red or orange shades are actually pretty versatile as can wear with blue, navy, black, grey, white cream, khaki or denim. I have worn to death a pair of red shoes I have.

ManyManyBiscuits · 19/09/2021 18:19

Hmm. I like the orange idea but nice orange shoes seem more difficult to come by.

This tone seems good but it's a Pinterest picture and I can't work where they actually come from.

I like the idea of keeping the blue pashmina that I already have but going with bright shoes and bag. I may also still try those Joe Browns. I can always send some things back.

Jewellery wise, because the neck is high, I was just thinking bracelet?

Maybe try the terms tan and caramel instead?

Collectif are in the style of the shoe you want. I quite like this one www.collectif.co.uk/shoes-c68/pumps-c205

I think that mustard might be a colour you could use again - eg with black or navy - without jumping out at you as much as red or orange. Perhaps something like these

With a small cross body bag (so you don't need to juggle a drink and a clutch) like this

I agree that a necklace is unlikely to work with that neckline but you could add a brooch if you wanted a bit more than just a bracelet - you could channel the Queen and wear something just above a breast although a brooch on the end of the collar bone - so just below the collar - can also look elegant with that style of dress. Something like this
