What colour accessories with this vintage dress?

Oh wise style mavens please help me. I found this 1950s silk dress to wear for a wedding lunch that I'm going to in early October but I don't have anything to go with it yet.

I definitely need shoes - preferably something with a strap and not too vertiginous; it's years since I've worn heels. I probably need a shawl, a jacket or a cardi. And maybe a handbag.

Should I double down on the blue theme? I already have blue hair. Or go for a contrast colour?

It is knee length. In October, do I go nude tights or coloured?

Thank you!

The colour scarf/shawl in the blue you are holding looks a good colour. You could go with a little fitted cardigan in the same sort of blue...something 40’s/50’s style..look great if it had little red flowers embroidered on the front too...shoes red. You have a great figure..so it would look fab ♥️

I was thinking if you want to go subtle, silver shoes and a baby blue fitted cardigan. I had a dress that was flowered with a similar blue hue.
Have you thought about boots?

A faux fur shrug / cape could be gorgeous.

@RiverSkater

Lovely dress! I would go with red, can you do a high heel?
Yes! Red. I love that dress

@ManyManyBiscuits

Definitely can't do pointy-heeled court shoes but could do wedges or a heeled Mary-Jane shoe.

Cherry red? Or something more to the Burgundy end?

I have had the first and third ones on the first column and had lots of positive comments. They are quite cheap though and not very robust. The come up small but are surprisingly comfortable.

I like the idea of silver shoes and bag.

Cherry red…. I like the one with the flower on the side of the strap & the not so high but still elegant slightly chunky heel. Quite similar in style (from Irregular Choice) to shoes I’ll be wearing to a friend’s wedding in October with a navy & cream polka dots 50’s style dress. I really only wear flat boots & shoes nowadays and do know that this style of shoe is comfortable to wear all day.🙂

I would look for 1940's style accessories to go with your dress. How are you going to do your hair & makeup? I don't know if full vintage would work or if modern accessories would overpower the beauty in the dress.

ManyManyBiscuits · 21/09/2021 18:32

Thank you everyone. I'm going to go into town on Friday and have a look for red or orange shoes. With silver as a plan b.

When you say 'how are you doing your hair and make up' that suggests a level of style and beauty skill that somewhat surpasses what I'm capable of!

I will definitely have hair and makeup that's as far I can commit.

Please update up with a photo of your complete outfit on the special day.🙂

Fluffypinkpoppet · 21/09/2021 23:26

Yes...definitely need an update.
I did have a chuckle when you said you will have hair and make up...I can be like that too. Good luck with your shopping trip. 🌸

@cheesyunyin

Id go for boring black. Youre more likely to find something comfortable like a wedge shoe. And more likely to wear it again

If you buy orange shoes, will you wear again?

Black would look rubbish, not just boring.

If you want to be practical, navy, or white would look nice and be very easy to buy and reuse.

I think a bright fire engine red, orange or yellow could look nice but I think you need two items (maybe three) that use that colour with the rest being blue or white, otherwise it looks a bit random. Something like shoes and a bold necklace, or bag and jacket/cardi/wrap.

ManyManyBiscuits · 13/10/2021 17:27

So I have a confession. I went out to buy the shoes to go with the dress.... and accidentally bought another dress.

I thought the colours would be better for the autumn wedding. So here's what I ended up wearing.

It was a very small wedding and the Bride and Groom are having a big party next April, so I will still be able to wear the original vintage dress then.

Thank you for all your help, it won't be wasted - I still need shoes!
