Clever buys for an instant wardrobe update?

FusionChefGeoff · 11/09/2021 19:42

At the beginning of the summer, I accidentally bought 2 things which completely changed my wardrobe - a pair of white Nike trainers and some high waisted denim shorts.

Suddenly, every boring, dated T shirt I owned looked amazingly on trend tucked into my shorts.

And every crappy pair of shorts / dress / trousers looked bang up to date with my jazzy new trainers on!

What should I buy this winter that will have the same magic effect on my very ancient clothes?!!?

Following with interest!

Lace up black hiker boots
High waisted jeans or trousers - flared or straight leg

Sickoffamilydrama · 11/09/2021 23:32

I've seen these style shoes and boots on a few places and on influencers.

Have bought a pair of flat lace up patent boots to perform this same magic!
Should go with everything

Midgeymoo12 · 12/09/2021 00:31

Feeling pleased with my chunky doc marten Chelsea boots!

Niconacotaco · 12/09/2021 00:39

@SoLongFurlough which ones? I need new boots!

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 12/09/2021 08:35

My Dr Martens Sinclairs (the soft leather ones) did this for me last winter.

PersonaNonGarter · 12/09/2021 08:38

Chunky boots
Baggy, unstructured blazer

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 12/09/2021 08:40

Big chunky Chelsea boots, the more rugged the better.

Wearing tonal colours or monochrome.

I have a great pair of high waisted wide leg trousers. They're great but they haven't updated my wardrobe, none of my old tops or shoes work with them! I'm really struggling for anything to wear with them.
FusionChefGeoff · 12/09/2021 09:28

I've been flirting with DMs for a couple of years now so maybe this is the time!!! Chunkier the better by the sounds of it.

I've been looking a the cherry red but is it black I need??

Those white boots are horrific! 😂

How about a new coat? No idea what's 'in' but there are some really nice ones starting to come into the shops.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/09/2021 09:34

I bought some slim flare jeans and they feel really fresh and nice to wear, after so long in skinnies.

SoLongFurlough · 12/09/2021 09:34

@Niconacotaco they were only from New Look they had 25% off so think they were less than 30 quid!

I got something like these. Maybe slightly flatter. So please with them - really versatile with jeans, trousers or dresses

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie where were your slim flares from please? I can only seem to find baggy flares atm.

MrsKDB · 12/09/2021 10:15

Agree with lace up bikers. Grenson nanettes are the absolute bomb imo.

I’d like a slouchy cashmere jumper in faded maroon. Tonal rather than berry.

I always think a great bag has a big impact in AW too

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 12/09/2021 14:00

I would say

A chunky, fairly loose, striped cotton jumper
Chunky loafers
Leather/faux leather trousers (not leggings)
A quilted (not puffer) jacket (either khaki or patchwork, depending on your style)
A knit vest or waistcoat

Some may be harder to pull off than others Smile

Ellllle · 12/09/2021 14:49

I bought and returned so many chunky boots last winter. It's not an easy look to pull off. I think you need to have great legs.

Ellllle · 12/09/2021 14:51

Agree with everything on @BlairWaldorfLovesShopping 's list except for waistcoat... nope

Ellllle · 12/09/2021 14:53

Sorry also to answer the question: cropped knitwear (to wear with high waisted jeans). Instantly more current.

Wynston · 12/09/2021 15:11

I want lovely chunky dms.....ive found the ones. However I wear chinos and mom jeans so they just don't look right with them??

Floisme · 12/09/2021 15:33

No I think Blair's onto something. I've recently got a men's suit waistcoat out of storage - hadn't worn it since the 90s but I've machine washed it (100% wool but it survived) and I think it's looking good again.
BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 12/09/2021 16:17

Hehe @Ellllle I meant a button front knit vest which is hopefully less scary than an actual waistcoat… but also agree with @Floisme that they are meant to be coming back.
(I’m not brave enough to try either!)

It's not a look for a mum tum, it seems. Grin Thankfully I can probably pull off the lace up hiking style boot. Affording them is a different matter.
