It struck me this morning that after all these years I might be putting my mascara on incorrectly

I don't think it's the mascara- although i am trying out a new one- I normally stick with tubing ones.
It's just, mascara always clumps on me, always.
I just assumed it was the mascara( It could be) but it could also me.

How do you manage to layer mascara without it looking crappy?

@Magicpaintbrush what serum do you use? Is it expensive?

KickAssAngel · 09/09/2021 20:38

be careful with serum - It can change the color of your eyes

BigButtons · 09/09/2021 21:34

@KickAssAngel

Years ago I used bitmatoprost( sourced at a reasonable price). Luckily my eye colour didn’t change. My lashes were amazing though.

I always apply mascara looking down into a mirror. That way I find it easier to start right at the base of your lashes. Also, I find a lot of people neglect those lashes at the very outer corners and these are generally the longest ones. They can give a false lash effect,

catfunk · 09/09/2021 22:13

I find that I have to put the second coat on straight away whilst it's still a bit damp.... layering it over dried ones goes clumpy and spidery

catfunk · 09/09/2021 22:14

I also use a lash Curler and warm it with a hair dryer first

justasking111 · 09/09/2021 22:22

Joan Collins make up

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 09/09/2021 22:58

Use an eye lash primer!!! Best invention ever. Makes cheapest mascara look amazing and no clumps

DukeOfEarlGrey · 09/09/2021 23:04

@Bagelsandbrie

When I worked for Clinique and then Chanel we were always told to zig zag the wand through the lashes and then apply a second coat almost straight away whilst still damp so it doesn’t clump. I think some of the volume mascaras are dreadful for clumping, I actually think it’s better to just use a basic high street brand and apply a few coats. My favourite is Max Factor 2000 calorie.
I came on to say exactly this - key for me is to apply the second coat whilst the first one is wet (so I do left eye x two coats, then move to right eye) and find the right mascara. I'm 40 and in approx. 25 yrs of mascara wearing have never found anything that trumps MF 2000 calorie.
Hakunapotato · 09/09/2021 23:09

Estée Lauder primer underneath (the white one not the black one) but I actually don’t think you’re supposed to layer tubing mascaras.

Hakunapotato · 09/09/2021 23:12

Maybe just when wet

I use a spooly to separate the lashes after I've put mascara on. Works super well and makes them fluffy and rather than spidery!

SwedishEdith · 09/09/2021 23:18

My only mascara tip is to remember to do the top/reverse side of your top lashes as well. Kirsty Young was having hers done on The Clothes Show and the make-up artist pointed out that that's bit other people see. Probably really obvious but I still think of it every time I put mascara on.

Bobmonkfish · 09/09/2021 23:20

I can't really describe what I do but am fascinated that there is more than one way to put on mascara.

I used Max Factor for years but now used Diego Dalla Palma which I don't need more than one coat of.

RosesandPumpkins · 09/09/2021 23:28

I do it vertically too

rageagainstbing · 09/09/2021 23:29

I look down into the mirror and brush through the top and underneath pretty quickly. If I need more, I don't wait for it to dry.

Also I use a different brush to the one my mascara comes with. I prefer the shorter rubber bristles to the big brush but the mascara I like at the moment has a massive brush that makes me end up with mascara over my eyelids. It works a lot better with the thinner brush and I prefer it now with the volume rather than lengthening formula.

OMG... wait a minute... you've just BLOWN MY MIND a little...

Does one put mascara on the top of one's lashes above, or the bottom but which faces out and down??? I'm suddenly questioning my whole life! ShockShockShock

SwedishEdith · 09/09/2021 23:54

OMG... wait a minute... you've just BLOWN MY MIND a little

Ha ha. Both sides - above and below of the top set. Otherwise, you may be left with powder showing on the top when you have your eyes closed/lowered.

Velveteena · 10/09/2021 00:09

I prefer the shorter rubber bristles to the big brush but the mascara

Me too. The short rubber bristles are far better for making sure you get every lash. L'Oreal Telescopic is my all time fave and has a brush like that. I've tried the Lancome ones as they're often recommended but they're not as good as Telescopic imo.

paisley256 · 10/09/2021 00:13

I always come back to MaxFactor 2000 calorie too and I've tried loads.

KhoshkaKatya · 10/09/2021 00:17

Wipe off excess mascara, zig zag at roots, quick second coat on upper outer lashes in the corner only.

BigButtons · 10/09/2021 04:43

When I was at school many centuries ago we were given interview advice. One tip has always stayed with me and that was to coat both sides of our lashes because if we didn’t the interviewer would see that we couldn’t be bothered and not give us the job!
I used to do it then I read somewhere that it can weigh the lashes down.

I usually use no 7 tubing one. The other day I bought maybeline sky high. It’s ok for staying power but it’s very gloopy and sticks my lashes together even more.
2000 calorie mascara you say?

ThankYouDebbie · 10/09/2021 06:39

I always do the top first . So many people don't bother and it really shows if you have pale hair.

Magicpaintbrush · 10/09/2021 08:58

BigButtons - no problem, the eyelash serum I use is by Maycreate (link below) it's just one I bought from Amazon and has turned out to be great, it's £13.99. I don't use it religously, probably twice or three times a week and it's still made my lashes grow noticeably longer. My eye colour has not changed at all I'm pleased to report.

BigButtons · 10/09/2021 13:03

@Magicpaintbrush thanks for that. I have ordered itSmile
