Day time dresses and white trainers - what do you wear on your feet?

I met up with my friends for brunch recently and we were all wearing dresses with white trainers. I hadn't realised how much of a "thing" it was so when we wandered around town afterwards I noticed that most women in dresses were also wearing white trainers! Is it because we're used to comfy wfh slippers and trainers are more comfy than sandals/flip flops? What do you wear with your day dresses?

Grey converse, birkenstocks or dm's

ActonSquirrel · 05/09/2021 11:16

Inspired by this...I have a voucher for £40 that can be spent in schuh. Will put towards a pair of trainers/ sandals / shoes.

I have white trainers. What does anyone suggest for something else that will go with dresses?

KarenofSparta · 05/09/2021 11:18

@LegendaryReady

Trainers, not necessarily white. I don't do it because it's a "thing" I do it because, thank god, it's become socially acceptable for women to wear comfortable shoes.

When I was first on MN there was horror at the thought of any woman wearing trainers at any time except for exercise Grin

My thoughts exactly!

Saying that I'm getting excited at all the incoming Autumn boots options ... 👢

Nitgel · 05/09/2021 11:23

sandals or espadrilles

Do people really buy new boots every winter?

Mine last for years. I only buy new boots if they wear out or fall apart.

Depends how much walking you do.

I don't have a car so mine take a battering as I walk everywhere

RampantIvy · 05/09/2021 13:01

I do a lot of walking, but wear walking shoes. I have just replaced a pair. I WFH or drive to the office when required. I would take public tansport there, but there isn't any.

ActonSquirrel · 05/09/2021 13:05

I commute to the office on public transport. Lots of walking in London as sometimes quicker to walk. I wear boots for it as its cold and change to heels in the office.

That's why your boots last then you wear walking shoes or drive 🤷🏼‍♀️

It didn't occur to you some people wear them more

I usually buy a new pair. But I don't chuck the others out, I just have different pairs for different outfits. Black, tan, ox blood, smart, Dr Matens etc.

I like boots 😂

RampantIvy · 05/09/2021 13:11

I also walk a lot in my boots. I am just not heavy on any of my footwear, hence most of my shoes, boots and sandals last for years. The walking shoes I have just turfed out (and had a lot of wear) were at least 10 years old. My fit flop flip flops are 13 years old, my chelsea boots are at least 5 years old. My flat sandals are 8 years old (although they do look a bit scruffy now).

All of the above have been worn and walked in a lot.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 05/09/2021 13:11

@Iamclaracowbell

Birkenstocks or Teva flatform sandals. I think the white trainer thing has been done to death and is a bit twee tbh
Totally agree it feels really dated now, at first it was a bit different but now it’s utterly ubiquitous and well past it’s sell by date, comfy though, so the look will stick around for practicality but not for style.
Givemethatknife · 05/09/2021 13:12

Trainers and dresses predate lockdown. Flat shoes have become much more popular in the last decade and (some) trainers are very comfortable. Sandals are a slightly different look - either more formal or sweet.

Cazzovuoi · 05/09/2021 13:13

White trainers, light Toms (I have 5738282 pairs), Sketchers yoga foam sandals which are the comfiest I’ve ever had.

In winter I wear Knee high boots, ankle boots and then Ugg snow boots when it snows, which is a lot.

HarryBoa · 05/09/2021 13:20

I don't really wear trainers other than to work out in, but I would wear white plimsolls occasionally if I could find ones soft enough. Every time I've tried some on they've been hard which feels like it's missing the point to me!

You do realise this is S&B? Grin. We're allowed to like new boots.

Saying that, I wear my favourites to the death.

GoingOutOutNEVER · 05/09/2021 13:36

I wear lilac trainers with whatever kind of dress I wear and I wear them with odd socks (never matched ones) that peep over the top of my ankle so are on display.. I’m a rogue human Grin

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 05/09/2021 13:46

Why is wearing trainers and dresses 'a bit twee'? Hmm

Exactly. Are we not allowed comfy foot wear?!
AnnaDyne · 05/09/2021 14:13

I wear birkenstocks or chunky sandals.

Not white trainers as I think too many people are wearing them.

(and yes, I buy new boots every winter!).

This.

I love that it is now deemed acceptable to wear comfortable trainers with a dress in the summer.
I simply can't do heels and many 'slip on' type shoes.

RampantIvy · 05/09/2021 14:26

So do I. Although, I still can't find anything as comfy as my Skechers Go Walks.

bellabride · 05/09/2021 14:29

What about black tights with the white trainers: dotty, flower- patterned sheer ones?

Iamclaracowbell · 05/09/2021 14:55

It was me that said this...I don't think trainers and dresses is twee in itself, at all, it's the 'floral / dotty dress + white trainers' uniform that you see groups of women wearing en masse that I think is a bit twee. I'm all for trainers, have loads of them and do wear them with dresses. It's just that particular combo that I don't think has any edge at all
midsomermurderess · 05/09/2021 15:07

I saw a group of mid-thirties women at the bus stop recently, all wearing just that, dresses and white trainers. Like someone had passed a sumptuary law. I see it's comfortable and easy, I'd be a bit embarrassed though.
Anyway, a variety of sandals for me.
