How old are you?

I think in the green or the burgundy it looks like something a person of about 60 would wear. The black, maybe a 40 year old would wear.

DeepNorthFarmGardening · 01/09/2021 20:38

I'm struggling to see how Barbour could look chavvy.

In terms of it ageing you, it depends what you wear it with surely?

Scabetty · 01/09/2021 20:40

The coat won’t make you chavy or aged on its own. What you already look like and how you wear it will. Nicer coats out there imo.

FlibbertyGiblets · 01/09/2021 20:41

I don't understand what you mean by chavvy, I understand the horror younger people have of older women sarcastic and being thought of or viewed as an older woman is a terrible, terrible situation.

Galaxyinmypocket · 01/09/2021 20:45

Barbour jackets are a bit dated imo. I agree with @Scabetty, there are some lovely jackets out there that are nicer than these.

Scabetty · 01/09/2021 20:49

If you specifically want Barbour look at the fitted ones fir a younger, less country look. Country in city can look as you describe - frumpy.

GivemeGinandTonic · 01/09/2021 20:49

Waxed ones are classic, those quilted style ones I think have a chavvy look, purely because there were so many fakes / knock offs of them about a few years ago.
This is likely not relative to every area of the UK tho…

Foreverinthenineties · 01/09/2021 20:50

Only as I read somewhere here that Barbour lately became quite chavvy.
Perhaps it is just a certain styles.
Yep, I am 40 this year I know some clothing can have ageing effect.
I like look of this jacket, the burgundy is the best really.
Not that keen on the green one or black.

I was in the branch in Long Acre in London today coincidentally. I tried on several different styles including the one the OP has identified. To be honest several that I tried were quite ageing including some of the waxed ones. My preference was the Cavalry Polar Quilt style which was a bit more fitted and stylish IMO. Didn't get it as we were on our way to the theatre but will definitely be going back for another look.

Scabetty · 01/09/2021 21:08

I definitely prefer the cavalry @NeedWineNow mentioned Smile

Mrgrinch · 01/09/2021 21:13

Buy what you like, but don't expect one of these to keep you warm. About as warm as a plastic raincoat if I was to compare it.

batmanladybird · 01/09/2021 21:18

Where do you live?
Chavvy in London imo or any where suburban
If you live in a road with no street lights then maybe

Atalune · 01/09/2021 21:20

Bad jacket. Don’t buy.

Looks like a cotton traders one!

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/09/2021 21:24

Some are quite frumpy but there are a few more stylish Barbours if you hunt around. Alexa Chung has done several collaborations with Barbour and one of them featured a black waxed jacket that was basically a fitted short trench coat. Looked fabulous and very chic, so sold out really quickly. I'm not an Alexa fan but she was bang on the money with that jacket.

sskanky · 01/09/2021 21:28

Ageing AND chavvy

TheWholeWorld · 01/09/2021 21:30

Frumpy/dated I'm afraid. That style of jacket was everywhere about 3 or 4 years ago.

RainingYetAgain · 01/09/2021 21:42

I'm in my mid 60s and think that that jacket is too old for me!
Mind you, I have a couple of waxed ones- one is holey and well worn, I took it in to be repaired and came out with a new one but still in a traditional style. They are practical and windproof.I've got a furry lining when its cold. I live in a place with no street lights and few paved paths, but Barbour isn't for anywhere smart or formal.

TolkiensFallow · 01/09/2021 21:46

I just don’t think it’s a very nice coat

ZednotZee · 01/09/2021 21:46

My twelve year old has the black one.

They are for school girls around here. Sorry.

Foreverinthenineties · 01/09/2021 21:57

@HundredMilesAnHour I know which one you talking about with Alexa. Is it the one called Acorn?
I had that one some months ago but returned it as it looked too boxy on me, I looked like a man in it- it was not for me.
I got the wax version of the one I posted above- I love that one very much so I was looking into a warmer version.
I randomly tried this one on once in House of Fraser and I liked how it felt( it’s warm inside as it has thick fleece lining)

@NeedWineNow
I just looked the Cavalry up and I think it would look too short on me, I need a coat a bit longer to cover my bum.
I tried the one I posted on briefly before and just like you I keep thinking about it since, plus I already have the wax version so I like that style.

I’m just not sure about the diamond quilting..

UnfinishedBunting · 01/09/2021 22:08

Oh, I've got the cavalry one! It is quite nice, I should probably wear it more often.

No, it's not the Acorn, it's the Agatha.

This is the only pic I could find. It doesn't fit the model well. It looks much better in real life!
