I’m in love with a too expensive jumper

And I can’t get it out of my head.

If I owned it my life would be better and winter would be full of wonderful crisp walks.

Sigh

Tbh where I live in Ireland you can get a lot of jumpers like that, but half the price.

Standún is great, but there are loads of others with a bit of googling.

MrsFin · 02/09/2021 08:23

You could knit that for £30! Fisherman's Rib is an easy stitch.

Put fisherman's jumper in your search and then have a nosey at what shows up.

Just looking at it makes me itchy and like I can't breathe.. nevermind the price.Grin

I think the neck would be annoying.

Mankyfruitbowl · 02/09/2021 08:31

@CurlyhairedAssassin

My immediate thought was that you ask a good knitter to knit you one.

Then I remembered what would have happened if teenaged me had asked my nan. First she'd ring me and say "Barb couldn't find quite that colour wool so she got the next closest thing, is that ok?" Me: "Er, that's great, Nan!"

Result attached. She meant well and I appreciated the effort but I never asked her to make me a jumper I'd seen in a magazine ever again, bless her. Grin

@CurlyhairedAssassin have I misunderstood, or is the picture you in your knitted-by-nan jumper? Because it's blimmin' fabulous! The olive green colour with that lipstick. Lovely!

John lewis seem to have quite a few in too.

You might find a jumper on this website that might be more to your liking.

Also, don't think of the initial price. Think of the price per wear. If you wear it a lot, then it makes sense to pay that for a garment. If you leave it in your wardrobe a lot and don't wear it, then it's very expensive.

Floisme · 02/09/2021 08:50

I'm a Celtic & Co fan although I've not bought it for a few years because their stuff lasts so well I haven't needed to. The last jumper I bought from them was in geelong lambswool which is soft and has worn very well. (I also don't need to wash it very often - one of the advantages of pure wool.)

It's an expensive jumper op, even by their prices but I would imagine there's good reason for it. I'm afraid none of the links I've opened look similar to me - hard to be sure without seeing them all for real but the shape looks different.

AlbertBridge · 02/09/2021 08:50

I bought a lovely high-neck grey jumper in H&M last week. It came with a hideous pearl brooch on the collar but I just removed it and TA DA, jumper heaven.

I'll see if I can find a link.

I'm currently listing after the rollneck jumper she wears on the first episode of Vigil. That's lush.

AlbertBridge · 02/09/2021 08:52

Yes, here's the H&M one. It's lovely on. The brooch just unclips and goes immediately into your nearest bin.

idontlikealdi · 02/09/2021 08:53

When would you wear it? I have a couple of much coveted jumpers like that but I can't wear them they're just too hot, or it's raining and you can't get a coat over them. I'm in the SE maybe if you're in Scotland it could work.

I have this jumper and I'm not surprised it's on eBay. It's terrible the sleeves are massive and also too long, you wouldn't get coat on over it.

I bought the oatmeal coloured linen cardigan from Celtic and where the sleeves are sewn on to the body there's a really hard ridge which makes it uncomfortable.

I had the Toscana jacket and there was so much fur in the sleeves they rode up. Celtic haven't mastered sleeves, I never have a problem with any other company and don't have fat arms.

[quote Coniferhedge]I’ll see your expensive lovely jumper and raise you mine. Definitely too expensive for me! Shock

I'm sorry but that looks like something a child/adult learning how to knit would end up with. And nearly £400 for it. They are having a laugh. They are really, genuinely, sitting in their board room laughing at anyone who spends that much on a jumper. Rubbing their hands together (with sanitiser applied of course) watching that lovely money rolling in!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/09/2021 09:42

@HostessTrolley

If I wanted to knit something like that but be able to chuck it in the washing machine, what kind of wool would I need to buy? 🤔
I recommend Drops Merino Extra Fine, it's washable, feels gorgeous and all the Drops yarns are very good value for money as they are generally high quality. I use the Merino Extra Fine, the Baby Alpaca Silk, Paris and Bomull Lin quite a bit. Drops

You could also try Cascade Superwash, it comes in a different weights and the DK has tons of colours. Cascade Superwash

banivani · 02/09/2021 09:45

I was going to recommend the Irish Jumper sellers. They've modernised/bastardised (depending on your POV) the traditional wool jumper and knit them in merino so very non-itchy. Lots of offers often! Look at this, it's like autumn leaves fgs www.aran.com/womens-merino-fair-isle-sweater-with-pockets?setCurrencyId=3 (pockets are a bummer though)

Would like to say that surely no-one washes a wool jumper more than once in a blue moon. So it's only faffy now and then.

I have a massive Irish Aran-ish men's jumper in a gorgeous Donegal-flecked wool I scored in a charity shop for 9 euro. It need specific weather conditions to be wearable but on those days it shines. Sadly the high neck is itchy as hell. I put a silk scarf on underneath and am contemplating lining it with silk permanently - it is annoying and you must bear it in mind before committing all your cash.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 02/09/2021 10:02

Wait for the sale, will be cold enough to get some wear out of it by then, if be too hot in autumn for that and jackets wouldn’t fit over it very well. Don’t like the green either…
It’s lovely otherwise long as it’s not scratchy

leavesthataregreen · 02/09/2021 10:05

This is out of stock but says it's coming soon and it's £7.

goose1964 · 02/09/2021 10:13

This cheaper but similar, OK it's men's and not such a nice colour . Wool jumpers are itchy though www.irishinspiration.com/sweaters/polo-neck/fishermans-rib

LegendaryReady · 02/09/2021 10:17

Buy it and wear it loads Far better value than 2-3 cheaper versions you don't love quite so much. We only need one big jumper.

SwedishEdith · 02/09/2021 10:39

Knitting that with merino wool would take ages as you need quite fine needles. That's assuming OP can knit, of course. I can but I know I'd get to making the neck -after months-- and then cock that bit up.

Some of the alternatives being suggested are polyester as well - even more boiling hot. At least for wool, you tend to wear something underneath so you don't need wash them that much anyway. But thanks for some of the links of here to other suppliers. Surprised I like the look of the Superdry one - have never looked on there.

Agree re wool prices, I did a small adult jumper last year in a bog standard acrylic blend and that was £28 of wool. To use something decent would be at least double.

Wbeezer · 02/09/2021 11:33

There's a nice chunky 100% wool cable jumper o the Plumö website. It's £98, quite fancy it myself.
The knitting pattern i linked to up thread is not too expensive as it's knitted in Alafloss Lopi which is relatively cheap but it is a bit itchy until its been washed a few times.
