You don’t have to be super trendy to wear jeans and Converse ffs, it’s almost a uniform round here, it’s what everyone wears - with the ubiquitous Breton top.

I was in a gallery in London yesterday and from the neck down it would have been impossible to guess anyone’s age. Every woman was wearing cotton or linen trousers, some kind of top and flat shoes or trainers, ages ranged from mid 20s to mid 70s. The days of the pleated skirt, beige anorak and cauliflower perm are over!

I agree. My comment about 'super trendy' was more in reaction to the idea that there was no difference between how 75 year-olds generally dress and how much younger people dress. Jeans and Converse, as I said, are fairly age neutral, but yes they're also pretty fashion neutral. I wear them a lot and I'm not fashionable.

Look, all I was trying to say really was that I don't think people should be harangued for ageism for acknowledging actual, observable and well-known differences in the ways that different age groups typically (but not universally) dress, unless they are doing so in a rude or offensive way. Neither do I think it's unreasonable for people to talk about choosing outfits based partly on not wanting to look as though they belong to a different age group.

It's a shame this thread has got so tetchy.

@ThisIsNotAGloveSong I do like the dress. Aesthetically I like the idea of being an eccentric artist wandering the countryside in £500 outfits like a Toast catalogue outtake. Although I am in my 40s (;-)) I do work as a creative and could probably vaguely pull it off. However, a word of caution.

Leaving aside the opinions about age/edginess I do think this type of look only works if you have a certain demeanour and (dare I say it) shape. I;ve ordered and sent back enough Toast clothes to know my body type (defined waist, biggish boobs, chunky arms and thighs, ruddy/fair complexion) suits much neater outfits. So I tend to buy more tailored/straighter cut clothes and they end up looking the way I like to look because I'm slightly off beam and couldn't look truly 'smart' in them if I tried. But this dress isn't necessarily going to give you the vibe you want by virtue of its very existence. To thine own self be true!

There is no such thing as, "A look more typical of a 75 year old" these days.

Of course there is.

Yep. Give us a laugh.

My 70 something yr old mil and dm are miles apart stylewise.

The problem with the dress is the micro gingham photographs as grey. And mid grey is a VERY hard colour to wear, it drains almost everyone.

CoastalMum101 · 02/09/2021 12:44

There are obviously loads of different demographics of women in their 70’s but almost without exception, every woman that has been on holiday where I live in South Devon this summer has been wearing some variation of this. It’s not a bad outfit at all, but it’s very much favoured by certain groups. Just as dressing up “ironically” in the frumpiest dresses available is favoured by Instagram mum’s and their followers.

I don’t like tje dress or the shoes

Dandy0911 · 02/09/2021 13:47

The dress looks like a baggy shapeless school pinafore.

Shoes are alright. Ish. Would look better with skinny jeans and a jumper or shirt.

EmeraldDiamondBeryl · 02/09/2021 13:49

It looks like something a house mistress in a 1920s boarding school would wear. It's definitely a look Confused
