What do you think of this dress?

I was thinking of styling with these shoes :

Too old lady?

No. The dress is really bad.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/09/2021 10:10

It’s one of where I’d have to actually see it on the person. It has the potential to look either drab or fab no in-between really.

Chocaholic9 · 01/09/2021 10:18

Don't like either but if you like them it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks

Divebar2021 · 01/09/2021 10:21

I don’t have a problem with people mentioning age but I’m not wild about the association of older = shit.

I’m surprised so many people hate the dress… it’s not an unusual style to see around at the moment. If it was a plain fabric it could easily be sold in Cos or Kin which are pretty mainstream. It probably wouldn’t work for me but my “cool” friend would look great in it.

@WhoEatsPopTarts

I live in the North and that dress is exactly what the edgy people around here are wearing. The shoes are beautiful.
There is a world of difference between ‘the edgy people around here in Hebden Bridge/Chorlton’ and ‘the identikit outfit worn by many around here’ that the OP mentions, though, isn’t there?
ActonSquirrel · 01/09/2021 10:52

@LimeRedBanana

FML.

My heart sank on opening the link to that dress. There are enough disappointments in life, without opening a link on Mumsnet S&B - to see that. 😥

So then I see - a link to some shoes. Oh, thank goodness. The OP’s going to style the fuck out of that dress, and whip out some amazing shoes, that transform the tent into something banging. 🙏

No. Staid, pedestrian shoes. 😥😓

Jeez. Even Fraulein Maria has a nipped in waist. 😧

That made me Grin

I would like to reassure posters that you cannot catch old age from clothes.

Toast dresses aren't really my thing (although I love some of their other stuff). But I disagree with the premise that, if you have to ask, you shouldn't do it. I think any departure from your usual style can feel weird and that we let that put us off far too easily.

What I'd say by way of caution is that I think this style of dress requires the best fabric you can afford so that it keeps its shape and doesn't go droopy at the first wash. As far as I'm concerned, Margaret Howell is the maestro at this but that costs squillions and Toast is normally pretty decent.

It also needs to fit well - there's a line between oversized and too big and I haven't fathomed out where it lies but it's definitely there.

I'd ask on the Toast thread too - someone might have bought it and, while they're fans, they don't hold back if they don't like it.

I'm a big fan of the Anne of Green Gables aesthetic!

ACPC · 01/09/2021 11:21

Love the shoes. Dress speaks 'extra from American Horror Story: Asylum', sorry op.

lazylinguist · 01/09/2021 11:40

There's a big difference between recognising that some styles of clothes are more commonly worn by older people and saying older people look shit! My teenage daughter wouldn't be seen dead in what her grandmother wears and vice versa. That doesn't mean either of them looks shit.

Very different age groups usually don't wear the same clothes or necessarily look good in the same clothes. And while many people might want to look a bit younger (and teens might want to look a bit older), I don't think many aspire to look like they're in a whole other generation. Surely it's perfectly reasonable for a 30 yo not to want to emulate a look more typical of a 75 yo?

When I look at the 1980s version (best version) of AOGG I do think the ‘plain and serviceable’ dresses that Marilla made her were better than the puffed sleeve number lovely old Matthew got her Grin
Spottyegg · 01/09/2021 13:28

OP, if you look on the Toast thread someone has tried this dress on but noted it had a strange fit - worth trying on.

Absolutely agree. I’m on my 50s, I have no desire to wear what my DD (22) wears and vice versa. I might wear one or two pieces, but the aesthetic is very different amongst my friends of a similar age.
Teawaster · 01/09/2021 13:40

I think it could look very grumpy on some people but could look fab and cool on others if well accessorised .I like the shoes but think DM's would be better
I agree with not wanting to dress the same as a younger or older generation. I am late 50's and still buy some stuff from 'younger ' shops , but I hope I know my limits and what's best not exposed too much , like my knees!

Floisme · 01/09/2021 13:41

I've nothing further to say about the dress and I don't want to derail the thread but I'll just add this: Of course women often review their style as they get older - I certainly have, for reasons that include body changes, life changes and sheer boredom. I recommend it too. But I also find the idea that different generations should stay in their 'style lanes' so depressing that I really hope I've misunderstood. I'm in my 60s and I've taken inspiration everywhere from my 20+ niece to my now deceased mum and aunts.

And yes teenagers often have a visceral dislike of anything that reminds them of their parents; it would be nice however, to think that most of us grew out of this in adulthood. I think any suggestion that 'old lady' is used a neutral term on S&B is a bit disingenuous.

I'm also in the north. Plenty of people wearing similar outfits but not a single one of them 'edgy'. They all look bland and instantly forgettable.
JollyHostess · 01/09/2021 14:34

I like both but would drown in anything from Toast and would be looking for a cheaper version in petite 😊

Seniorandjunior · 01/09/2021 14:53

It's a no from me. Reminds me of a tea towel that has been thrown in a colours-that-ran wash too many times. Or a dress for a poor little orphan in a fairytale, that would be described as 'thin and worn and providing no heat'. What's that one that makes me cry - The Little Matchmaker girl! That's the one. The Little Matchmaker.

Fun thread though!

Ruthietuthie · 01/09/2021 15:29

In the words of Tim Gunn, "If that's the look you are going for, you've certainly got it!!!"

5128gap · 01/09/2021 15:46

They're both ok, safe choices. Certainly nothing to throw hands up in horror at, but not stand out either. Far better than some of the horrors that have been around the last year.

Tooembarrassingtomention · 01/09/2021 18:11

Is workhouse chic in fashion?

ActonSquirrel · 01/09/2021 18:47

It is stalking me now. Since clicking on the link I keep seeing ads everywhere showing me the dress.

It isn't my style but to each their own.

But this is just silly. There is no such thing as, "A look more typical of a 75 year old" these days. The last person I saw of around that age was my mum, and she was wearing jeans and Converse-type shoes.

Ok. Well unless it's just your mum, then I guess you must live in an area populated by super-trendy 75 year-olds then. I certainly don't. I'm not saying that there is no overlap. Jeans and Converse are a relatively age-neutral look, I guess. But there are looks you would not see on a 75 year-old and ones you would pretty much only see on people of that age bracket.
