Berets on older women

ACandleOnAGinBottle · 28/08/2021 12:44

Hello, I have just turned 52. I was in London yesterday and saw a lady that looked older than me wearing a black beret with a black outfit and a stone-coloured trench coat. She looked unbelievable.

Am I being silly to think I can pull it off?

I think it’s 90% belief and 10% head shape

Edmontine · 28/08/2021 12:47

Seriously, seriously what on earth does age have to do with the wearing of a hat? Either it suits the wearer, or not.

This is getting ridiculous now.

ACandleOnAGinBottle · 28/08/2021 12:55

I don't know @Edmontine if it does or it doesn't. I lost my mojo a long time ago and I don't know what suits me anymore.

Hello - I'm 51 and have a wardrobe of berets, love them! They make a boring winter coat feel chic and stylish, and they are relatively easy to pull off even if you're not generally comfortable as a 'hat' person. They suit a slightly rakish angle best. Try it, it's fun!

PearlyBird · 28/08/2021 13:02

It really depends. I would look stupid in a berry. But other people really carry them off.
Can you post a picture with your face scribbled out?

ACandleOnAGinBottle · 28/08/2021 13:03

@PearlyBird no, no way I have the confidence to do that Sad

I’m in my 30s and I love a beret. Much nicer than a bobble hat in the winter.

I do think this is true. Hats are not age related at all. As a short person, even at 18, hats were difficult for me.

I think I've had a few knitted 'cloche' style hats just for warmth, in winter, and they looked ok.

Bellagonna · 28/08/2021 13:05

I just thibk it the resistance woman from allo Allo

Classica · 28/08/2021 13:05

Not being silly at all. Cheap enough to try one at home and see if you like your reflection. I'd worry that pairing it with a trench coat might be a bit 'Allo 'Allo though.

Wearing any type of headwear requires a head, a hat and the confidence to wear it. If you're not used to wearing hats it can feel a bit odd, but don't overthink it, just go for it.

The stunning lady in question was wearing a black beret with an embroidered little white kangaroo I think it was at the front. Anyone know what brand this might be as I think I will be sad enough to try and buy the same one in the hope that it miraculously transforms me into a stylish person?

Kangol
SmidgenofaPigeon · 28/08/2021 13:07

Do you have a hat face? It doesn’t really matter at all, but some people do more than others.

I rock berets and beanies. Get a more floppy style so it can sit on your head just so, not the more rigid kind. I have a lovely forest green velvet one from Etsy.

StillSmallVoice · 28/08/2021 13:07

I think you will find the brand is Kangol.

Carboncheque · 28/08/2021 13:09

Ah Kangol. The 90s revival brings back so many memories.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 28/08/2021 13:09

Kangol?

TheFallenMadonna · 28/08/2021 13:09

I'm 50 and wear berets (on my white hair!). Not Kangol though. Pricey!

RelentlessForwardProgress · 28/08/2021 13:09

x post with everyone else Grin

seasidehouse · 28/08/2021 13:09

We saw some lovely ones when we were on a day trip to Boulogne they were reasonably priced and looked great quality , wish I had had the guts to buy a couple
Hope you are braver than me and give them a try

are you the fallen madonna with the big boobies?
Tempusfudgeit · 28/08/2021 13:10

If Eddie Izzard can pull it off, why not?

Pellewsmate · 28/08/2021 13:13

Eddie Izzard has ruined the beret for me, as if a woman would ever colour co-ordinate her beret to her lipstick.

ACandleOnAGinBottle · 28/08/2021 13:16

I have googled Eddie Izzard + beret and I really don't want to be unkind, but that's not a look I like in any way, shape or form, it reminds me of Pat Butcher.
