Berets on older women

Hello, I have just turned 52. I was in London yesterday and saw a lady that looked older than me wearing a black beret with a black outfit and a stone-coloured trench coat. She looked unbelievable.

Am I being silly to think I can pull it off?

I guess this is closer to that lady's style and more what I have in mind, although Dine Keaton does seem to wear her berets really low on the forehead, almost touching her glasses.

Eddie Izzard is a tool, I’m sure that’s not what OP is going for.

DK looks good in hers although that’s not how I’d wear one.

The stunning lady in question was wearing a black beret with an embroidered little white kangaroo I think it was at the front. Anyone know what brand this might be as I think I will be sad enough to try and buy the same one in the hope that it miraculously transforms me into a stylish person?
Kangol probably. I’m older than you and I’m a hat wearer. Panama in the summer, faux fur pillbox or bucket hat in the winter. I think the same thing applies as to a new wearer of red lipstick - go straight out of the door after you’ve put it on and forget about it.

Thanks everyone you're right, it's Kangol. It looked so fabulous...

The key to be able to pull off wearing a hat is the confidence to forget you’re wearing one.

It should pull a look together rather than be a main feature.

I love a beret, timeless and ageless look.

Funnily enough I was browsing berets in Uniqlo's latest Ines de la Fresange line.
I don't suit a beanie/bobble hat but do like a knitted beret.

thedevilinablackdress · 28/08/2021 14:24

Berets are only one ring up from beanies in the hat/scary stakes
Tug it down a bit at the back rather than pulling forward and it looks almost like a beanie.

After 14 years of compulsory beret wearing, enough was enough. one has not been near my head for decades.

Funnylittlefloozie · 28/08/2021 14:44

As long as you don't style the beret and trench coat with ankle socks and brogues, channelling Michelle of La Resistance, you will look great Smile

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/08/2021 14:49

i cannot wear berets ...I look like that Victoria Wood character. I'm lookin'fur mah friend....Kimmmmmberley. 'Ave yer seen 'er??

I can wear beanies with my hair long and poking out, but not with short hair.

And otherwise I can wear all types of hats.

I saw an elderly lady in a Kangol beret a few weeks ago, she looked so stylish I had to compliment her.

larkstar · 28/08/2021 15:48

I love berets - they look great to me - can;t say I've ever thought one didn't look good. Getting the right size is the hardest part - you really need to try them on - I have the classic Kangol Monty - they are surprisingly warm and expensive. My wife doesn't like it but I don't care.

Kintsugi16 · 28/08/2021 15:55

I’m older and wear berets, but then I’m known for my hats and am rarely without one.

Kintsugi16 · 28/08/2021 15:57

…… I find the softer type work better on me

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 28/08/2021 15:57

She's tougher than me. I tried that ensemble and ended up on the receiving end of 'Allo 'Allo jokes every single time.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/08/2021 16:02

If anything you might be too young to pull off a beret! Lots of older ladies wear them around my parents' area (I noticed it is a good look for them) but they would be in their 70s.

Younger people tend to wear them in a "look at me - I'm wearing a beret!" way, whereas these ladies just looked smartly dressed.
