I'm going to an awards ceremony in a couple of months - it's going to be on the telly Blush I am the least glamorous person I know. I hate being "dressed up" by most people's standards. I don't like wearing dresses really, and am v tall and can't do heels or I'll look ridiculous and fall over. I also haven't got very much money - probably absolute max £100 including shoes. Help!

Ideally I'd like something like a nice jumpsuit or wide-legged trousers + nice top, more hippy than tailored if that makes sense. Prefer block colours to patterns, and would definitely swerve anything pastelly or "girly". Shoes probably need to be ballet pumps, but in a size 9??! Also would prefer to buy either second hand or from an ethical brand. I would really, really appreciate any input you can offer Smile

Ethical, but you'll only have £10 for shoes.

Dogoodfeelgood · 25/08/2021 10:56

This would be an evening appropriate jumpsuit with plenty left over for shoes. I don’t think you need flats though! Just go for a low heel, don’t worry about being tall, own it and be fabulous! www.johnlewis.com/hailey-logan-by-adrianna-papell-floral-sequin-jumpsuit-black/p5548478

Dogoodfeelgood · 25/08/2021 11:00

This is also stunning and very glam www.johnlewis.com/adrianna-papell-mikado-crepe-jumpsuit-black/p4907110

Pair this or one above with these lovely low shoes - available in size 9 now www.johnlewis.com/mango-mid-heel-court-shoes-black/p5612064

Salanda · 25/08/2021 11:01

Would you consider renting a dress? Places like Hurr and On Rotation offer rentals, which means you can get a really nice outfit for less than buying one.

Dogoodfeelgood · 25/08/2021 11:01

I find mango shoes to be really comfy. Practice walking in them. You won’t fall over or look ridiculous xx

Go full Tilda Swinton in a tux!

If you are ok with second hand I would search 'Long tall sally" on Vinted and then filter for jumpsuits. I have just had a quick look and there are some nice one's worn once for not much money. Sorry I couldn't work out how to do a link to my search but this is an example.

Frogsonglue · 25/08/2021 14:31

Thank you so much everyone! Some lovely ideas here. I hadn't thought of renting, that's something else to look into.
The issue with heels is that I genuinely don't know how to walk in them! I don't think I'd feel relaxed if I was scared of stumbling.
Genuinely, thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I'm going to enjoy having a proper look through all of these again when I've got a bit more time later.

Don’t feel you have to wear heels to dress up! Lots of lovely smart flats - brogues, loafers etc are pretty popular at the mo! You want to be able to enjoy yourself so don’t wear something you’re not comfortable with.

Dogoodfeelgood · 25/08/2021 15:18

Very true that you don’t need heels and actually it’s quite trendy to not wear them! I think very high heels look incredibly silly but a low chunky heel is usually nice and fine to walk in. But absolutely comfort should be your main aim! X

Palavah · 25/08/2021 15:25

Assuming you are neither celeb nor likely to present or receive and award then most focus will be waist up. You absolutely do not need heels to be glam!

If you don't find a jumpsuit that works then focus your efforts on the top and go for a pair of smart wide-legged trousers that you can wear again.

Frogsonglue · 25/08/2021 16:30

Good point Palavah, although there's a very small chance I might have to get up to accept an award...all the more reason not to be tottering about in unfamiliar shoes Grin

I second the renting suggestion. If you are tall, a statement dress will look fabulous and you’ll be able to carry off most things.

tolerable · 25/08/2021 22:11

tall,which size?sorry?x

tolerable · 26/08/2021 15:35

maybe this(i liked all colours) www.wearekin.co/store/the-pleated

Frogsonglue · 26/08/2021 19:52

Ooh tolerable that's a nice look...she's exactly the same size as me too allegedly! Although I'm definitely more "statuesque" than I used to be Grin
Not sure I could do the one solid colour look but might be able to put together the same silhouette with a tunic top and wide trousers. Thank you!

Also, I looked at all the Thought jumpsuits and loved a lot of them, would definitely wear again - but not sure if they're dressy enough? I've never been to a black tie event in my life so really don't know how dressed up I need to be

Pinkcadillac · 26/08/2021 21:08

This would work very well with flats www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.sleeveless-wrap-dress-turquoise.1015483001.html

Frogsonglue · 26/08/2021 21:13

That's beautiful! It might look a bit frumpy on me though, my figure is nothing like the model's sadly. I'm a size 14/16.

OP posts:
Pinkcadillac · 26/08/2021 21:20

more forgiving!

MissFritton65 · 26/08/2021 22:19

If it's a "black tie" event, there is an assumed dress code - evening dress; some of the suggestions are day dresses which aren't appropriate. You need to be looking for a "dressy" jumpsuit or cocktail dress at the very least. I'm sorry I don't know how to do links but look at John Lewis and filter "cocktail".

bonfireheart · 27/08/2021 09:25

Jumpsuit
www.next.co.uk/style/ls200674/P34939#P34939

Nice earrings, small purse, any black shows, get your hair professionally blowdried before the event.

Frogsonglue · 27/08/2021 14:26

Argh I don't even know if it's black tie, I just know it's posh. I'm way out of my comfort zone. I know most people see getting glammed up as a treat, but I honestly hate it, it makes me feel like an imposter. Thanks for all your advice.
