I'm going to an awards ceremony in a couple of months - it's going to be on the telly Blush I am the least glamorous person I know. I hate being "dressed up" by most people's standards. I don't like wearing dresses really, and am v tall and can't do heels or I'll look ridiculous and fall over. I also haven't got very much money - probably absolute max £100 including shoes. Help!

Ideally I'd like something like a nice jumpsuit or wide-legged trousers + nice top, more hippy than tailored if that makes sense. Prefer block colours to patterns, and would definitely swerve anything pastelly or "girly". Shoes probably need to be ballet pumps, but in a size 9??! Also would prefer to buy either second hand or from an ethical brand. I would really, really appreciate any input you can offer Smile

Check the dress code out (photos from previous events for example)

Then choose a dress or jumpsuit. Be careful not to choose a flowery summer bbq outfit, lovely as they are, as that’s very different from black tie

Black is a safe colour for events like this

Thanks Marlene that's good advice, I should have thought of that!

Ok I feel better now, it's smart but clearly not black tie. Nice jumpsuit and flats it is :)

Do you need to include shoes in your budget? Do you have any nice shoes you can wear? Just remember no one else will know whether your shoes are new or not!

I have a pair of boots I could possibly get away with, but am also going to see if I can borrow some shoes (although maybe it would be a good idea to own at least one pair of smart shoes...)

If you have some suitable shoes already, that’s a safer bet. New shoes can need a bit of breaking in.

My favourite thing to do is to arrange a hair cut on the day so I’ve had a pro blow dry.

Rent at Hurr Collective?

A nice smart black jumpsuit. Patent leather flatties, (smart and comfy) and some silver dress up ear rings and necklace and you're good to go.
Net a Porter always have nice jumpsuits on sale.

Have you looked at Ooh Betty dresses? They are made in the UK, super comfy and you can order them in tall length. I like this one: Nice Dress and it would look lovely with some ballet pumps Smile

They also have plain fabrics if you prefer those! Smile

Or else Dorothy Perkins have some tall Palazzo trousers that you could wear with a nice top like this one 😀
