Does anyone really throw out of date makeup out?

It started when I noticed some of my foundations were around 5 years old , now I've noticed that I have eyeshadows that are possibly 8 years old 🙈

I change mascara every 4 months though if that redeems me?

Should I be chucking all the 'old' stuff out?

I don’t unless it dries out or goes off. I’ve got things that are years old. It’s never done me any harm.

Runrigdan · 20/08/2021 18:54

I'm quite careful with my mascara and eye liner. But everything else I keep til it runs out, or starts to look funny.

Cheesewiz · 20/08/2021 18:54

You can recycle old makeup at tescos and body shop. Please don't send it to landfill

BungleandGeorge · 20/08/2021 19:03

Powders like eye shadow/ blusher etc I keep for ages, there’s not going to be a lot of bacteria growth there! Creams and liquids need to be a bit more careful so would Chuck if it’s years old. Mascara i throw away every few months but I’ve usually used it up before then anyway

Never have done. Kept it for years with no ill effects.

Till now. Have an eye infection I'm struggling to get rid of

woodhill · 20/08/2021 19:47

You could recycle the items at some Boots and receive points on card.

hemhem · 20/08/2021 20:23

I've always wondered about this. I have been using the same foundation stick for about 6 years now. I use it around twice a week, its not like its been sat in the cupboard, it just lasts a long time. Its Bobbi Brown and still works perfectly, doesn't smell or look bad. Seems mad to chuck it out, that's just money in the bin?

Figroll16 · 21/08/2021 07:26

So glad it's not just me!

I did a major cull when I moved flat. A mixture of old/what was I thinking of? Still got way too much though!

DGFB · 21/08/2021 07:46

I change mascara but the rest I can keep for years. No issues

So go on, tell us what you do with your own make-up 🤔
CiaoForNiao · 22/08/2021 00:53

Some of my favourite eyeshadows were inherited from my Grandma. She died 12 years ago! They've never caused any eye issues though.

GreyhoundG1rl · 22/08/2021 00:53

Yes.

NotMyCat · 22/08/2021 00:58

Only mascara, or anything that looks visibly wrong or smells funny
I used a 3 year old foundation yesterday and it was fine. Think it depends as well, if you're sticking your finger in the bottle or on eyeshadow etc etc. I use a palette and disinfect and wash stuff often

JMAngel1 · 22/08/2021 07:59

I still have my wedding day lipstick groom 2007 - I allow myself to wear it maybe twice a year as it’s discontinued and is the nicest sheerest Red I have ever seen - Ruby Glass by Clinique. Wish they would bring it back.
I also still have a Stila highlighter in a tube from 1998😱. It reminds me of a wonderful girls holiday I had in America - when I look at it it takes me back to all of the excitement of that trip. Plus it still adds a gorgeous gleam to my cheekbones.

Rangoon · 22/08/2021 08:07

Yes I have thrown out stuff. I shuddered when I realised that I had lipstick I bought in Paris on a trip before we had children. My eldest is 23 years old.

Erictheavocado · 22/08/2021 08:32

I replace mascara every six weeks, eyeshadows every four months and foundation every six months. I use tinted lip balm and replace those monthly.
I also wash applicators frequently.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 22/08/2021 12:00

I use everything until it is finished or it smells off - so far no issues.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 22/08/2021 12:55

Making sure you clean your brushes is important I don’t use those applicators you get with eye shadow though or sponges. One Beauty blender I quite enjoy cleaning them all. There are things which last a while and those that get smelly & horrible mascara I don’t keep any length of time and foundations. I have the Bobbi brown stick abs the benefit one but don’t use it directly onto skin my previous benefit stick I kept as it was amazing so I’m glad they brought them back as I really liked them on my skin.

AnnieSnap · 22/08/2021 13:40

I have some 13-year-old Agent Provocateur perfume that smells wrong. I used it before realising this and it was fine on my skin, but sadly I need to let it go.

Bbub · 22/08/2021 15:26

@LaurieFairyCake

I'm currently using a 24 year old eyeshadow

Still got eyes 🤷‍♀️

Same here, I've recently rediscovered a single body shop eyeshadow I bought at least 24 years ago when I was a teen. It's the best everyday colour for me and I'm so pleased to be getting my money's worth out of it, especially considering all the other stuff I've wasted money on over the years.

I only chuck stuff if I don't like it. I don't care if it's old. Actually, mascara I would be cautious with probably but nothing else.

Also got some lovely givenchy palettes(sp?) from about 2005, was wearing the lip colour last night and it's still going strong.

Time40 · 22/08/2021 15:39

but old mascara or eyeliner full of bacteria might be

Yoda, I had no idea you were keen on make-up!

Isababybel · 22/08/2021 15:44

Powder items like eyeshadow and blusher definitely not. Things like liquid lipsticks , mascara i would throw after 2 years max. I had to bin a load of makeup recently that i hadn't worn since march last year lockdown as i also had a baby and literally only just started wearing makeup again just now.
I had to chuck a primer away that looked and smelled fine but wasn't working anymore, it used to fill in my pores lovely but if anything it started emphasising them more!!

RubyGoat · 22/08/2021 15:57

I don't really wear makeup much these days, I do still have some though. I wouldn't use mascara over 6-8 months old, I got a really nasty sty in my eye once after using old mascara, it swelled up to truly impressive proportions sporner corner would have wanted photos when it burst Envy I've never had a problem with anything else though. I've still got some of the old Body Shop Colourings brushes with the wooden handles, I bought a load for a quid each when they were changing over to the crappy plastic ones. Some are still unopened, DD can have them when she's older if she wants.
