Boden’s latest catalogue

The new Boden mini catalogue previewing some the autumn range hit my doormat this morning. I can’t decide if they are fighting for survival or trying to shake off unprofitable plebs like me who only buys the odd thing, but the pricing is bonkers. £95 for a merino jumper? £110 for the Eva midi dress (jersey). #nothankyou Johnny.

The pricing is insane, isn't it? I like most of their stuff (perhaps not the overly patterned things) but refuse to pay the non-sale prices.

Housewife2010 · 13/08/2021 17:12

I've been a Boden customer for over 20 years. I wish they had more realistic prices rather than inflating them and then having codes for money off. I wonder if anyone ever pays the listed price? I also really disagree with their practice of offering certain professions 25% off. It isn't fair on those of us who also work incredibly hard but don't get the discount .

MissyB1 · 13/08/2021 17:18

Yep I got it today too. Boden need to realise there are other companies doing similar clothes of similar quality for lower prices. There’s a few nice bits in there but simply not worth the money!

whatswithtodaytoday · 13/08/2021 17:22

They're compensating for the fact that no-one buys anything full price ever. But even with a decent discount, the process are still very high note - they used to be pricey but worth it, not so much now.

piglet81 · 13/08/2021 17:25

I think they jumped the shark quite a while ago with their ‘fun’ patterns on clothing for adults. I do like some of their kids’ stuff but I’d never pay full price for it (even Indulgent Grandma doesn’t...).

Mistlewoeandwhine · 13/08/2021 17:39

They donate money to the Tories, I found out recently, so I will not be buying anything off them ever again.

Crikey - just did a quick search and came across this (long) list. Not that I'm condoning it, but Boden/Julian have donated a drop in the ocean compared to many. Where do you even start?

Blood hell I didn’t know that! Angry Right that’s it now, no more Boden in this house.
DacwMamYnDwad · 13/08/2021 18:39

I think it is good quality and the garments last well.

cornflower123 · 13/08/2021 18:48

Mediocre quality, inflated prices. I'm glad they have stopped sending me catalogues now (outside target age range), although 10 years ago I probably bought quite a bit from them 😅.

Housewife2010 · 13/08/2021 19:38

I've found the children's clothes to be good quality. Most of my children's clothing was Boden when they were younger. The quality was excellent and I've managed to sell it for a good price on eBay. I've had lots of clothes for myself but I've had to return a lot of their knitwear due to pilling. Their customer service has been excellent though.

DacwMamYnDwad · 13/08/2021 20:13

I haven't had anything from them that was of mediocre quality. Everything has been well made and made with good quality fabric.
When I've decided to sell it, it usually has a decent resale value.

I also like M&S and many other British brands that make quality clothes that last.

Beachlovingirl · 13/08/2021 20:41

I buy a lot of basics from boden for my 4 year old.
The knickers are amazing.
The t shirts and leggings wash well and don’t mean I have to buy 5-6 to allow for ridiculous shrinking after first wash.
The clothes can be washed again and again and still look great.
The socks though - no. Joules bamboo win over boden every time.
Cardigans again worth the money.
I usually purchase with a promo code though.

Liltzero · 13/08/2021 20:50

Also finding Biden prices yikes inducing!

I'd be interested in recommendations for similar but cheaper brands?!

BeeandG · 13/08/2021 21:08

Agree not sure about buying anything at the prices in the current catalogue. I'm starting a new job and wouldn't mind a couple of day dresses but might just look on thrift+ or ebay for a preloved one instead!

DGFB · 14/08/2021 14:35

Agree their prices are silly, but I like the quality and so will no doubt buy a few dresses. Though I have to say my Monsoon dresses are much cheaper and the same quality

HopeClearwater · 14/08/2021 15:14

Which professions get 25% off?

peaceanddove · 14/08/2021 15:27

I bought a sweatshirt from Boden in the Spring. Nice colours and pattern, but genuinely it felt no better quality than my DD's sweatshirts from H&M which are a quarter of the price.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/08/2021 15:31

Yes they have gone crazy with prices. Feel like they are trying to go out of the price range of the ‘ordinary’. I do love their customer service though, it’s always fantastic.

MaMelon · 14/08/2021 15:33

I wondered that too

If you’re in the NHS, sign up for health service discounts. Currently 25% off full price order over £30.

Eta: well it says keyworker.

TheScottishPlay · 14/08/2021 16:01

I like their Richmond trousers but wouldn't pay £70 for them. M&S Mias are similar quality at half or less the price.

peaceanddove · 14/08/2021 17:00

And just remembered that the fluff from the inside of the sweatshirt shed all over the place too. Not what you expect at £60 a pop!

cherrypiepie · 14/08/2021 18:23

Never bought boden as put off by the prices and have been covertously looking at the catalogues for 10 years!

What brands would say are similar?
