TK Maxx 'bargains'

Does anyone have a really good experience of buying stuff from TK Maxx? What am I doing wrong as I seem to always end up with substandard stuff? Most recently, I just bought a silver chain (£49.99) online to give to someone as a present. It arrived this morning. Just unpacked it, unclasped it to take the labels off. Went to do it up again and the whole clasp structure came apart on the table! WTF!

I buy their food items. I’ve tried teas and olive oils. And once a coconut avocado oil that was quite nice. Some delicious chocolate too.

The clothing is usually rubbish but the home and baby sections are usually pretty great. You can always get Aden & Anais baby stuff for a fraction of the price.

Onlinedilema · 06/08/2021 20:58

I've had Birkenstocks and flip flops. I also love their fancy scented soaps.
Bought clothes for the dcs in the past too and the quality was good.

Greenlittle · 06/08/2021 21:00

Ah yes, I like the small fancy soaps in tin boxes.

Justnipping · 06/08/2021 21:28

I've only ever bought one thing from tk maxx and it was online from a link on here - these blundstone boots (or as close as, maybe a bit higher) www.blundstone.co.uk/products/blundstone-1931-rustic-black-leather. I paid £29.99 for them and was delighted

Fferny1 · 06/08/2021 21:44

I've stopped buying clothes at Tk Maxx. I still love the big bottles of Scented Soap Marseille, the perfumes and the candles.I think this year the clothes have been pretty rubbish as I used to buy a lot online. I think I have cashmere scarves in every colour & weight from Tk's and they're all still perfect. The winter coats are pretty good value every year too.

JaceLancs · 06/08/2021 21:51

I hate their website but have had some great bargains in store
Paul smith shoes and cashmere sweaters
Prada shoes last week and a lulu Guinness bag
All Saints stuff and jaeger
Lk bennett shoes
Recently a missoni scarf and ted baker jumper
Massimo dutti and bargain Zara to be had
It’s mainly luck - I frequent 12-15 different branches on a regular basis - sometimes buy things to sell on
I love the chance of finding a real steal

NotMeNoNo · 06/08/2021 23:32

I love TK maxx but I’m choosy with clothes as there’s so much own brands now.
Best bargain was my Missoni blanket.
I did get a Scottish cashmere jumper cheap that had a hole in, I darned that up and wore it for ages. Better than it going for rags.
You basically have to be a careful shopper but there are bargains.

Niconacotaco · 06/08/2021 23:39

Years ago I was browsing make up bags in TKMaxx and happened to pick up one from Lloyds Pharmacy, with the original label attached. Priced at £7.99.
TKMaxx label was £7.99 with RRP £9.99. I've ignored the RRP ever since.

Lucked · 07/08/2021 11:35

I buy a lot on-line. There are definitely lines which are produced by brands solely for TkMaxx like the Osprey London line but shopping on line means I can do a bit of detective work. If there is no RRP next to the price it is a TKMAXX brand. The RRPs that are provided need to be taken with a massive punch of salt.

NotMyCat · 07/08/2021 11:41

I buy a lot but only really beauty/skin/hair stuff
Recently I got grown alchemist conditioner for £7.99, still on the website at £30 a bottle

Edmontine · 07/08/2021 11:46

I buy everything online - except from TK Maxx. That’s definitely a shop only enterprise. The stock is too random to ever be certain of the quality of any item.

legosunqueen · 07/08/2021 12:27

Have got some great bargains from TK Maxx, a big ski jacket for £60, a large Kate Spade handbag for £99, lots of kids clothes (teen Levi jeans £20 , Ralph Lauren puffer coat for £40) plus a leather biker jacket for £70. It's a gamble though, often don't find anything good to buy there...

closeyourpies · 07/08/2021 12:36

I adore this shop.

Wouldn't say I'm overly invested in their woman's clothes, but love their kids section for toys and clothes. Love their home section, loads of brilliant finds - Great quality, high end etc. Yesterday bought some Ralph Lauren table runners for £4

There's a lot of rubbish to rummage through though, but that's the fun of it too. MIL doesn't like it because she thinks it's like a jumble sale

Pumpkintopf · 07/08/2021 12:46

Have got some brilliant dog beds there, Christmas decorations, home stuff, love their Christmas soap, throws- they've been good for long dresses for events before too but can't always be bothered to trawl through the clothes.

LittleLottieChaos · 07/08/2021 13:09

I find TK Maxx can have bargains, I got a neat Lacoste geometric knitted jumper in a sale recently. However that was a visit in store... I don’t tend to use their online shop as the search facility is a bit crap.

If you’re after silver chains try a company called Curteis (it’s a great supplier many jewellers use to source their chains). You can specify style, length etc.

ZZbuzzes · 07/08/2021 13:16

My recent best buys from there are 2 MeMe London necklaces for £23 each. (RRP £150 which they are no way worth ).
I get all my soaps, reed diffusers and candles, all my socks and a few bags. I rarely find any clothes I like though.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/08/2021 13:17

@Edmontine

Absolutely.

I love going in for a browse around their homeware and baby stuff- Aden & Anais, Joseph Joseph and Le Creuset stuff at a fraction of the price, and it’s great for Christmas decorations as well. I like the eclectic stuff- they had a range of authentic woven African baskets a year or two ago which were beautiful.

I never bother with the clothes though- who has the time to browse through the random collection of styles and sizes?

Edmontine · 07/08/2021 13:42

The homeware is a joy. I’m still using the astonishingly good KitchenAid saucepans bought there (over the course of about three weeks, as they put more stuff on the shelves) after a house move more than a decade ago. They’re still pretty much perfect. Same with odd bits of Le Creuset.

And lately, searching at home for cookery books for a university-bound teen, I was amazed to see how many of my reasonably impressive hoard were acquired at the same time. All because the new house had a TK Maxx within a 20 minute walk ...

my0123 · 08/08/2021 00:07

I think it massively depends which store you are near too.
'Posher' areas tend to have TKMAXs with much nicer stuff in my experience.

Baycitystroller · 08/08/2021 00:16

I got a load of Orla Keily bedding for a bargain price. Never buy clothes there.

borntobequiet · 08/08/2021 08:46

Didrikson warm winter parka £39.99 in their clearance. Soaked in Luxury (Danish brand) summer totally waterproof and stylish parka £24.99.
Faith in Nature toiletries about 2/3 normal price (occasionally). Nice rucksacks.

The must have for every woman!

goose1964 · 08/08/2021 14:12

Galassia those shoes would be ideal for a grinch costume.

AwkwardSquad · 08/08/2021 14:39

I’ve had some really decent stuff from TK Maxx over the years, and some duff items. I think you need to know what you are looking at, and do some research, eg on brands and rrp. You also need to watch out for the jumble sale effect - an item might look better than it is in comparison to the dross it’s surrounded by. But even then, you can still be caught out - I know I have been!
