Are sandals gone out of fashion?

I always wear sandals in summer, usually gabor or rieker with a bit of a heel. I paint toenails a bright colour. I wear for work and also if I am in town on annual leave. I have flatter sandals for if I am on holiidays. I wear them with a capri trousers and a nice cotton top. I wear this for work and at home in the summer.

Recently I have noticed that a lot of other women my age (late 40s) are wearing a chunky white runner with leggings.

I love the feeling of air on my toes. Weather is often dull but clammy so I would hate toes to be enclosed. Also as I am only 5ft 3, I love having a small heel.

If I wore leggings at the weekend for errands then my normal tops don't work well and I would need a sports top and runners. Also, as I look my age and a bit square/untrendy I am afraid I would look too 'try hard'.

What does everyone else wear in summer?

I think the chunky doc marten sandals are quite trendy, lots near me wearing them. They have a platform sole rather than a heel though.

Flat leather sandals that are not frumpy. No heels. And fit flops for every day as well.
I want summer breezes on my toes, trainers get way too hot in summer

WanderingTrolley1 · 03/08/2021 20:35

I am yet to bare my toes. I’m in trainers and dresses. Age 43.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/08/2021 20:36

I wear sandals right up until October.

Mammyloveswine · 03/08/2021 20:38

I'm in my early 30s and I feel like a total frump in trainers...

I wear slip on mules, or toe post sandals, or wedges... always wear a stiletto heel if I'm getting properly dressed up to go out but they are harder to find these days as not in fashion!

thedevilinablackdress · 03/08/2021 20:54

Sandals are definitely not out of fashion, though possibly the ones you describe could not be considered 'trendy'. Trainers, especially white, have been 'in' for quite a while and many enjoy the comfort.
In hot weather, I wear Tevas and very old Saltwater-style sandals if it's hot. But I'm not keen on bare toes in the office or on city streets - but that's just my foible.

Bare toes with a trouser is ok I think. My feet get very hot at work in the enclosed shoe. Also the white runner cannot be worn with capri trousers and a nice top. I would need a separate athleisure outfit for this. Currently what I wear for work smart/casual is what I wear at home. If I kept up with current trends, I would need two sets of clothes.

You sound happy with what you're wearing at the moment, so don't get trainers if they don't fit with the way you dress.

lazylinguist · 03/08/2021 21:53

Sandals are not out of fashion. Some styles if sandals are though. Wearing trainers isn't compulsory!

user1471554720 · 03/08/2021 22:28

I am trying not to look dated. I know that jewelled sandals look a bit dated. I wear a neat sandal with a 2 inch heel (mule type) in a neutral colour. I might wear a natural toe polish sometimes.

My normal style is classic, neither in or out of fashion. However I don't want to veer into wearing things which are just out of fashion.

The message above shows the type of sandals I wear.

They are OK - I'd wear those to work with a dress.

stealingbeauty · 03/08/2021 22:47

I’m no expert but I think heeled sandals are not currently in fashion. The flat clumpy sandals are fashionable at the moment. So are Tevas.

jamaisjedors · 03/08/2021 22:49

I noticed this OP.

Went to a kind of hip but not smart bar on a hot day. Looked around, i was the only woman wearing sandals. Everyone else was in trainers. I felt frumpy.

user1471554720 · 03/08/2021 22:50

I just wanted to know if I could get away with them. I don't want to look dated. I would hope they are the summer equivalent of a low heeled black boot worn under jeans.

Sandals are more practical and comfortable. Love wearing them all Summer.

pinkcattydude · 03/08/2021 22:55

Sandals the Mum boots of the summer?

Yep. This.

I’m 40 and wear tevas or white trainers. I wouldn’t wear ones like you’ve linked to op or anything from Gabor or Reiker (hadn’t actually heard of the second one until I googled). However what does that matter if you like what you wear and you’re happy? I think having nicely painted toes and feet that show you care about them is the most important thing sandal wise!

Martyitsyourkids · 03/08/2021 23:05

I live in docs sandals in summer. I run a lot so when my feet can be free they are! Although runners feet and sandals aren’t great 🙈

FourteenthDoctor · 03/08/2021 23:14

I wear Birkenstock's but I never know whether they are fashionable or not!

Durbeyfield · 03/08/2021 23:17

I’ve moved over to trainers and plimsolls but I am actually quite missing sandals.

justasking111 · 03/08/2021 23:22

I like pretty footwear in the summer like to be cool, don't own trainers but do have deck shoes

Ozanj · 03/08/2021 23:29

I have ugly feet and usually prefer trainers or canvas shoes but love my Teva Hurricanes. Your post bas made me want to file my feet and put on polish Blush

TheRealKateAdie · 03/08/2021 23:33

I don’t think sandals have ever gone out of fashion, but it’s more that white trainers (especially with dresses) has gone from being alone fairly young/quirky fashion to being really, really popular with all ages of women, so you’re seeing it everywhere this year.

Personally I don’t like wearing trainers with dresses (it looks great on other people, I just feel clumpy and stumpy in that style!), so I stick to flat, fairly classic sandals in tan/black/metallics with summer dresses. I only wear trainers with jeans, leggings etc.
I also find trainers way too hot if the weather is above about 18 degrees.
